  1. Ooo, a hardback copy. Mine is very, very floppy and dog eared! Held together with duct tape, being one of the first tree books I bought and then living in the van for years. Along with Bridgemans tree surgery book- very dated now, but classic, if anyone is interested I may sell it. Pm if interested...

    Sycamore

I might get stick for this, but if there are no points for reduction and the tree is genuinely too large for its location a mature sycamore will pollard (read 'topping'). As long as the owners are understand and are happy to accept the cost of regular pruning every few years... *taking cover now!*
  3. A few branches should be fine. I've seen several large walnuts pruned winter/spring time bleed heavily and as far as I know none have died or really suffered for it...
  4. I believe the arb association website has free downloads for such things...
  5. Ok, at the risk of sounding a bit dim (wouldn't be the first time anyway!) how would me getting in on this open new doors for work? Or is it a purely personal quest
  6. Probably one of the slime molds, no idea which though
  7. Would that be Mr or Mrs D Shade?
  8. No naming and shaming of course, what are the most vague or odd work specs you come across? To start with in the last week I have seen: Oak - remove basal growth. (To include buttress, leaving a floating tree?) Oak- work needed - old storm damage (what about it?!)
  9. Fair enough, I guess I asked for that! so how does it work? Does it actually 'pop up' or is the lump on its top rather than having a flat surface the clever bit?
  10. Silly question maybe: what is a pop up piston?
  11. I couldn't find it either, although the reports mentioned in Barrells video are in the public domain as he says it is a CA. If anyone happens to find a direct link to the relevant page on the Dorset website, please post it here
  12. Less than three hours after calling the police and it being referred to the relevant 'dodgy internet/child protection' department I have just had a call back. They have got the guys address and paid him a visit, he is a genuine seller of laptops/mobiles etc and to avoid some fee or other, rather than remove the original listing he changed it (and the pic) instead. Bit of an odd late night visit for him I imagine! Still, well done plod for taking it seriously and acting quickly
  13. Police aware hopefully nothing more than a wrong photo added to the listing...
  14. Mmm, not what you expect to find when searching for a laptop! I feel ebay would just remove it, call to the police is in order methinks. ..
  15. Any ideas anyone? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=201010146999
  16. Looks stunning, makes me want to get away though!
  17. That first blur could be anything! Second pic gets a second vote for merip; on oak?
  18. Poplar is as good a guess as any. Is the dark coloured wood very wet and a bit pungent- typical of poplar if so. I think its the drying of this (bacterial?) wetwood that allows such rapid decay in topped poplars.
  19. I've seen (and done!) far worse. I suppose it depends in this case on the reason for the work? TPO'd? Decayed? High value targets? Work to BS3998? If dangerous enough to need either felling or this, I'd choose this.
  20. I found an example on dandelion last year, very odd...
  21. To save an unnecessarily lengthy post, , havea look at http://www.naturenet.net/trees/hedgerow/
