  1. All good points also, even an old, decaying tree with a much reduced crown, will offer more in the way of pollution interception and increased air quality than a newly planted one will for decades.
  2. There have been quite a few people ask over the last year or so what are good books for identifying trees, fungi etc. This thread is intended to be a place for people to list books good for whatever reason. I'll start with this one I just received in the post. Roger Phillips, Trees in Britain Europe and North America £2.81 inc p&p, very well laid out, in such a way someone who'd never identified a tree could do it!
  3. If he's keen and questions things that's good. If it's in front of customers, not so. Perhaps with some attitude adjustment, experience and time to mature he could be an asset to your company. Tell him there is no right time, have a read of principles of tree hazard assessment and management p.266, think about how businesses work/cash flow, and then get back to you...
  4. No offense, but are you perhaps getting cunfused with another species, Taxodium distichum for example, which can have pneumatophores around it's base? If so, I'd love to see a pic under the bark/one cut open please - I've never had the opportunity. And they may well be of use for turning...

    My accident

Crikey. I'm seriously impressed by your outlook on this situation. You often hear stories of inspirational people overcoming adversity and life changing accidents to continue doing what they love someway, somehow. I can't see you hiding away and feeling sorry for yourself, I can see you being the next inspirational story someone hears about though! Hang in there, everyone's rooting for you Sean...
  6. Bowlers... Oh er missus! Funny looking cat...
  7. Spot some thing funny, stick it here...
  8. Brilliant! I think there is some confusion here, this new book isn't a new edition of the research for amenity trees body language of trees book or the updated vta field guide, it's a completely new publication. Admittedly a lot of it is covered in those books, but this new one brings it all together and more into one 'vta bible'. I've had a quick flick through it (to aid digestion) and am now reading it start to finish, and it's well worth the cost - like many of his books all rolled into one delicious pie with added sugar and spice. Get it, you won't regret it!
  9. A delicious healthy snack bar available in Tesco, or in this case a 9oz bar of cannabis resin... Erm, cough, I 'think'...
  10. The 'right to light', as far as I am aware, would not apply to any tree unless it was a tree large enough to block light at the time of planting; and even then I'm not aware of this ever happening. The right is acquired, I think, after having had uninterrupted light for over twenty or so years. Given that a tree would have very gradually interrupted light as it grew, I don't believe the person claiming nuisance is being caused would have any basis for suing the tree owner under this law. As far as I know the only legislation governing distance of neighbouring trees/hedges from windows is the high hedges act, and it doesn't sound as though that applies here.
  11. Just googled this, first I've heard of it. Looks and sounds bad, I don't know how far through the soil the heat would travel. I think a bigger concern could be the toxic smoke/gas leaks penetrating the soil under roads and surfaces with no where to escape. Could well be bad news for a lot of trees in the near future, watch this space...
  12. Pics too, and an apology to Claus for putting a K in the thread title!
  13. Well my copy arrived yesterday only to be commandeered by my 4yo daughter for an hour (incidentally, 'daddy's special work book with cartoon bears looking for trees' appeals to all ages!), so I've only quickly flicked through it. Initial impression is one of great quality. Excellent quality photos, binding and even three different colour ribbon page markers - simple things please me It's a fair bit bigger than the research for amenity trees body language book, at 1.7kg a bit heavier too. And looking at the contents I reckon it covers a lot more as well. My only gripe is the 'comic book' typeface, which I find a bit difficult to read at times, at the index is normal though I look forward to some quality time with this big bad book...

Love Life: Wake up early, slightly frosty. Out the door, frost no more. Start the car, nice so far. Near the job, wipers bob. Cup of tea? Ideal to me. Rain all gone, the sun shone. Up the trees, an increasing breeze. Clouds come back, the sky turns black. A sudden downpour, then no more. One tree downed, me half drowned. In the van at lunch, we all munch. Waiting for sun, then the final run. A drip left over, on some clover. A bue sky backdrop, to the glistening snowdrop. Spring is here, my favourite time of year. The rain and sun, can be quite fun. The buzz of life, all around is rife. Cast aside your strife, love this life.

    Little thread revival, anyone?......
  16. 'scuse me ignorance, but both? I thought it was just the body language vta encyclopedia which was new... It's not the first time my arboreal enthusiasm has gotten me laughed at!
  17. eBay no 221724369460 Saw these and thought se7enth might be interested...
  18. I'd say beech, possibly some woodwart on that last photo...
  19. Try here http://www.ancienttreeforum.co.uk/resources/ancient-trees-books-shop/
  20. Isn't that the truth! That and many contractors quite happy to remove dead wood on the pretence of safety; and possibly worried about the lack of regular work if they didn't touch any tree in the name of 'h&s' unless genuinely necessary. I think it's a case often of 'I'll carry on as I have because it works, no need to read that...'
  21. Have you looked here http://www.beanstreesandshrubs.org/
  22. Just seen his new book, the encyclopedia of VTA on Sorbus intl. Even at nearly £75, I just had to! Been waiting for a while for this one...
  23. Felling most of the roadside trees is not the lesson which should have been learnt! More like following through on reports of dangerous trees, or having an inspection regime in place.
