  1. I use a makita lxt for all sorts, copes well after two years of sporadic but hard use - heavy drilling, getting wet and dusty etc. It's 18v (I think) and the 4ah battery lasts a good while and charges quickly. Screwfix usually have it on offer in various deals for around £100, as well as a dewalt which various mates rave about...
  2. My latest tangent leans in the direction of reviewing the available methods of either quantified risk assessments or tree valuations, and their effectiveness and suitability. Not as interesting as fungi finding sniffer dogs though!
  3. Cheers guys, I am none the wiser (bar a slight hissing noise from around the throttle body, so hopefully just a leaky vacuum hose) so off to the garage tomorrow...
  4. Courtesy of the good folks over at uktc, http://www.burnley.gov.uk/custom/plnapps/results.php?ref=APP/2016/0083&from_date=2016-02-01&to_date=2016-08-31&search=search&recs=302& Someone is going to be sleeping poorly for a few days I reckon!
  5. ... Any suggestions before I grate my knuckles and start the swearing? Tis a 2002 Ford Galaxy 2.3 zetec. I'm not sure yet, but it may only be when the engine is warm. Runs fine, but just dies at idle, or if too slow on the gear changes. Any help appreciated before I (probably) end up taking it to a garage to be checked for fault codes... Thanks all...
  6. Or do the la have an online register of planning apps, and would any TPOs and their supporting evidence be included?
  7. THC and CBD is a great reliever of many things, look at Sativex for a 'big pharma' start, and avoid any artificial cannabinoids like the plague. My wife uses cannabis oil for MS pain, she says it has been life changing. Likewise my father in law has AS, and has gone through all the meds up to the last ditch Itanercept (spelling) which pretty much guarantees cancer at some point. He has been on it about two years now, worked incredibly well for six months, and now wishes he'd never started it - so many side effects and a massively reduced immune system. He also uses cannabis and it helps no end with the munchies being the only downside! The legal CBD oils available vary in quality (some lesser brands tested at virtually non existent levels) and do help, but it's proven that whole plant extracts work better - THC and CBD are the two most abundant cannabinoids, but I think there are at least 60. PM me if you want more info...
  8. Thanks guys, certainly some food for thought...
  9. That's the trouble, lots interests me, but I can't settle on a theme...
  10. Hi all, I'm getting slowly closer to needing to decide on my independent research project and am really struggling to settle on an idea, anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to do something based around the accuracy / predictability of tree related subsidence, or how trenching alongside trees affects their vitality/structural safety, whether current practice adequately protects trees on development sites, or perhaps something entirely different?! Thoughts please...
  11. Heartbreaking stuff, here's hoping you can get back on track quickly...
  12. Try the arboricultural association website, they may have something...
  13. Nice find, unusual to see that on branches with (presumably) a lot of flex, being so far out...
  14. Sound advice, thank you. Confirms my intial feelings really, I certainly don't want to put my hard earned reputation on the line! Many thanks...
  15. Hi all, turned up on site yesterday to carry out a 5837 survey and found that the only two TPOd trees on site (barely worthy of their protection to be honest, two scrappy 4 and 6m, and between 150 - 200mm dia. holly) had been left with just half a meter of soil undisturbed around their bases. The rest of the site has been stripped, I'd guess between 200-300mm of surface soil has gone, with roots sticking up and torn all round the trees. I know this isn't uncommon, but what would you do? The client even stated they were wanting to retain the trees either side of the new access. I expect they will struggle on through and survive anyway (trees generally don't give up easily, and it is the 'best' time of year for such an action), but it puts me in an awkward situation. 1. Ignore it and write up the report as though I never saw it. 2. Mention it in the report and drop my client in the thick of a TPO breach. Thoughts please...
  16. Spawning?! My garden pond is still covered in a half inch of ice!
  17. The content and delivery is great, it's certainly going to have me up my game! Honestly, I'm already well behind on the assignments , and have a lot of catching up to do
  18. Yes it's correct that the classes overlap, which I didn't realise either. I just started at Barcham before Christmas, so anyone starting there next year, I'll see you then
  19. Rail arb and veg work is like torture if you have any work ethic. I did about a year on it a few years ago, couldn't stand it any longer. It's true, you rely on the coss before you can go lineside, then get told your making others look bad, then the supervisor comes along and tells everyone to slow down! Then occasionally there's a mad rush on a job due to a surprise inspection that the same supervisor rings and warns you about! Madness, and no job satisfaction at all...
  20. Cheers, have you used either before? Only f-d's name is familiar...
  21. Hi all, anyone able to recommend a reputable no nonsense consultant to look at a single mature tree in Reading? Much obliged...
