Hi Rich, yes too far for me. You might try Chantler Timber or else sawmills in your area if it is good quality and a full lorry load or more. Good luck with it - hope you find a buyer for milling not just firewood - Ash is a very useful and beautiful timber.

I pay around £70, possibly £85 per cubic metre for good clean Ash with only minor end splitting and minimum mid log diameter of around 400mm. This works out about £2.50 to £2.80 per hoppus foot. This would be the price delivered to my yard. Sadly I struggle to get hold of decent milling ash these days - I suspect a lot of good ash just gets sold to the firewood companies. I guess it is too easy for a forestry firm to just sell the whole lot at £45 per ton for firewood rather than separate the best and try and get a bit more for maybe one lorry load. I am not after any right now but do you have some for sale?

Every now and then I need to bring a load of logs to my yard (for milling) that is just too little for a normal timber lorry. Is anyone interested in doing occasional haulage jobs (including loading) of usually about 5 to 10 tons of round logs? (Nothing long - usually 2.5 to 3.7m long) They would always be coming back to my yard near Newport South Wales, and usually from within 30 miles or so. I would love to have a small lorry with loader crane but my use would be far too infrequent to justify the cost. Anyone who is interested, I currently need to bring one load back from near Hereford and another from near Evesham. Any takers?

I'm in South East Wales and desperately need sawlogs. Especially Lime (at least 10 inches diameter) and Ash and Sycamore (at least 15 inches diameter). length not important as long as 8 feet or more. I pay around £70 per ton delivered, or a bit less if I have to collect. Single stems or whole lorry loads bought. Anything out there? This is an ongoing requirement, not just a one-off.

Great, always good to hear of hardwood logs on offer. Most of my logs at the moment are from the Forest of Dean - well the forest grown ones anyway.

Forgot to mention I also pay £70 per ton for Lime, and I'm not fussy about size as long as it is at least 10 inches diameter and 8 feet long!

If anyone is struggling to sell good size hardwood logs near me I pay good prices for: Ash, Elm, Sycamore, Walnut, Yew, and even Alder and Birch. The only hardwoods I really don't want are Poplar and Willow, and I do have plenty of Oak at the moment. Sycamore and Ash I am especially low on, so any stems at least 8 foot long and 18 inches diameter give me a call and I will pay around £70 per ton if you will deliver them to me. PM me or ring 01633 400720 during business hours. I will also buy a mixed load which includes firewood size logs and milling size logs, but I pay a bit less for that!

I like the look of some of those elm butts. Anybody got any nice ones for sale without the rot going up the middle? If so I may pay good money for them.... I took delivery of 30 tons of nice chestnut butts today, but I always need oak and elm.

Hi Lindisfarnecharcoal, that's fine, I have had some helpful replies, and maybe one or two leads. The questions about red diesel on the road are interesting ones and seem to keep coming up. I recently bought a book entitled "Agricultural Vehicles on the Road" by Mike Braithwaite, who apparently is the UK's leading expert on the matter. I haven't read it all yet, but as far as I can see you can only use red on the road up to a maximum of 1 mile when travelling between two pieces of land owned (or rented) by you or your employer. Now I have asked a few farmers about this, and frankly it is nonsense to suggest they even come close to complying, and everyone I ask tells me a different story. I assume that if I buy an ag registered 4X4 truck this rule will apply to me (which is fine), but would anyone like to correct me on this?

Thanks for the replies, I do need a lorry rather than a Land Rover size vehicle, but good luck with selling the disco. I also did spot the bedford advertised in classifieds, but that sold a few weeks ago. I will be selling my old Bedford MK when I find a replacement, but that needs quite a bit of work, and is not ag registered. Will be a great source of parts for someone though. Cab is rotten, engine not the best, but everything still works....

Is anyone selling their ag registered 4x4 truck? I need something with a carrying capacity of 4 tons or so, possibly one of the bedfords, but preferably something a bit more up to date and easier to drive. If it has a meaty crane fitted that is great, but if not I will get one fitted. I have maybe £4000 to £6000 to spend. I understand the Layland Daf army trucks are good, but they never seem to be ag registered. I will need it to do road speeds occasionally, so tractors are out. Any offers?

Distance could be an issue, but if you have a few maybe we could put together a load for a timber lorry to keep transport costs down. Also of course access could be important. Hi guys I am a new member, and I want to see if anyone has good size oak logs they want to sell for a good price. I don't mean firewood type money but a decent price for decent logs for milling. I have a mobile sawmill and I am always looking for good oak logs, but also walnut, cedar of labanon, and maybe others. I really only like logs at least 18" diameter at the mid point, but I don't mind a few knots or bends. I am sure plenty of you guys must have logs too good to chop up that you would like to get some cash for? I am in South East Wales, and can collect within the area, or if you have a few I can arrange for a professional haulier to get them for me. Let me know what you have.
