  1. we have a Bosch 40m but this gives you distance and hight and what we use now https://uk.hawkeoptics.com/laser-range-finder-pro-600.html £119 here https://www.clubhousegolf.co.uk/acatalog/Hawke-LRF-600-Laser-Golf-Rangefinder.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1ufC9-SZ3gIVCrDtCh0s9A7PEAQYASABEgJPGPD_BwE
  2. I have been using a spark tester that has got a plastic body with a spring inside glows orange when a spark is present large croc clip on the body of the plug to a confirmed good earth and as a last resort the MK1 thumb and little finger to good earth only after a number of no glows on the spark tester :-)
  3. Yes mate plastic spacer in place and new plug fitted at the first fail and I have tried it with another old but working plug with no result I tell you Its vodoo !!!!!!! but thanks for the advice mate Rog
  4. This has got me pulling my hair out !! The story so far we have a spare ms181 as a last resort back up and a bit of snedding if Req saw ,the bloody thing is about 3 years old no more than 2hrs use if that, still on the original bar and chain that’s how much its done!!!! Same fuel as the other saws never old stuff , well its always been a a bit unpredictable on the starting front probably why its got so low hours on it anyway a couple of weeks ago I was cutting a few small logs down to size for splitting the saw had been running for Aprox 5 mins I stopped it and as per norm it wouldn’t start right I thought lets see what’s causing this normal tests Ahh no spark good new plug nothing ummm slapped the spark tester on nothing Ahhh the old coil problem disconnected the stop leads on the coil Nothing umm new coil then. Ordered a new Stihl £38 one, fitted and yaaa away we go 1 hour later the thing wont start normal tests and NO SPARK umm must be a dodgy coil I contacted the supplier and a new one sent out ( Top marks to LS Engineering by the way very nice people !! ) new one fitted ran for about a min then NO SPARK Arrrgggghh if I adjust it /move the coil it will work momentarily SOMETIMES , just to add I am rotating the fly wheel anti clockwise with a drill plug out , if I stop and then try again invariably there will be no spark Stop wires disconnected Resistance checks 1.7meg ohms through the coil to earth 1 ohm resistance through earth bolts to coil 2 Ohm resistance through earth bolts to cylinder head Well I’m sure it can’t be another dodgy coil, fly wheel (which is where I thought we were going with this) strongly magnetic and coil gap is set to the correct setting feeler gauge set 10 tho Tried various settings no difference !! So to summarise good earth, all connections abraded degreased and tight stop wires disconnected during test process New coil, strong magnetic attraction on the fly wheel correct air gap What else is there !!!!!!!

  8. Hi guys, just after a bit of advice we have been asked to reduce (height and width) an established Magnolia tree that has been left to its own devices for a number of years. The customer is only wanting it reduced now as there is a danger of limbs failing in the wind, the canopy is fairly vigorous on multi stems of an average 4-5 inch diameter to a height of 20-25 feet She wants it down to about 12 feet, so there is some protection from the wind by a close by hedge my problems are 1, have never reduced a Magnolia tree and 2, I have heard they are susceptible to die back , this I need to avoid as the tree is of great sentimental value to the customer My thoughts are a reduction over a number of years rather than straight in, so as not to stress the tree to much in one go. But as I said I have no experience to draw on as I have never reduced one before !! Any advice would be welcome at this stage !!! Cheers guys
  9. Thanks for the replys guys sorted now very much appreciated :-)

  18. May sound like a dumb question (and prob is) but what do you class as wood chip? we have a small timberwolf 13/75 for small jobs and bring in a 230 for the bigger stuff so if I stuff a laylandii through it most of the "chip" is green leaf I would class that as Mulch same as if I processed laurel, but if we feed the best part of a Ash through then again there is a lot of green waste with wood so would you call this wood chip or mulch ? only asking as we are looking to offer (read that as offload) some to allotments and horse owners but not sure as to what to call it, if it has a high level of foliage is it chip or mulch ?
  19. My dog looks after my kit in our yard here he is with my daughter, good luck with that one if you try to get my gear
  20. I find the best way to deal with Hung up trees is to climb into the middle put my flip- flopped feet either side of the trunk and cut through, dont worry about sliding down the tree as it splits the chainsaw will slow your descent if you slide into it
  21. I went on the Friday its the first one I have been to and I found it enjoyable, lots of kit to see and the Sthil guys were very friendly and informative. The one bit that I was disappointed with was the Timberwolf stand, there were quite a number of sales/representatives manning the stand but they were all huddled together in both the display stands, I went with the intention of placing an order for a 230 if the price was right, but despite spending 10-15 mins looking over the models no one came to speak to me they were all interested in drinking coffee/tea and chatting with each other . I went for a look round the other chipper guys and I must say the Forst people were very nice but looks like the Greenmech man did, it im having a demo shortly. Apart from that I enjoyed the show and spent more than I planned to and I will go again
  22. Hi mate, Thanks for that:thumbup1: I was sort of heading in the right direction and ya I have had my fair share of moments but im still here. I need to get the lad on the correct path now though, its all changed now days ( violin playing in the back ground ) thanks for the reply Rog
  23. Hi Guys, Im just after some advice in trying to clarify the situation regarding chainsaw qualifications My position is I have been using chainsaws and felling trees in a farm/private capacity for around 30 years and up to-date no accidents or incidents but doing it my way (that would make a good song title ) which I agree is not the best method. Now my daughter's boy friend is in the process of starting his own business up as a gardener, he already works in this field professionally and is going to be branching out on his own. I have decided that as he wants to include tree work as part of his services I will pay for him to get his certs and I will tag along as well So am I right in thinking that Lantra is the qualifying body that over arches these certificates i.e. if it is a CS30/31 Lantra course it is an official and accepted qualification Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have assumed things before and got caught out Cheers Rog
  24. I was going to go till I saw the price me the wife and two poor students £120 for a day out is taking the Liquid BASC game fair £10 and a cracking day out
  25. I had a load of Euc a year ago as said best split green. but another use I got out of it (worked green and then dried out) was to make a large mallet for a mate who does hedge laying. I figured if its so hard to split when dry it should make a good mallet head, he has used it a few times and he recons its not bad at all. worth bearing in mind
