  1. My least favorite word is "just". "can you not do it for less?" Of course I can. I can even do it for nothing. But I'm not going to. Be firm. People smell it a mile off when you're desperate or weak & try it on. Don't confuse firm with rude though. Always make sure you & the customer are clear on what needs done so there's no confusion. If they ask for extra, say "Sure, if we get time we can add that on. Say call it £...". We've all been had in one way or another & being firm & polite doesn't come overnight. On another note I'm a member of the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses". You get lots of benefits with the £150 ish a year nembership. One of them is free legal representation which is handy to know you have. Also includes free tax investigation insurance which costs about the sane as well & you can have up to about £150-£200 worth of treatment (physio, osteo, whatever) a year too. Best money u spend a year. Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
  2. Link doesn't work. Get rid of that iPhone shite & go android 😛😁 Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. Another thing to consider is how is it fair that I have to pay to advertise to find work but a council can work off a list of people who gave no choice but to contact them?? Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. I wonder if the same goes on in other industries. Does anyone know if the council quotes for private work for say plumbing, electrics, etc etc? Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  5. In the interests of fairness, that means we should also have access to all tpo applications so we can quote if we want. Does that mean the outcome of a decision could be difft considering they stand to make money if it's ok'd? Playing devil's advocate fir a min, you also have to look at it from a customer point if view. "Why would the tree work industry want less competition? Just to make mire money". That's how Joe blogs would see it. As much as you & I have subsidised all the gear they use, don't forget, so have the customers. I've had to drop the price of a job by around £300 once to get a job against a council quote. I didn't mind cause I advertised on gumtree & had all the logs taken away for free. 6. As mentioned, communicate with the neighbour. It's the best way to way to avoid problems. An old couple who possibly can't afford to have them cut down & maybe too embarrassed to enter dialogue for that reason so be friendly & honest. Offer to go halves on the cost but If it's the right house for you then in the grand scheme of things it may be worth paying to get them removed. You may well find your home insurance may stipulate it. Bear in mind though that nesting season is pretty much started now just for another spanner in the works! 7. My favorite tool for bbq's is my blower. Cuts thru the smoke stage in no time. Or just use a hair dryer. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  8. It's a good saw as long as it's in decent order. How come your other half isn't asking about it? He should know it's value. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  9. As mentioned already, the jobs got your name to it not his. The standard of work is his not yours. The two don't match, so get him to redo it with you or leave. If he's taking the piss & jeopardising your livelihood then he's no friend. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  10. When you say better in every other way can you tell me a bit more please? I'm genuinely interested to hear people's views who actually wear them rather than people who want you to buy them. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  11. I use the Stihl trousers & thought they were light & soft & comfortable. Are the pfanner ones lighter, softer & more comfortable? Also are they harder wearing to outlast the Hiflex ones? At the end of the day they're there to protect me from accidents but we all work out what we can & can't afford... Sorry for the thread hijack. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  12. Lend her a jacket & a wooly hat. She'll be fine. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  13. Interesting setup! 2 things that pop to mind: 1) is the angle grinder clamped securely enough. 2) whether it's gonna spin too fast. A resourceful setup 😀 Let us know how you get on. Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
  14. Cheers for the heads up 👍 Did you just have it running for ages? I'll try the free way 1st then probably end up spending money.... Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  15. I'll be getting a planer thicknesser in the future & will be using an old Dyson. I've used it with my hand held planer & it worked fine. I like the idea of blending a hoover & a wheelie bin though! 😁 Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
  16. A clever way to charge £25 for a pair of gloves. Waste of money if you ask me. Thermal rubber palmed ones fir me too 👍 I sometimes use welding gauntlets for thorny stuff but you do lose sensitivity to what you're doing. Just use a fork or a saw head on a long arm hedge cutter body. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  17. What do you mean "budget"? How much are you looking to spend? Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  18. It's smaller than I thought but that could be a plus especially when transporting them. That's a good shout to hire one 1st. If you're doing biggish areas you may end up wishing you'd got a bigger machine though... Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  19. Agreed, that looks well underpowered but not having used it I could be wrong. Look for a Scag/Ferris/Great Dane type walk behind. Or look at YouTube too for ideas of what might suit you. Sent from my D6603 using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. 200 is a lot of pallets to store & denail! I got a local pallet yard who I normally raid for kindling & bonfires when we go offroading. They stack a load of broken/damaged slats on a pallet which may be easier to sift thru for materials. I think the Mrs has come around to risking having my "handiwork" in the kitchen... 😁 Best thing is you can do a little section/units at a time, so she may say "Oi! Thats nothing like the photos you showed me" & you may get a call 😄😄😄 You definitely an inspiration! Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
  21. I like it mate. Funnily enough I mentioned a similar idea to my Mrs & got a very "sceptical" look... I never considered pallets, I was just gonna buy timber from the yard I get my fencing timber from. The idea appeals to me as it's so bespoke to the space you have. I like the glued/screwed approach, I was thinking more the "Sunday League" route too 😄 but feel well inspired now! Just got to get the garage built 1st 😲😁 Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
