While taming down a poorly holm oak leaning over a road in Ferring, all day long the local 'retired/nothing to do but moan/busybodies' kept asking if we had permission to do this. Eventually I got fed up and when one old guy asked the same question I replied 'Actually no we havent, but we had a spare day so thought it would be a laugh. If I give you £10 will you promise not to tell anyone' His face was priceless - I did apologise after a few seconds for being facetious - he did then see the funny side. Its a fact that ivy and weeds ALWAYS grow over from next door. I've NEVER had a customer admit it starts in their garden.

That looks horrendous. Hope it heals well with no infection. Lucky it wasnt 18 inches higher. Amazing how many mis-haps we have when we've finished all the 'hazardous' work and we are heading for the easier, mindless phase of the day (maybe another thread there).

I used to dabble in log sales - just my own produce. By the time I cut and split it then someone phones and wants 3 bags delivered!!! Its not worth it for me. Maybe living in a semi and using my front garden for processing is a major limitation. As they say - you need to take an evolutionary step to make it worthwhile, or just accept the hassles and treat is as a hobby (a low paying one under my circumstances). I accept that I can make more dosh just arbing and leave the logs for those with the space and machinery. Theres not a right or wrong answer on this one really - make it work or give it a miss.

Spot on - if i had read that in time I wouldnt have needed to add my comment to the number plate thread. Never met a REAL arborist who was a pillock- we all want to do a top job and live a life while we still can. I suggest to anyone who feels sorry for themselves cos they havent had a break... just do somethimng to make it happen. Google the lyrics to TIME by PINK FLOYD and you'll get the idea

I assumed this thread was about arb trucks so I dont see an issue with doing something to help the image of the company. When we advertise (through whatever medium) we are doing it to try to get people more interested in using us to do the work. This is a fun thread and should be kept as such. Theres no shame in spending a bit of your hard earned cash on a fun plate. If Elfinwood is concerned about pe@nis size just start another thread. Its our money, after weve paid all our taxes we can spend it on what we like. If we dont make enough to have a bit of fun - we can always work harder.

Glad you are OK after this experience. While I can't say I am keen on the litigative society we are becoming ,I think anyone who sells something like that (knowing it is so wrong or dic@ing around with such incompetence) that it really is lethal - should be taken to the cleaners. We all spend a great deal of time/effort keeping ourselves and others safe then some James Hunt sells something like this.

Just been checking out similar things. Theres a company that makes chains with 19mm thick links which are guaranteed to resist cutting with 42 inch bolt croppers (even when levered on the ground). They aint cheap but they slow the barstuards down or even stop them.

Cheers WoodEd - I got the track built and connections all sorted after about 5 weeks faffing about. Must admit my son and chief climber (Anthony) did all the technical filming and dubbing. He also holds the lap record.

A couple of years back, rushing about one evening to do some quotes. Stopped at the local garage and filled up. As the pump went past £60.00 I noticed the price per ltr was wrong, then I noticed the filler nozzle was GREEN (My truck prefers diesel)! For the only time in my life I had grabbed the wrong one. The guy in the garage was very good, he gave me the number of the local fuel recovery mob and insisted I didn't start the engine. It cost me £120 for them to come and empty the tank. That was £180 in all for no fuel and a two hour delay. The guy at the garage said not to worry they get that every week. Oh what a numpty

I'm not complaining - just commenting, still got more business there and she paid the agreed amount. I'll be going back though not expecting any sort of tip. As I said it was just the way she was making it clear she had overpaid by a few percent and wanted it back. Based on her annual 4 week holidays in Australia I don't think there is much of an issue with with disposable income. Had I inadvertantly overpaid by a few percent I think I would let it go. Maybe thats why she lives there and I don't.

When my team leader returned he handed me a cheque which was rounded up by £20.00 (not am unusual event, I'm pleased to say). Cheers! I just filed it away with some others to pay in. That evening MRs Tightwad (not her real name) phoned up and the conversation went something like this Mrs T - Hello, did Anthony give you the cheque? Me - Yes, thanks very much, they told me you were happy with the tree. Mrs T - Yes, they are a nice bunch. BUT I think I made the cheque out for £x50 by mistake we had agreed £x30...... Me - That's right, I haven't paid it in yet though ... what would you like me to do? Mrs T - Erm... well to save me writing another one you can just take £20 off the next job in October. **** Price already agreed for October phase - so it WOULD be a reduction**** Me (stunned in disbelief) errr.... yes if thats what you would like.
