Hi we dont grow them but we have a good friend that does and there is a lot of pruning involved (every year) to get the trees to grow into a nice shape and they also suffer a lot from aphid attack and need to be sprayed yearly. hope this helps p.s you will need to do a soil test as they will not grow in some types of soil. thanks chris

  10. Hi All just wondering how many of you make a full time liveing from logs or if not what else you do as well as logs ? The reason for this is that i produce around 200 cubic metres per year and the business is growing to the degree that it is more than i can do at weekends and evenings but not quite enough for full time so i am considering other options to run alongside the log business.preferibly tree/wood related. thanks chris:confused1:

  15. hi i have just phoned vosa at bristool and you will require a taco if the gross train weight exceeds 3500 kg ,you do not need a taco if the gross train weight is below this, hope that helps. best wishes chris
  16. hi please correct me if i am incorrect but i dont think you need to use a taco if the towing vehicle has rear seats and windows e.g landrover county, showgun or diahatsui fourtrack as these are classed as passenger vehicles and not commercials.thanks chris.
  17. hi benbound when we started doing logs we did a phew experments regarding volumes, the results were based on all logs being 9" long and coming from a cubic metre off cord as delivered from haulier with air gap deduction. 800x800x800 duilders bag = 0.51 cm3 which holds 300 logs loose loaded. We filled 4 off the above bags from the cubic metre of cord ,so we have gone on the policy off 1cm3 = 2cm3 when loose loaded. it would be interesting to know other peoples results/ways of working out.
  18. Hi surely you should take the ruff with the smooth e.g large logs less work, small logs more work and still make a good profit.
  19. Hi sell logs,logs and more logs:thumbup:
  20. Hi breezeblock how does that work then?
  21. hi how do you come to the conclusion that you should charge more for smaller logs. If you have a price per cubic metre/truck load does this mean you charge less for someone wanting larger logs say 18" because there is less work involved.
  22. hi i bought a cheap £80 saw from ALDI superstore made by british mower company and it has cut up hunderds of tonnes of cord wood for logs and still going strong. If it only lasted 12 months it will still be cheaper than stihl ect and all parts are avialable (havent needed any yet in four years off ownership).
