  1. theres a biiiiig old beech near me which has these "spheroplasts", or whatever theyre called, all over the underside of its main horizontal branches, im thinking it might have something to do with compression. just speculation, ill get some pics next time im passing
  2. are they by any chance related to / the same thing as "burrs" ?
  3. saying that, i cant find a reference to "spheroplasts on trees" on the internet, so maybe someone's got the name wrong
  4. i have heard of spheroplasts, small spherical growths similar to warts, growing on the stem or main branches of broadleaves. usually no bigger than a marble in my experience. can be broken off quite easily. i have seen them most often on beech.
  5. i dont deal with much firewood but just out of curiosity, if you were found "guilty" of infesting someones house with woodworm or similar, is this sort of thing covered by your insurance? (i presume public liability.. or do you not need it for firewood sales?) just being nosy really
  6. haha, nope! (but it is a cathedral) forgot to mention, best bit about the job- all logs/ brash staying on site (firewood/ habitat piles). score!
  7. nice bit of firewood for ya there! and that walnut is immense! cool pics
  8. today we removed a small alder and reduced two of its neighbors, in order to reveal a rather nice view.... The remaining trees will now be regularly managed in order to maintain the view... as well as an application pending for reduction of the beech trees visible behind the reduced alder. recognize the building?
  9. i agree, but the fact that the wall crack had appeared recently (last year or so) indicates a sudden shift in the root plate, most likely caused by root decay. one things for certain the tree's a gonner
  10. my mate took this pic of me getting wobbly on a skinny alder. i quite like it
  11. heres some Meripilus for ya. Fruit bodies had been appearing for several years but the customer was unaware of the significance. this year the tree failed to produce leaves. the cracks in the wall are recent and i believe indicative of a shifting root plate. Take cover!!!! edit- the tree is beech, and the fruit bodies are appearing around the full circumference of the stem
  12. been away from the forum for a while so not up to speed on any recent topics- but i couldn't resist the competition so here's my fungal offerings! Auricularia auricula-judae Phellinus igniarius Scleroderma citrinium
  13. i guess your right yeah, although it doesn't go into masses of detail on "how to safely pick up a log" etc etc. if i was doing the sort of larger, big kit, big team jobs some of you guys do my risk assessment would no doubt run into several pages! (in which case it would be impractical to write out every day)
  14. i see what you mean, but the site specific one does cover basic stuff like keeping the work area tidy, using PPE etc etc, as well as location/ access details etc etc. Most of my work is small back garden stuff so for example of i am pruning an apple with a silky/ secatuers, on my own, the r/a will be very simple. again, the customer is asking for full risk assessments and method statements so i will be providing them. my question is about the law regarding these forms
  15. yes i realise that, i guess my main question is the "law" bit. i will still be writing up ms's and ra's for this customer
  16. Self Employed Sole Trader- Risk Assessments? I have been asked to send over risk assessments and method statements to a customer. Although I do a site specific RA for every job, I don't have any generic risk assessments or method statements. A quick search on Arbtalk brought up plenty of templates etc etc (thanks to all who posted them up in the past), but I also came across a post that said that by law, companies with fewer than 5 employees do not have to complete risk assessments. Is this true? and if so, does that mean I don't need a generic or site specific RA? (I am a sole trader and occasionally work with another couple of arbs who have all their own insurances etc). I currently have public liability insurance, if that is relevant. Thanks in advance Chris
  17. hahha, they could have filmed the whole new series at that one job, some of the stuff i saw!
  18. on friday, felled a small dead cherry and replanted with another cherry. the weird part was the customer had booked in a separate tree team to do the back garden (connie hedge reduction), another gardener to do some weeding/ maintenance, another firm to do some turfing, another separate guy to do some paving and remove brash and yet another to grind out a stump. yikes! all of these different co's booked in on the same day when one could have probably done it all on their own.
  19. nature is ancient and incredibly complex, we already know this... combining science with some sort of strange theology sounds like a step backwards to me, not forwards.
  20. whereabouts in the north east are you? edit: put your location up on your profile
  21. i had to demonstrate bowline, prussic, figure 8, figure 8 loop.. and i think that's it. possibly butterfly too. i did not have to demonstrate any tree ID knowledge in my assessment.
  22. how do we feel about this? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NSk_ZeAH_I]YouTube - CBC News: Sunday - Richard Dawkins (Full - Highest Quality)[/ame]
  23. LancsMike- i too have watched the Zeitgeist documentaries, found them really interesting, if slightly "dubious". The 9/11 stuff in particular is a real eye- opener.
  24. although this thread has deviated slightly from its original subject, i would like to see it continue. lets all try to play nice, we've already had some thought provoking responses so lets see if we can keep it going.
