spiral cracks can be caused when a tree which has grown twisted is "untwisted" by a change of wind direction (imagine twisting a rope the "wrong way"). apparently this rarely leads to failure. of course more information (pics, targets etc) would help

no, no and no. you got the deadwood hint though- we are dealing with a saprobe i should have been clearer with the mushroom hint- by this i mean "classic" mushroom shape, "stem and cap" style. not a bracket carry on...
