  1. We've broken Arbtalk mate, Steve's gonna kill us:lol:
  2. Ian, The whole quote thing seems to have gone a bit odd. Your last post was even more buggered than mine. Accountants like you to be Ltd so they can charge you to do Quarterley accounts and sort the red tape. I obviously cant tell you whats best for you, in your individual case, so getting your accountant to go through it with you properly, would be my advice.
  3. I would doubt it, Even stuff like training isn't strictly tax deductable so I think you might struggle with gym membership. Worth a word with the accountant though I would have thought.
  4. Yep you're right, I've just checked, you have to pay yourself say minimum wage(minimal tax) then you can pay dividend as 'top up' even if calculated monthly(based on projected profit) then it's tax free, does that make more sense!!? Sorry mate, you are still wrong. Dividends are not tax free. The basic idea is that if you earn a decent amont of money you will be paying 40% tax on it, if you take a small salary and claim the rest as dividend payments you can reduce your tax bill slightly. I think the rate for dividends up to 150k is about 35%. On small amounts, up to about 35-40K ish you pay 10%. It can be worth doing, but IMO if you are only earning 35K a year, the additional red tape and expenses of being ltd would not be worth the trouble. I dont know why your quote has appeared under my name and your quote is underneath. Anyone know why?
  5. Congratulations, get used to being tired mate. Think you are allowed to wear your happy, smug face all day mate:thumbup1: Shouting ' who's the Daddy' optional.
  6. From what I can make out it seems like everyone now agrees. Happy days.
  7. You can offset all these things against taxable profit as they are justifiable business expenses. Profit = turnover - expenses. If you dont pay much tax, you aren't making much money. Doesn't matter how clever your accountant is, he claims for what is allowed under the rules. As someone says, the only way to pay no tax is to make no money. Dean, if your accountant isn't making the best of allowable expenses, shout at him or get a better accountant. Although if you need to shout at him to tell him what to do, get a new one anyway. Ian, you cant pay salary as a dividend.
  8. Decided not to quote anyone in my response as the quoting function seems to have gone a bit odd on this thread. My original opinion was that it would be hard to make a decent ROI having spent 40k on a firewood business, and ill stick with that. There are so many selling logs who source the wood as a bi-product from tree work (for free) that anyone buying in wood to process is already at a competitive disadvantage. As someone said, if you are simply doing it to keep ticking over, or to keep staff busy at quiet times then thats different. I dont agree with the lack of opportunity for speculation by investment in the current time though.
  9. I started this time last year with huge amount of support and info (and timber) from arbtalk. Already had L200, spent less than £10k and have everything I need to hopefully sell up to 200 cubic metres/year for the next 3 years, if that works I may look at expanding.......and if it doesn't work out that way I won't be in financial trouble Dont really understand why you put someone elses post under my name, with my post under it mate. Dont even know how you did it actually. Not even sure if you agree with me or not. Now I see, this thread seems to have gone a bit odd. Same happened when I posted
  10. Was just curious, did most of my training with John and went climbing at his dad's farm. Haven't seen him for a while and just wondered.
  11. Windows Movie Maker: Fix The Half Green Bar Problem In The Movie Made Try copying and pasting that into your browser mate, or I think it may work as a link.
  12. no probs mate:thumbup1: No idea, Just google windows movie maker green screen or half green screen and there is loads of info. Seems to be a common prob. You can prob find step by step insructions somewhere.
  13. Dont worry about that, go and get the ramps, then you can get back and show the Xmas tree your new toy:lol:
  14. Here you go mate, you have to disable the Xvid MPEG-4 Video Decoder, apparently
  15. I had a problem a bit like that before, I just googled the problem and found the answer. Just put some key words into google and see what you find.
  16. Arb consultants- 'Skilled or Semi-Skilled' Discuss! Sorry, couldn't resist. We certainly dont need another of those:lol:
  17. If you want to store it, to dry it, it should be in a place dry enough with enough airflow for it not to get too mouldy anyway mate. If not it wont be drying as effectively as it could. I've had logs go a bit mouldy in the past but thats when I stored them in a shed with solid sides and a plastic roof. Less like a shed, and more like a sauna when it was warm. Get out there and get cutting and splitting mate. Or maybe wait a while cos i'm sure there will be loads of people posting for you later. Hopefully their advice will be the same as mine. Good luck with it anyway.
  18. Shameless and blatant Greenmech PR. I'm liking your style:thumbup1:
  19. IMO its easier to cut and split it now, it will also dry better if its split.
  20. Now you tell us. Hope you understood my points though mate, I wasn't saying YOU shouldn't be doing it, just asking if Arb consultants generally should be.
  21. We can trust you to be straight to the point, if maybe a little crude can't we mate. Have you ever considered taking up poetry?
  22. Finally, a man who sees what i'm getting at. Dont think I found a polite way of expressing it either mate but hey, in for a penny, in for a pound.
  23. You dont get my point either. There was a discussion earlier about whether an arb consultant should be doing it or whether it should be done by a soil engineer or similar. I have looked at Steve's website and he seems to be a knowledgable and qualified consultant. If a qualified and knowledgable consultant doesn't know how to work out probability of heave, its occurs to me that maybe it is outside the remit of Arb consultants generally. I dont know the answer, its not my area of expertise, you could write what I know about heave on a Post-it.
  24. Fine work there Dean. What ever happened with that tree with the scaffold round that you were posting about a while ago?
  25. Good video, that was exactly the concern I was expressing in my first post.
