  1. Is this a joke? Or someone baiting for an arguement? Why would you write that you aren't qualified and that the trees are over gardens and sheds, just to ask what time is best to prune them?
  2. At the very minimum you have to go up in line with inflation, otherwise you are essentially working for less every year.
  3. Agree, i've never worked for someone else, Very much depends on the person though, I think some people are natural employees and some are natural employers.
  4. Ill tell my brother that, he is employed and has a salary of £180 K a year plus a £20k Xmas bonus.
  5. Dont insult my intelligence, if you try and back pedal any faster you will be off out the door. I'm not offended by what you said, I just thought it was a really stupid thing to say. And to try to argue it was merely a statement and wasn't in response to Mozza's post, even though you quoted Mozza, is even more stupid.
  6. Look at you, showing off your shiny new kit:001_tt2: Good on ya,
  7. Then I think your price was ok. Although as I said earlier, its almost impossible to tell from a description.
  8. From what you have said I reckon your price was ok. I wouldn't do anything like the job you described for £ 150. Thinking the bloke they got to do it prob doesn't know much about trees either and may well end up working for a whole day for 150 quid. 50 ft is getting on for twice the size of an average house. Are you sure its as big as you seem to think?
  9. Are you suggesting that you think the AA paid the BBC? What a stupid thing to say.
  10. Pretty much impossible to say without seeing it mate. If its nearly dead, is it climbable? Much rigging involved? Easy drop zone? How many loads of chip?
  11. Wouldn't it be ironic, if the special irony face only served to sabotage all attempts at irony on the site.
  12. Or the owner of the Beemer, having just let the Mrs take it shopping:lol:

Thats a very good point. I'm not adverse to shooting the odd fluffy or feathery thing myself but will only do so if I can be sure it will be a nice clean kill. I've been shooting for 20 years, I wouldn't recommend it to a novice.
  14. As plippy suggested, it was prob a WOMAN. Seriously though, I agree, I would think it would be hard enough to monster truck your way over a couple of cars in an x5 on purpose, let alone by accident. Saying that, my parents next door neighbour, put a Honda Civic straight through a wall years ago, in similar circumstances. Thinking about it, that was a woman too:lol:
  15. I'm not really an expert, as far as literature goes I would say Hamadryad knows his stuff. He'll prob read this and give you a few pointers. If your tree ID isn't great i'd suggest some kind of field guide. Failing that, wait till you know what course you are doing and get the reading list.
  16. An automatic I would guess, pressed the wrong pedal.
  17. Exactly:thumbup1:
  18. They do say 'no publicity is bad publicity'. Think of it as advertising on telly mate:thumbup1:
  19. Cool, that does seem a bit strange though doesn't it. My degree etc isn't in Arb either so i'm not sure I can be of any help. If they are happy to let you do it though, why not. Might be a bit of a jump though. Whats your degree in? Anything remotely relevant?
  20. The best advice i've had about being on here is from Stevie Blair, he always says what he thinks, admits when he's wrong and values everyones opinions equally. He's a sound bloke with no axe to grind and I think that comes across. I'm however not quite there yet. Yes, I do always like to clear up any misunderstandings, and sometimes find myself in the odd sticky situation through being a bit blunt, and some may say condescending, (although I object to being criticised in that way by anyone who cant spell it, oops there I go again:laugh1:). I do tend to read all posts and consider my point before adding to threads so am sometimes annoyed if I get a stupid unconsidered response. I think Hama may be of the same opinion. I think this forum is like a mini community with people of all ages with different views and opinions all posting about a wide variety of topics, somehow I think a little friction may be inevitable. I find the interaction fascinating but cant help but take offence at some comments, but thats just me. I remember a while ago Stevie suggested that most on here are very similar people, maybe thats true, but I personally feel I come from a very different place to most on here. I started a landscaping and tree work business essentially because a good friend of mine (who sadly is no longer with us) told me there was no way I could ever do a proper days work. Evening after evening he and his friends would turn up to the pub, in vans after a hard days work, then I would arrive in a suit in my little 2 seater, and the banter would begin. Them telling me I couldn't do a proper days work, and me telling them that any business was easy to run using sound business and marketing principles. Anyway long story short, I ran my landscaping and tree work business for 7 years until last year, when I sold it to one of my assistants. And thats why i'm here. I am much more at home balancing a P & L or writing a marketing plan, than I am up a tree. All of my qualifications are business based and I intend to keep it that way. Think I may have gone off on a little bit of a tangent there. It seemed relevant when I was typing away. Anyway, what time does Tony finish work, I could just do with reading some pointless ramblings of an uneducated man.:001_tt2:
  21. Would that not mean having to take said picture off the dart board though paul? I personally respect u a huge amount for even contemplating your in depth entry into his Alan Rayner thread. You certainly are a brave man with much more patience than i could ever hope to have.
  22. Its for work positioning/ a secondary anchor point. Should't be using it as your main line, and cant see why you would want to. As someone else has said, there are loads of other things around which will do the job much better for use on a lifeline. It is quite good for the purpose it is designed though.
  23. Calm down mate, I wouldn't say you are arrogant, smug and annoying maybe, but not arrogant. Seriously though, it is very easy to write something on here and for it to come across as much more blunt and arrogant than it is actually meant to be. I had a bit of a barney on here the other day with someone. After criticising their English, (which, in my defence, is exceptionally bad) I realised I had hit a nerve and apologised for causing offence. I know that none of our English on here is perfect, it doesn't need to be, but when its so bad it hardly makes sense, when you are trying to help someone, it gets a little annoying. Anyway, my apology was taken the wrong way and in the end we both looked a little silly after being told off by the teacher (sorry john). My point is, from genuinely asking questions to try to give an informative answer, to our conversation becoming a bit of a childish slanging match took about 10 mins. The funny think was, the question the bloke was asking is the very thing i'm qualified to advise about. I think sometimes we all need to review what we write just to make sure it reads in the spirit it was written. Although the beauty of this forum also seems to be that people are quite straight talking and to the point, so maybe some kind of middle ground is best. Anyway it is true that not all newly qualified post grads are useless. It is true, however, that they will be lacking experience. I think thats the point thats being made, no more, no less.
  24. Dont think a Masters Degree is an alternative to a Diploma mate. Unless you already have a Degree and have just decided to take another route completely I suppose. You normally wont get on an Msc course unless you have at least done a 3 year Degree.
  25. Welwell and I told you the best way to do it, did you listen? No you didn't. Lured away from sense by tales of lassooing the monster and dragging it around like some kind of Horticultural super hero. They are pretty bloody heavy and sharp when you try and move the whole thing aren't they.
