  1. interestingly enough, paul, thats one of the reasons i jacked my ranger job over 15yrs ago now,,,became a glorified dog warden,,,crapping everywhere,(dogs),off leads, disturbing the wildlife,,,chasing and killing swans,,,,the people presume because its there dog is ok,,,,specially in berkshire ,,,,worst part of tree work for sure,,,
  2. lol,,me too ,Ive got 3 days left of no drinking january,,then I`m going to drink all five ofem,,lol yes wisewood,,,on the bandsaw,,,,
  3. made a few of these over the weekend,,,,some free form ones in yew(pics to follow) this ones Oak,,,,,taken a few orders already,,,,nice and easy,,,
  4. Ist choice =galvinised index screw(easy to take back out with impact driver) 2nd choice =/stainless steel screws (although can be soft, and difficult to remove) the box will rot after 5-7 yrs and you can rpelace fixing,,,,I put a rubber washer on to allow for growth.
  5. you bored already silky?
  6. very good for a newbie,,,,:thumbup1:if the timbers green,,,part turn it ,to get rid of the bulk then remound to sand,(after a couple of weeks, making sure you dont dry it too quickly)not jumping more than 60grit between the grits,,ie, 120/180/240/320/400,,,,,,if you jump more than this it will leave the marks from the previous grit, by the look of your first turnings,, your a natural, once you`ve learnt the basics, design, style, shape etc will come ,and you`ll become your own critic,,,,its very addictive,,
  7. wicked,,also like the back rests on the chairs,,,,,
  8. fill em with soil and plant a tree in em,,the burial they deserve,,lol
  9. cheers adam there my next boot too!!!
  10. all looks good to me!!!
  11. I`m a yurt man myself,,seen too many people get soaked in a tipi at glastonbury,,,good tips mutley,,,,,
  12. hi rik, they`ve got linseed oil on them, thinned out a bit, as it stops them going tacky, and gives the matt finnish I like, the colours are all natural,,,t, took a few to the pub last night, to get some feedback and managed to get an order for 50 of them for wedding favours,,,,it was worth the £2.30 for my diet coke(not drinking january)
  13. put a small piece of branch wood between centres, rough with a gouge to a cyndrical, part both ends down(these bits you`ll trim off later,) decide what shape you want ! then part down about 25 mill to 10mm for the silicone stopper to fit ,sand ,polish, with friction polish!cut off ends ,super glue on rubber, sand ends and finish with food safe oil,,,I`ve done thousands of these over the yrs and everything gets quicker the more you do,,I stop my bordom by doing ten of one design, then 10 of another,,,!I`ll post some pics when I get a min to show the stages, might help you.
  14. sounds tricky mate !I do a wine stopper with silicone rubber bung under three minutes from start to finnish,,faster if the musics right,,lol:thumbup:
  15. got some idea of size and any pics mate,,will help people,,,
  16. hi mutley,,,Ive spent my time making windsor chairs in the past, and struggle to justify the price I`d realistically need to sell them for, not everybody has £600 for a chair,,,but more people have a £10 for a rounders bat,or £5.00 for a englsh wood t-light, ,,, I turn the rounders bats green, in the summer on a pole-lathe and in the winter on a power lathe, the preparation is the same, split down with a wedge, then axed, then drawknifed,,,,,turn either way, allow to dry,, if you split the log down and get your bats from quarters or eigths,,then they wont split,,,if you turn it out of a piece of branch wood it will,,,,,,,I then leave them in log nets in my spare room at home for a few weeks, till they dry out, leaving the ends on with the centres marked(for remounting on lathe) and sand to a finnish, cut ends of and hand sand!!! dexta,,I use a 2" flat chisel to smooth off,the scew to mark the grooves, and a piece of wire to friction burn the decoration.
  17. oh yeah dexta,,no copy lathe all done by hand,,when you`ve made loads then the shapes come naturally,,,and too be honest it doesnt matter if there slightly different,,thats what gives them the individual touch!
  18. Shaft!! Lawless deliverance Hall pass
  19. dexta, you dont need any fancy chisels to do the baby`s rattles,,just turn a cyndrical,,mark both ends, turn the ends, then using a parting chisel turn three beads, part either side of them, then under cut with a scew chisel, !! bingo,,the fancy chisels work but not needed. woodworks,,,,,I do six shows a yr, the odd festival, but mostly word of mouth,,Im always getting asked if I have anything as somebodys birthday is coming up,,,,just about to start a web shop,,,,,
  20. LFC all the way,,,its in my blood,,,, but watch barnet for a proper roots football match when I can,,,,,,
