  1. John

Just had a look at the non-tree pictures - the "Blue" woods are truly beautiful and captured in time. Thanks for posting them. Regards Gareth Dalzell

  2. Isn't it lilke doing your driving test. If you pay for the lessons you have to be trained by an approved trainer. To do the test you have to use an approved centre. Once you've got your license no-one is saying that you're an ace driver - just that you have covered the basics and are now ready to start driving on the road and gain experience. Yes many poeple can drive a machine without doing a test but there has to be some sort of basic benchmark to allow people to start using what is a dangerous piece of equipment - car, chainsaw, pesticide. As for doing "NPTC Training" surely they just mean training towards a CoC although there is some discussion if that is the correct terminolgy.
  3. Chin up and all that - sometimes easier said than done. Sounds like you're already planning the next phase in your life - enjoy it, you deserve a break. Good luck and good karma - and let us know how things are going.
  4. It gets better every day - as they develop, grow and become little people. Then one magical day you can show him how to butcher trees that get in the way of the national grid:lol::lol: Only joking, big congratulations:thumbup:
  5. Because you're probably that guy (called KATE) that wants to do the right thing and keep your team up to speed and focused. Just don't stand on the tool box when giving the talk 'cause that'll involve working at heights
  6. The HSE will if necessary check where the failure is - whether mechanical or mechanic. They will normally find what has caused the failure pretty quickly if they need to
  7. No, but it could be incorporated into the basic CS30 1/2
  8. I guess it all boils down to being competent to carry out the task - then that leads onto who is competent and the stock answer is always "KATE" is a competent person. Meaning someone with the required Knowledge, Authority, Training and Experience. (or something like that) I'm quite happy if someone wants to correct this if it's the wrong definition.
  9. We have both a Shliesling chipper and a Saelen Shredder. We find the chipper best for cleaner bigger stuff and the shredder good for brash, hedge cuttings, soft prunings. They'll both take both to a degree but that's what we've found them best for from our experience. The Saelen is slightly different in that it has flails and chipper blades so stones could cause problems. A pure hammer mill type machine may take a bit more abuse but not many of them like stone/metal in general
  10. Just looking throught the small print now and it looks like based on the "harmonised EU reg's" these pieces of equipment were never cleared for use on this type of machine - the item itself is CE marked but that doesn't mean in it's use on a strimmer/brushcutter it meets the required safety standard. I see a problem brewing here with the suppliers and how it's has been marketed and sold to the end user. I must get out my NEBOSH Cert notes as I remember something similar there about end user. Also I see the HSE in their target audience mentioned the tree sector and construction sectors but has totally missed their main user as being Amenity Hort and landscape contractors and maintenance contractors. As the landscape sector has now been generally removed from CITB scope and construction sector and placed under a different area for funding/training and promotion they may need to amend their target audience if they want to get the message to their main users.
  11. This notice seems different and more detailed from the one we got sent to us from last month. Just curious, does that mean that we can get a full refund from the supplier now for the ones we've used and have new in stock?
  12. If we find loads of concrete in the ground we normally whack of the post flush and start with the first post at a half space - say 3ft on a 6ft post spacing fence - that way you miss all the old concrete butts and so don't have to dig them out. Works most times
  13. Mid life crisis rising again? Like others have said - you've done and achieved massive amounts. You're just looking for the big one now - perhaps you've already acheived more than you realise. Still, ambition is an excellent motivation feeling and one worth holding onto forever.
  14. Well worth a visit - open now through to end of August. It's owned by a guy called Gerry Robinson of TV fame "Gerry saves the NHS" and other trouble shooter programs. Everyone thinks he's English but I gather he's from Donegal originally and this is his main residence.
  15. Get on to Sage Instant Accounts or something similar - don't worry about a spread sheet. Your accountants will be able to work on your accounts easier in this format - all they need is a disc copy. They can do so much more with it in this format if you learn how to input the info properly - infact you'll get so much more from the info in this type of format. It does take a bit of patience to set up though. I've been running Sage now for around 15 years and it allows you to analysis you business in much more detail than I was able to with a paper entry system.
  16. I think they're in the process of forming concrete pads on the ground to support props below this branch. The garden, amongst numerous other features - has an amazing mature tree collection - well worth a visit if anyones ever in Donegal - Oakfield Park
  17. Just back from North West Ireland and was walking around an amazing privately owned garden - actually probably one of the most amazing gardens I've ever walked around! (open to the public). Amongst the mature trees there are a few that need a bit of help - its about 2m dia
  18. But of course - if in doubt get the cheque book out! If you're looking for encouragment - and now I haven't seen the machine you thinking of buying yet, but I'd still say bid low, poker face and then start writing the cheque. One of the best parts of the job buying machines everytime. (Happy days autotrader out tomorrow must scan the machinery section) Obviously my accountants taken a while to join me in this philosophy
  19. Looks like the Anchor Walling system or something similar. If its engineer designed with the back ties etc they can go up to 5-6m high. Not overly fond of the colour mix although it does seem to fit in with the vernacular (now there a word I dont get to use very often!)
  20. Well cleared. Bit of grass seed and its a usable garden again. Nice one:thumbup:
  21. That's an excellent bit of kit. We've been looking into one for our 2T volvo. This is definitely the best one I've seen yet.
  22. There was an article in Forestry Journal last year about someone who installed a Hunter woodlog burning stove and heated rad's of it with great effect - The FJ has been tossed out now but someone else might still have it kicking about. We run two Clearview stoves at home - excellent stoves but like others have said before - dry timber makes all the difference - wood burns/water doesn't!
  23. You think the info website is confusing you should try submitting online using their Gateway log-in. I've managed my employers end of year return for the past few years no problem - trying to link in the VAT online return which we have to do for the first time by the end of the week and it won't recognise my password - now thats strange cause it recognised it last week when I did the employers return. It's going to be a long night!
  24. Like others have said (as you have) - its not a problem but you're just curious. There's a bit more info on the lovely HMRC website HM Revenue & Customs: Construction Industry Scheme Some light reading and downloads for bedtime - enjoy:confused1:
