  1. wasnt too sure about watering/feeding but thought soil would be poor so couldnt hurt. we have a lot of beech at work and controling it is much easier, can take sides or tops off and it just regenerates so figured easier.
  2. Hi All, Looking for some advice please on what may be a stupid idea on my part. My mother has a well established leylandii hedge. planted around 1988, topped repeatedly over the time. Cut every year but as happens its gotten large... somewhere around 8 - 10 foot wide on the top, around 8 feet high so not massive but a pain. Where she lives is very exposed and windy on hill so a decent hedge is needed but this one is getting to be a hassle. Wondering about replanting with beech, however dont want to expose the site as wind is unreal at times. i thought about taking inside face off to trunks which would give me space to come back 2 - 3 feet from trunks and plant in young beech plants but yet retain shelter of half the outer face of hedge. questions are, is this a stupid idea? is beech likelly to cope with site? any better suggestions? Cant grind/rip out stumps as theres septic tank close by, access isnt great to say least and being a little tight. Have kit, skills etc to safetly do all work its just the idea. was thinking of removal of hedge inner in next two weeks, water like mad, spread some fertiliser etc and put beech in spring. So what does everyone think?
  3. i wouldnt touch an engine that had sat that long, seen a landy engine after 18 months out with rust in bores. Go with one thats been seen running recently
  4. ebay for me, bought heavy duty ribbed one and clamp off there. been no bother at all and greaseable
  5. wouldnt be seperated from my 357 and 372
  6. or phone yve at clarks and ask nicely for a one off special - i happen to have a lovely cut and climb in hi viz orange.
  7. chris is boss again htb (you know toby?), he didnt know whether to laugh or cry - its becoming one of those years! hope we can claim on fleet glass policy.
  8. no photos but works john deere 3720 got a stone off door today, new glass needed as door is all glass - 478 plus vat, plus fitting - eeeek!
  9. yeah the berghaus ones are lovely and can be had for a nice price online. could use to be a little tougher even around the bottom where in contact with ground most, or knee areas tougher - other than that pretty good indeed. So some ideas for alternative versions perhaps.
  10. i would imagine its dutch elm, do you have other elms in surrounding area? are they healthy or do you drive around and see odd dead elms in surrounding area - see if others also have symptoms. a local tree surgeon would easily id dutch elm for you.
  11. is that a camperdown elm i wonder. just looks familiar but i await experts.
  12. had the £1 thing twice around xmas and new year from local tesco - which was interesting as both times i had taken nearer £70 of fuel so i watched for a week or so and then the proper amount was taken - minus the £1 never seen it again since.
  13. trailer floor has marine ply coated in bitumen paint and then aluminuim chequer plate over it, seems to take a fair abuse in last few years.
  14. 372 for sure

    Wasps

destroyed a few already but ones i fear are later in season when i spend a month or so strimming estate, those lil buggers get really angry. get inside boilersuit if they can to really upset you.... found 15 nests last year, at least ten with a strimmer so plenty of stings and they are experts at finding any exposed skin, even with saw boots on, trousers tucked in, boilersuit over it, gloves etc they still get me bad. Hate them.
  16. roast chicken, roast tatties, stuffing, chipolata sausages, cabbage, peas, carrots and yorkshire pudding feel kinda full now
  17. I am wondering if anyone has seen or used this trailer and crane set up from riko, COT15-330 Riko UK :: COT15-330. We are looking at it - all be in advance of next years budget so a little ahead. I see there is an option for petrol engine powerpack, is this needed or would a 45hp john deere 3720 tractor be ok to run off its hydraulics? our max towing weight is same as trailer capacity so that limits going for anything larger. not for serious forestery, just assisting in an estate with routine felling and windblow next to drives etc, sometimes only 10 - 20 ton a year max. we are a long way from riko (aberdeenshire) so popping round for a look or a demo may not be easiest. Whats everyones thoughts?
  18. try to avoid autotune but for love of god avoid 555, works one never seems settled, doesnt quite rev enough to really go for it. bogs down easily. try for a good used 357 (some on here may have one for sale) or a 372 - i have both and love them for firewood. i do a very small amount felling with mine but a lot of firewood and they are great
  19. different application but still a pump/oil etc issue i had recently. some info i was asked for by hydraulics company, pump rate per min volume of oil in system i was suffering oil overheating issues so this was important info. can you put up your specs - i dont know much but others will
  20. 22 in shade 10am here, went to 27 in shade by lunch
  21. on naughty list by a long way but careful spot application of garlon/timbrel and some diesel.
  22. a lot of electric fencing and some pigs perhaps, this is a guess as i am not sure how much damage a few pigs would do to trees. i do wonder cause i kind of like the idea of rearing and then getting butchered own meat, so could solve two things at once.
  23. i would say avoid that one, based on a few things. looks very low down so not great working height who makes engine - spares etc what is pump capacity/oil amount? - could boil the oil easily and be painfully slow etc so overall looks very domestic indeed, i would say look at somewhere like flowfit website at their kits for log splitters or find a good local blacksmith and have a chat with them, they if any good will have all knowledge of what works, and how to build you one.
  24. my work has one, i hate it with a passion! fussy to start, even fussier as a chipper saw. never really seems to settle down into good cutting speeds, always feels like its bouncing off limiter type moment. i would rather, and have driven home for either my own 357 or 372. wouldnt buy one ever!
  25. not a skved work story but a school one. my brother once skived off school saying after a nights rain the road was flooded..... 2 problems.. we were living top of a hill the woodwork teacher drove past every day.. his excuse was reallly dumb! i can honestly say in last 25 years working i have only skived work twice making up excuse of stomach bug,,,, sadly wasnt far from truth with a miserable hangover from too many night before. now i am older the hangovers take less to achieve, longer to go away and just not worth it.
