  1. I'd say it would be classed as light industry of some sort and you are required to pay rates. That said unless you are using a huge amount of space you are most likely eligible for small business rate relief. Rateable value upto 12k and you won't pay anything.
  2. Got to laugh at these ones. Do plumbers get - I've got a blocked drain at my place. If you unclog it you can keep anything you find there as payment? Perhaps my Barber will accept my hair as payment.
  3. Not sharpening for 5 but across a few small saws, a 660 and a processor you get through files in no time.
  4. I've got an electric bench grinder and in honesty I'm not too keen on them. I can get much sharper edge with a hand file.
  5. Anyone know where you can bulk buy files for reasonable discount? I buy packs of 12 oregon files in both 5/32 and 7/32 but seem to get through a pack in a fortnight. I am wondering if it's worth buying a few hundred at a time. Can obviously email around but be good to have a head start if anyone has a contact.
  6. I'd rather you could buy direct from stihl online and they have a full eshop for all parts and consumables. Having to email a dealer to arrange to buy a 50p bolt is daft.
  7. I've bought stihl from a few dealers and I think every time have just been handed a box. I understand the Stihl Policy is more about limiting the competition between dealers (geographical linitations). Personally I think the policy is a nuisance and it does encourage me to go with other brands.
  8. I'd never heard of stockboard but having just google it, it looks like a great product. Just saw 3m by 1.5m boards in 6mm, 9mm and 12mm from £50.
  9. I agreed with Iveco kid, the rates for hire is crazy low if you shop around. I use Hewden for most of my hire and you can get a 1.5t for £130 a week, a 3cx for £310 and a 14t for £600. Annoyingly they just took their prices off their website recently.
  10. I was offered a free trial on Google ads. £50 worth was used in the first few days and resulted in not one job. Marketing is hard to get right in terms of value for money.
  11. Not that I am on 'their side' but I think banks are damned if they do, damned if they don't. I don't want them calling me and offering me stuff but if I want to call them I want to be able to do so 8am-8pm any day of the week. I hardly ever use a branch but if I need to I want one local to me and there to be no queues.
  12. Spotted this monster on ebay (No affiliation to me ). WOOD CHIPPER 24" All Terrain | eBay
  13. Was offer 53p on 500l in London last week.
  14. I had wondered about this and did a bit of research a while back. From what I found the Hiab 055 range was pretty good. 7-11 metres depending on unit, weights in 700-900kg plus stabilisers. At 7 metres it lifts around 600kg. My thought was if you combined this with a defender 110 or perhaps the new ranger in single cab (pulls 3500kg) with a stripped down body. Run the crane off a petrol unit in the back. You would have a very versatile bit of kit. That's as far as I got though!

I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to untie it at the other end...
  16. Maybe you could get an American style receiver so it would be removal for MOT and such?
  17. This is my point exactly. If you know what you are doing then I am sure it is pretty straightforward. As a first timer I'd be a bit apprehensive about putting up a pretty large polytunnel. Especially if I'd spend a few grand buying it.
  18. I was looking at 30ft span 90ft long polytunnels recently and saw these guys - firstpolytunnels. No link to me at all. They have a fitting team and this really appeals. I reckon having someone who really knows would save hours, maybe even days on a big tunnel. No idea on the cost of this though.
  19. Bit a thread revival but I am looking to sell on my Exeter retort if anyone is still in the market. Very reluctant sale as I really enjoyed using it but unfortunately work is pulling us in other directions and its just not getting the use. Its on arbtrader if anyone is interested or feel free to pm me.
  20. I think its drops to £200k from 1st Jan 2016.
  21. I don't think it is possible to increase the value of your business if you are going to stay small. If you try and sell it on really it will be the value of medium/long term contracts that you have. Equipment depreciates and you are not guaranteed to be able to sell it on for anywhere near what you want. If you buy land as business then still pay tax on the profit. There is the possibility of diversifying into other business(es) but you are not 'staying small' as per the question. The best thing I think you can do as a small business (excuse the obvious) is earn and take home as much as possible. Profit of £60k as a LTD you can take £46k after tax. If you are doing better than that then bring you wife in as a director as well and take home another £46k. Then pay off your mortgage as quick as you can. If you are consistently making more than £120k a year profit then go see an accountant and financial adviser.
  22. This is quite a thread and I maybe repeating someone else but for me kiln drying offers the advantage of space. I operate in London where I do not have the benefit of a lot of area to have wood air drying. The kiln allows me to have 36 cubes of split wood waiting to go in, 12 cubes drying for a week which then generally sell out in the following days. I appreciate this doesn't result in a a huge turnover of product but without the kiln I'd have logs to dispose of instead of something to sell. There is also the key eco advantage of keeping a small loop, often less than 5 miles from tree to kiln to customers. The future of firewood? I don't think so. Regrettably I think the future of firewood in the UK will be imported material from eastern Europe/Baltics.

Are they standard leaf springs? I think there are aftermarket HD versions with an extra leaf. You can't legallycarry any more weight but if your tow bar isn't scraping a groove into the tarmac as you drive you are less likely to get a pull.
