  1. True but even a small firm will hit the threshold in no time. £83k turnover really isn't much. I would have thought a two man team would be charging atleast £450 a day anywhere in the country. Unless it's all cash of course, which if that your route then I doubt VAT separation is going to be a concern of yours!

I suppose everyones different but I registered very early on because it made sense for equipment purchases, leases, fuel costs, etc. I also feel VAT registration gives customers more confidence in you as they can look you up on a govt system. Compared to the guys who just supply a mobile number only you are leaps and bounds ahead. For me displaying LTD business name, registration, address, phone and VAT number alleviates concerns of you being some cowboy, flytip it in an alley outfit.
  3. It's called VAT seperation and is illegal if you are dividing a business supplying the same product or service under different names primarily for the purpose of avoiding VAT. Happens in most trades I expect though but very easy for them to see, trace and fine/prosecute for. Perfectly legal if you deliver different services but if it's all arboriculture, delivered by the same workers, using the same equipment, wearing the same gear, etc, etc you are 100% illegal. If you use yourself and you tipper for waste disposal you could call it a different business, if you used your tractor for contract meadow work and so on. You have to accept VAT is part of business growth. Everyone bar one man bands will hit the threshold in a year. It's only £332 turnover a day based 250 days a year.
  4. They won't cover pricing in a training course. I assume what he meant was you know roughly what square metres you can cover in a set time. Just get out there and see how you go. If you under price a few days it won't bankrupt you. You have to get it wrong a few times before you get it right.

  6. Tracked chippers are great and I am always impressed on what they can get through, until they don't! Then you have a one ton dead weight. All part of the fun I guess.
  7. Knotweed is a different business to regular spraying in my opinion. Spending a day spraying it might make minimal difference. You need a proper treatment program. Stem injection is vastly more effective but it's it labour intensive and really horrible work. A hundred square metres could take you all day stem injecting because of conditions and the whole time you are crawling about in scrub. As I mentioned earlier, work out your own price and give it a go. Charge £250 a job (day) including chemical and assume you can cover 1000 square metres in a day. You'll work it out in a few jobs whether you can go up or down from there.

    Don't think I ever experienced it using 4 litres an hour but after 6 hours of full revs, fairly continously feeding you'd be running on fumes (so about 3 litres an hour). Over a year of daily use you'd be looking at about 4500 litres. Obviously a larger diesel machine will use more fuel but obviously unleaded is more than double red currently.
  10. Another vote for otterbox. I have had an otterbox defender on my Samsung for two years and underneath the phones like new. Drops, scrapes, occasional splash - nothing has caused any damage.
  11. Quote each job separately. Work out how long you'd expect it to take and what you are looking to make from it. Then learn quote to quote. After ten jobs you'll have a much better idea and can hone your pricing. A price per sqm is OK for larger tenders etc but I'd avoid until that point. 1000sqm contiguous on amenity grassland with good access compared to 1000sqm of knotweed spread along a sloping river bank.... No two jobs are the same.

    I used one for a while. Really easy to tow and handle manually. Found blades changes a bit of a faff, all just a bit cramped but might just be me. Performed well. You have to do your sums on fuel consumption though. I found on a busy day we'd use about 15 litres of unleaded. Do this 5 days a week, most of the year and your fuel bill gets a little scary. A diesel 150 might see you £1500 a year better off, which could be the extra finance on the machine.
  13. Ebay is a very different to an actual plant auction and I'm tempted to keep away as it's full of shisters. Have a look at the Hewden auctions. Lots of kit available and bargains can be had. Sub 1000kg are much rarer though. Try some of the big hire firms and just tell them what you are looking for. They might have stuff coming up and if you're patient you could get a good deal. I did this with my mini digger. I'd look at some 1.5 tonners with expanding tracks. Narrow to get through the gate but more stable once you are in.

  17. I like l200's. I have a mk4 and mk5. My preference is simplicity on pickups. Manual windows, no aircon, radio, manual locks.

  19. RSL have an 'opposing rake' to be used in combination with their landscaping rake. If you welded on a mesh panel on each you could grab and handle some pretty fine stuff.
  20. It can happen if you a felling a tree and you've got the weighting/lean wrong (goes 3 o clock instead of the 12 you wanted) and catch the tip on the way down. Seen it happen a few times when working in really tangle overgrown areas.
  21. Depends a bit on where it is but if it was anywhere near me I'd sell it and never have to work again. As the op has noted you never know what's round the corner, win or lose, so sometimes it's best to cash in your chips.

  23. The problem there is, if you work for beer you run the risk of it becoming popular and you'll sh*tfaced every visit!
  24. Bottlenecks rarely disappear, they just move up a step! Bigger chipper > 2nd groundie, 2nd groundie > 7.5tonner, even bigger chipper > 18tonner.
  25. Could you weld up two rsj/universal beams to act as a ramp for it? The tracks would fit nicely between the channels making it hard to track off. Taper it at one end so you drive straight on, rising to 50cm over 2 metres or so? You could then slide under it pretty easily.
