  1. do splices come under any sort of regulation if ive done them myself? as learning to do so may help me in the future. Ill have a look at how to splic that tennex, and see how i feel about it i can tie a timberhitch, ive done some basic stuff but most of the system was set up by someone else. Why is money so expensive.
  2. a knut is an odd hitch, it will only work on certain combinations of friction cord and rope, a good combination is ocean polyester and 12mm yale XTC+, very grippy. But it doesnt work well with pulleys. I attach one loose on a non load beearing carabiner to help when tending, but thats the only need for a pulley, it doesnt even need one anyway. ive got a 10m scorch line with a silverbull hip bag, ive used a VT and a distel and find the distel less temperamental, a 0.65m OP e2e sling is the perfect length, bites straight away and takes up little room
  3. is the tenex the 3 strand rope? How much is it to learn to splice? id love to learn how, and how would i then go about being a CE certified splicer? as then my splices would be LOLER passable correct?
  4. ive heard them be called that so thats how i know them, but i never knew the difference, but then again i never really paid attention to look. What is the need in a whoopie if there is a split tail? surely because no matter how big the eye is its not going to make much difference? unless you can hook it round a stub on a branch and need to extend it? i think id go with the liros 12mm and the 16mm split tail, seems a good few sizes up i think! using the cheaper rope knocks about 15 quid off the cost, need all the money i can get really. especially with a lack of work. There is always my student loan! Thanks rupe, some good helping there!
  5. What would be the best way to anchor at the top, another split tail like i have? and ive never been able to work out the difference with whoopie and loopie slings, can you enlighten me?
  6. some of this? HB94 - Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm i could go for a heavyweight pulley, i was thinking the lightweight one would suffice, but this stuff is worth investing in! probably one of these if id go for one HB91DA - Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley ive got a budget of probably stretching to £250 with everything so far: HB91NA - Yale Split Tail 16mm x 4m £38.95 ex VAT Quantity HB20AB - ISC Figure of 8 Horned Descender £23.95 ex VAT Quantity HB14DB - DMM 12mm Kwiklock Steel Karabiner £17.00 ex VAT Quantity HB94 - Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm £92.25 ex VAT Quantity [/url] HB91DA - Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley £67.00 ex VAT Quantity Total ex VAT £239.15
  7. So, over the summer im aiming to go through my CS39, 40 if the budget allows and 41, and if i manage to, ill be looking to buy some rigging kit, can anybody recommend a basic kit? Currently ive been going through honeybros and got this list: HB91NA - Yale Split Tail 16mm x 4m HB94C - Liros Rigging Rope - 12mm HB20AB - ISC Figure of 8 Horned Descender HB91LA - Lightweight Lowering Pulley 45kN HB14DB - DMM 12mm Kwiklock Steel Karabiner im looking for a good balance of quality but fairly cheap. What would you guys think?
  8. there is a local park near me with some sycamores ranging from 10-15m, ive climbed pretty much all of them, get some hassle from kids but i just tell them to go away if they start to mess with my kit. Have haad a few people stop and have a little chat about climbing and stuff, its good sometimes, but on your own is a bit of a no no. i dont go out anymore, ive got nobody in my local area to climb with on a weekend really.
  9. and you wonder why we have big insurance premiums?
  10. I've already seen a few lambs. As well as daffodils popping up and snowdrops too. Looking forward to more cracking weather. Makes some great working!
  11. they are very good quality products! great for this type of work. I gave an old one to my girlfriend and i sat on it, dont know how, but the screen was all cracked, the invisibleshield held all the glass in and she continued to use it for about 8 months!
  12. I use a zagg invisibleshield on mine and have done on my other 4 previous iPhones. I have one on cameras and on my iPod too. They are £15 for an iPhone kit. Don't add any bulk at all, and are 100% scratchproof. Worth the investment and come with a lifetime warranty. The screen cover kept travelling up and folding over. I'm onto my 7th front cover. Each one was replaced under warranty!
  13. Yeah I know. The pulling line was more there for a sideways pull if anything. And watching the video again it does seem the better idea now. It was all weighted to come down in that direction. The limb on the opposite side to me was weighting it towards another tree. The line was there to pull against it. We were very pushed for time that day as I had another 3 pops to crown lift so wanted to take as big a piece out as possible. I wanted tofell it but it would either go into a tennis court fence, a wooden fence on an alleyway, or roll off it's neighbour and hit the tennis court fence! Thanks for the tips guys. Will be taking them all in
  14. make sure they are properly sanded. think of the splinters!
  15. ah, thankyou rupe. Now i know for future
  16. This is on a job i was at a few weeks ago, got a spare groundie to video this for me, it went perfect <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3Fd_B_P82M&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3Fd_B_P82M&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> i dont think its worked, how do you get these to work so i can post in the future? Thanks
  17. i think it can border on trespassing if doing it without permission, but im sure if a couple of you go to the ranger and ask then usually they should be ok, but it differs with places really. Just dont go on your own.
  18. thats just showing off, ive been shown one of those systems on a demo day JD did a few years ago when they brought out the 6020, 7020 and 8020 series, i think i was 13 and i was sat in the captains seat of an 8520 with half tracks, starfire and a 6 furrow plough, what a set up that was weve mainly done turf work, we have a 6330 on contract hire from FG Rowlands and we have a 2.6m vertidrain on the back, works great, shame it can only run a 40k box. a 50 mile trip to lancaster took 3 hours
  19. I've had every generation so far. The 3gs is so much quicker and the camera is as good as you expect. If your gonna get any game, get angry birds! I've heard the rumour about the new one. I believe it could be june or July. Apple always seem to do it around then. I would buy a sturdy case with some holes in it, tie a piece of old throwline to it and clip it to my harness so pictures can be taken when up the tree. It's always good to post stuff on facebook with a picture looking out over an area!
  20. That's a very good addition and that will help me in looking at things from a different angle. I'm trying to look around the subject and not just at it. I think that's some of the beat information I could have. I think it will end up being a very thorough report methinks! How on earth can I fit all this into 1000 words! Thanks a lot Paul. Very helpful.
  21. As you all know, there are many different issues in and around our industry, and lucky me, im doing a report and a presentation on a chosen subject. Im not looking for the answers here, im pretty certain which topic i am choosing. here is a copy of the scenario I have been given: You work for a specialist arboricultural consultancy. There has been a great deal of discussion raised over a particular aspect of Health and Safety legislation that the consultancy regularly deals with. You are considered to be the foremost expert in the consultancy regarding that particular matter. You have been asked directly by your CEO, to produce a report that reflects on the controversial issue, and to produce a presentation that will be used to inform your work colleagues about this Health and Safety requirement. The presentation should be written from the point of view of how it will affect you personally. From this, i have decided that i will look into the training of employees and how the improper training has an impact on the immediate people, such as an improperly trained employee felling a tree and it damaging property, hurting a colleague or hurting/maiming themselves, and then either party trying to claim compensation. Its an issue which extends quite deeply into the role of training and CPD within the industry. After looking therough the AFAG guides section of the HSE website, i have found some references i can use and it also gives me some case studies. I am looking for the views of other people in the industry, as my view is not very experienced and seeking the views and opinions of people who do have their own businesses and have probably dealt with situations similar to this. like i said, im not going to copy and paste your views straight into my report, im looking for more information which would help me to achieve the higher marks by considering other options and also by looking around the issue at problem solving and also accident prevention. Thanks, any comments which help on this matter are greatly appreciated, and i will be referencing these posts in the assignment whereever possible!
  22. Im sure the object is to not cut through it in the first place?!
  23. i use the oregon version of the on the bar one, i find it ok, but the chain lifts to the side as you sharpen, and makes it awkward to get a good proper sharpen on it, you can turn the files easily, and i find it quicker than other ways. It doesnt give as accurate a sharpen as the bench mounted 240v grinder though. But that stihl bench mounted one is in the middle and looks fancy. My only squabble about it is that it needs to hold the chain still for it to sharpen well and give a good edge on it, the only ways i can do that is by tightening the side screws up to pin the chain up each time i do a cutter which would take ages or tighten the chain up real tight to pull it into the bar and make it stiffer.
  24. can you find out a price for a fan at all? if anything that is the piece i need most, along with the cover.
  25. Pn 23736a hand sharpener 39497 small screw 38654 big screw 38651 small screw opposite side Bench grinder Pn 106540 G003 fan cover Price for motor g002 no part no. For fan itself if you can make sense of that. That's what I noted down in my phone when looking through. There were no separate parts for any of the screws on the motor or for the fan itself. I would assume they come with the motor? If at all possible can you get a quote for the motor? Thanks
