  1. You are excused It's to treat a deviated septum. Which is the middle bit on your nose. I had a sinus infection going on for a while and the op was to clear that out and they noticed my septum was bent too. So they cut a slice out of that to even it out with the other. It's a pretty simple surgery. I should be all recovered in 7-10 days. But right now I feel absolutely fine. Been given painkillers to take as and when needed. It feels like I have a blocked nose more than anything.
  2. I've been off here for the past two days. On Tuesday I had my long awaited septoplasty operation. Got into the hospital at 11.15 got put under at 3.30! Was glad to have my own room in the hospital anyway. A newly built one too so everything was clean and comfy. Came out from the anaesthetic around 5.15pm and took an hour before I could think properly as I was drifting off every few minutes! I've been told to take two weeks off and to take it easy after that. The surgeon asked me what I do for work and I said I'm a surgeon too. But for trees! He didn't know what one is so I managed to teach him something! Got the lovely gf looking after me as both parents are overseas till at least next week! Had the packings removed from my nose yesterday. If anyone has had them before you know the feeling of having them removed. Imagine a pillow stuffed up your nose and when it's pulled out imagine someone tugging at your eyes and your brain! If you want to see An example look on youtube! That's been the worst part so far. Other than that I've had no other issues. Slept ok both nights so far. Looking forward to a nice two weeks off though! I've attached a pic I took about an hour after I came out from the anaesthetic. Was half conscious at the time!
  3. I have the stein lid with peltor defenders and a mesh visor. Prefer the mesh to the solid one any day. Could never get used to them. I have used both the petzl and stein. Although I've used the petzl hardly as much. I prefer the stein as it's really comfy
  4. i want some of those white stretch airs that the twig has! they look super cool!
  5. ill look into that one, with my two weeks off coming up in the next few days ill have plenty of time to do looking up, feeling sorry for myself and looking daft covered in bandages. IT definately seems like a possibility, the client he had been watching a woodpecker make his way into the tree over the previous weeks and said he has gone since, i said there could be a chance for bats in there now then. Surely a little extra outlay for this job would save a lot of legal headache in time to come?
  6. I'm gutted I missed this. Will hopefully make next years. Will meet up with a few of you at the apf! I have to witness mr bolams dancing skills!
  7. I did mention the possibility of wildlife including bats which would find a home in such holes. The client didn't believe it but said there were bats in the area and could see them pottering round at night. I would do a severe drop crotch on the limb, leaving the hole and any potential critters well alone. Would a survey climb be a good idea to check it over? Go up with a torch and a camera and take a good peek around? They said they would get other quotes. But I said see if they notice what I notice. I'll push for this work as I think it would be a good management process to go through. Do you mean by this to reduce the weight over two years?
  8. Another comment passed by the client was that it creaks in the wind, but that could be any reason, i would imagine it comes fom the hazard beam, but trees have flexibility so it oculd be from the whole thing. Thanks again for you comments hama. I can understand what you mean, with all the load on the tree and its still standing, taking it off will surely make it easier to cope with the load.
  9. Ive just had a thought, along a dual carrigeway near me there were some willows that had been felled and left at stumps from 1-2ft high, all of them have lots of whippy growths and are almost as big again now. Would a a prune back to major limbs be a good option? leaving a few climber supports for later work? I think a management plan would be a good option here. I was thinking removal of the whole hazard beam and then almost a complete removal of foliage and it should see it right?
  10. THanks for that hama, great bit of advice there. I was thinking it must be doing alright despite the obvious problems, would i need to get the tree surveyed because of the hole on the hazard beam? Would it be a possibility to completly remove the whole limb, therefore reducing lever arm and removing a hazard?
  11. I was thinking that too, i was thinking about a seriously hard prune back, but then i could just fell it too. THey are after the long term solution, but a serious pruning would be better for myself in the long run.
  12. Here is a fantasitc weeping willow, i was called out to take a look and give quotes for a heavy prune and to remove, so the customer had some options. There is one pesky branch that decided to interfere with some nearby phone lines, and that was the main reason for the phonecall. Hoever, when taking a good look at the tree, there is evidence of previous pruning which appears to have been done half right and half wrong, some pruning wounds are ok but there are other stubs that have been left and also some that have decayed. There is an old failure wound on the tension side of the stem, and its fairly huge, it has ferns growing out of it which could indicate decay inside the tree. And on the reverse of the stem to this wound, there is a recess in the stem, which seems to show there is little left in that area regarding wood thickness. I also noticed a split in one of the main limbs, the one which goes out towards the phone line. Which is my main concern as could this tree be past its best and need to come out? I recommended that it was to come out as i couldnt guarantee that it would be completely structurally sound. In the pictures that show a close up of the bark, could this be any evidence of fibre buckling or any problems? i know salix sp have fissured bark into maturity but this 'crack' seems to be out of the ordinary. Further up the split branch, there is a hole, apparently there was a woodpecker who liked to go in there, could that be a factor in the partial failure? Need advice please!
  13. I heard ryobi are closing up on stihl!
  14. Thanks. A place as good as arbtalk I'm bound to. I think I may have! It's a simple operation. Clear an infection from my left sinus and then straighten out my septum. Pretty much a nose job on the NHS!
  15. for the amount of work done and whats left i dont have the speed yet, i need a different situation to get my skills back up. I have an operation on tuesday in hospital so the work has to be done in a day, id happily ground for whoever comes in. BTW the location is 5 minutes from my house in st helens merseyside.
  16. Hi guys looking for a good climber for next monday, ive had two days climbing on this job but ive figured im a bit too rusty to give it a third to get it done, i have simple rigging gear and a vehicle to take waste away with so all i need is a climber with their gear and good reduction skills. still bring you gear though. Thanks PM me or phone/text 07841128366 for details

  18. well you shouldnt need to pay them, as they dont have an address! The last time i had contact with aliens, i woke up with evidence of being probed! hahaha
  19. 7.30 am, alarm goes off, play on phone and snooze till 8, get up, collect gear together, get to clients house for 9, finish there by 12, look at her sisters house and get promised a good amount of work. Dropped brash off at greenwaste site, came home got cleaned up went to manchester city centre shopping with the other half and her sis. i got a £1 belt from primark, they spent £80 between them. Got home, made some leaflets, went out posting those till it was dark, went to tesco got tomorrows lunch, found this thread, posted!
  20. The rope I spliced on my harness is double braid and they are all class 1 splices on those. I found them nice to start out with. I bought a length of double esterlon 14mm and found that nice and easy to splice as it had loads of room. High scale sent me some Marlowe which I've found nice too. Might try some poison ivy next then and make myself a lanyard. Need a sailmakers palm and needle to lockstitch my splices now. Hello, my names rob, and I'm a spliceaholic! Haha
  21. What type of splice is done on ropes like tachyon blaze and poison ivy? They look good! Makes me want to keep learning! I bought a couple of wire fids from treeworker yesterday. A normal one and an extra long one. And a crotchet hook. I can't wait till I get those!
  22. josh that is a sexy truck! my dad has a d40 in red. they are nice trucks, and fast when you put a Tune-It chip in them and turn it up! @others: ill have a go at what its like with the canopy over it, you may actually be right.
  23. nice job on that one! looks messy. Were you trying to do a 10% limb reduction? Im guessing some of the phrases used at the time of the accident were 'oh bother,' 'oh well that wasnt a good idea' and 'whoopsie daisy!'
  24. I think that pretty much sums it up!
