  1. Doh, clicked the wrong thing!
  2. It's gotta be worth getting involved...
  3. My boss has a simliar size field maple on the bank or a stream in his field, will try to get a pic.
  4. It'd bug me but so long as they pay for it I'd leave them be. As soon as it creeps out of their space or gets in your way then's the time to put your foot down.
  5. recon i'll be there if i have time! would be good to meet some fellow arb talkers...
  6. It's lively, but best avoided if your eyes are easily offended....
  7. I'm using it with the hitch climber system but I recon any pulley system would work fine.
  8. I was shown it a couple of weeks ago and so far it seems to be spot on!
  9. Had a look at the APF and I really am very impressed! Will be buying one as soon as I can justify it, will just have to nag my boss for now... From what I'd seen online it looked possibly a bit bulky to be practicle but It was just spot on in reality. Good product. Matt
  10. Bought some poles to go with my big shot! Really enjoyed the show, just wish I'd had more time to explore properly.
  11. I did a job clearing branches by a fishing pool for a local club last week and they seemed to think me making sure I was doing proper pruning cuts rather than just cutting a set amount off was a waste of time. Even when i tried to explain about the regrowth from pollard cuts they just seemed to want the quick fix. i did my best to please them and for the health of the trees though
  12. Currently CS38 seems a bit too lax for my liking. Perhaps a way around the situation would be to have an assessment for climbing at the end of the course to show you are safe, can look after yourself and would alow you to practice. Then once you feel ready, be it in a weeks time or a year, you book onto a second assessment for the rescue part of the certificate. This could be more thorough and perhaps timed to show real competance. Obviously this would require some working out, but is there something I've missed?
  13. A street tree in sight of my bedroom window has been pollarded in the last week, leaving gaff marks all over it and several untidied step cuts! Well done to the LA/contractor concerned, what an advert for the industry conveniently placed outside of a school gate.
  14. My boss has an RB44. 4x4, twin rear wheels (civillian version only), hydraulic winch. We've just put a completely rust free truck cab on it, new tool locker and chip box. Its a good machine but not worth what he's spent on it to be honest, particularly as it doesnt get used very much...never mind
  15. Thanks for replying Rupe. This is what I'd have thought but wasn't sure if there was some thinking to the contrary. Matt
  16. My first day on the job was mostly spent putting sopping wet conifer through a gravity fed chipper. I also got a good bit of practice at unclogging the chipper!
  17. This is going to sounds like I'm questioning what you've said but I'm just trying to learn so please bare with me. Would I be right in thinking that you reduced the trees to prolong their life in that setting, rather than purely for safety reasons? Were there other motivations in terms of the trees current state of health that suggested a reduction was the best thing to do? Does reducing trees of this size and age as a general rule, improve their safety in this sort of environment (footpaths and picknick area's) and if so, why? Thanks in advance. Matt
  18. Cheers for the suggestions guys, both useful and entertaining:thumbup:
  19. I knew I should have worded my question better... Any little useful tools you wouldnt immediately think of?
  20. I'm gradually getting my tools together and was interested in what you all think of as the things you take to any job regardless?
  21. Thanks for the offer, I may well take you up on it! Will pm you when I've had a chance to come up with a bit of a plan as i've no idea when I'm planning on coming and going. Matt
  22. How easy is it to get to from tonbridge train station? I've not got anyone to travel down with so was thinking of public transport. Is it feasable?
  23. Wish I'd had my camera today. My office was situated by a boat house along side rudyard lake (of topgear boating fame). Sat and had lunch on the jetty:thumbup:
