  1. Hi Tony I was hoping you could quantify the "boundary of phenolic substances" it is true, trees do use phenolic deposits, (with tyloses for example to block xylem vessels, to make lignin compounds, some are excreted by leaves and by roots into the soil) Where is this "boundary"? Willow in particular have a very poor ability to produce tyloses and phenols which is why this species is so readily decayed Also you say fungus is resistant to all things? Ever heard of Fungicide? Balls to the happy pills, just send me some of what you're on! Maybe then I might be able to see what the King is wearing! Keep up the good work Tone, I do like to see your photos Jonny
  2. Oh dear, evidently you are just as confused as me. Perhaps it would be better if you let Tony explain as he's the one that has the knowledge to quantify this statement. I am greatful however that you took the time to try and enlighten me,thank yo.
  3. Please could you be a little bit more specific on this as I don't quite understand, or maybe I'm just reading it wrongly.
  4. Thats radial engine Stubby, rotary engines had the cramk fixed to the fus and the whole engine rotated with the prop, this method was superceded by the radial just after WW1. Your spot on with the seccond pic, its a 172.
  5. Damn, only just seen the Salcombe bit now. Thats disgusting behaviour, sadly a sign of the times, and leaving the timber in heavy pices is no deterrent either because these cretins arrive end of play with their £89 screwfix chainsaws and cut the stuff up into manageable bits. And yes, the majority of these theiving scumbags are so called "respectable' types!
  6. And you never will Shillo, because it isn't Armillaria, its K.deusta and its the most beautiful colonisation pattern I have ever seen, probably because most people leave the tree standing much longer before felling. I would cut some nice even rings off as they would look nice waxed up and hanging on the wall, beautiful pattern.
  7. Hi Stubby That is exactly why I did not attempt to ID it, because I wasn't sure, I was umming and arring so didn't dare through embarrassment, as the saying goes " its better to be thoight of as a half-wit than open ones mouth and remove the doudt.. It was far easier to eliminate candidates, like Oak and erm, Hornbeam
  8. A client once told me that he Usesed Google to search for information about his trees and is soon directed to......Arbtalk. Its a forum where the members are, Tree Surgeons, "arbs", Contractors etc that Can not even perform the fundamental task for anyone involved with trees, Identification! Granted, not an easy tree to ID, I was also struggling and undecided to begin with, but Hornbeam? Even a decent Groundie should have been able to glance sideways at those initial pictures and know immediately that this tree could never be HORNBEAM. The OP then posed a pic of the whole tree and the Horbeam ID"s continue, however one guy was "not convinced" but he was convinced that it was Not A. Davidii but failed to see the correct arrangement of the leaves! The thread then degenerates further because fools have been exposed, but the fools now want to pass the buck and blame the "critics" for spoiling their guessing game and frightening them into not posting any more "outer space" suggestions? A post has been removed for being "usual nonsense", disappointingly I didn't get the chance to read it, how bad it must have beet to get pulled when all that misinformation is allowed to remain??? Cleary, we are living in the age of the "Google Wit", Google allows these self proclaimed "Arbs" et al the ability to quote the specific gravity of a jar of jam, but they lack the ability to get the lid off. Jonny
  9. As a consultant, I would have to agree with Tony Sorensen that the best way forward with this is to seek the advice of a profesional arboriculturalist.
  10. MEWP's, cranes, tractors, is the bloody tree still there?
  11. Congratulations to both you and Mrs Bourne and a happy and prosperous life little Joshua.
  12. Many happy returns Jon, go easy on the old cizer later Jonny
  13. This has to be the most logical way forward with this and would prevent any future complications/upset
  14. I couldn't agree more. Horatio You have to decide what outcome you would like to see from all this? Would you be happy if Cupid continued to be a stunt for the rest of your/his occupancy? Clearly he has some sensitive issues, so nothing to be gained from making him any worse, the diesel engine idling for ten minutes at 04.30 would have had me out of bed and down onto the drive wanting to dish out some hidings, where as others would just seethe under the duvet hating you, afterwards, everything you do just adds weight to the camels back. Experience dictates that the longer you leave this situation unatended the less chance of a favouable outcome, talk to him, tell him that you realise how unwelcome clattering diesels are at 04.30 and you have now done the sensible thing and bought a scraper and are going to man-up to a cold cab. General maintenance to your equipment and running them up afterwards will continue, but explain how necessasary this is and that you are perfectly within your right to do it Personaly, I would refrain from cutting logs up on a shared driveway, transfer operations to the back garden or better still where you removed them, you have to offer some concessions to receive any. As for seeking legal advice, why? What you are doing is no different to what thousands of others do throughout the UK, there is no law preventing you from keeping chainsaws, small amounts of petrol (in propper containers), strimmers etc safely locked in your garage and would it be unreasonable to maintain a motorcycle in your garage and run it up after? What would be the difference? Let cupid waste his money and keep yours in your pocket! We all get things wrong so there is no harm in appologising when we realise our mistakes.
  15. Hi Jose Its a shame that so soon after such a tragedy issues like this emerge. It is cleat that what your sister in law is asking for is unjustified, yes, we all have to live but we also have to be realistic, nothing comes for nothing. To preserve future relationships between everyone concerned, make an inventory of the whole joint assets (ie, saws, grinder, chipper, vehicles etc) between you and your late Bro and get it valued, then either offer her half the value, or half the kit? Make a clean break now just as you would have done if your Bro had still been arround and wanted a split. Whatever happens I hope everthing works out in the best possible way. Best wishes Jonny
  16. Aldi were selling biting insect repellant the year before last @ £1 a bottle, I bought 20 quids worth and it contains "Deet", it works but you have to spray everything including your clothing! They can detect movement, vibration and scent so you can not hide from them! I would not advise anyone to just "get on with it", that dosen't achieve anything, these little blighters spend their lives sucking blood from animals arses including Rats, hence the nasty reactions reported by some people, its not the individual that has a particular allergy to the fly, more of what the fly had its probocis inserted in before it inserted it into you. Jonny
  17. Its an exudate flowing over rough bark
  18. I am getting the feeling that there may be a wind up element involved in this thread. Nobody is that slow.
  19. JonnyVine

    Whoa lol

All sounds about as much use as a whistle on a plough to me, I did have to use a soft Ethiopian lizard cut once though.
  20. Be careful posting pics like that, you'll have the retaining brigade down your neck
