They only get larger , above there optimum tree height of the given species , when we interrupt there natural growth habit, by pruning, topping or pollarding, other causes of abnormal growth habit could be competition from buildings , unusual/artificial light or trees located close by. Topography can all so play a part. Soil type will also play a part. Some species tolerate pruning better than others , Lime must be one of the worst, easy access for Pathegons , and large amounts of epicormic shoots from the pruning wounds.

Now if thats intended for me, the original post was up for all to comment on, often members sit back and wait a while to gauge there replies according to the flavor of opinion, not me, I tell it as I see it, and I try not to offend. I have also wounded a lot of trees myself over the years, pruning wounds do after all provide the ideal entry point for Pathogens .

  4. Depends on the type of light bulb and if you need elevated access, could be a 3 man job, Climber, some one who is Arial Rescue Trained , and some one to pass the bulb. Don't forget the Risk Assessment .

  7. I'm guessing then that the trees are Local Authority owned or it was instructions from Highways then ?

I'm really surprised you got permission from the TO , as the trees are mature and really about as big as they were going to get, given the regrowth that will occur, the same issues will be there again in only a very shot time only worse . 3 years time they will have a really dense outer canopy, has your client got too much money? or is he just one of those people who automatically believes that all trees will just keep on growing and pruning is the only way of control, I'd say that they were about as large as they were going to get, and that they have now just been stimulated into another growth spurt and unnecessarily wounded. Just my opinion , no offence intended and pruning is after all wounding.

Thanks for that, but regardless of which clutches are fitted it should make no difference on tension, belt type yes I see your point, mine engine to spindle is 3 v belts, spindle to cutter wheel is 1 wide grooved belt, the manual says nothing regarding tension only how to adjust, my worry is not to over tighten so as to damage the engine crank, its all been really well maintained with low hrs this is going to be its first adjustment on belts. Thanks for looking into this any help is a big help.

OK we have to change the clients mind set, the vast majority now keep all cord wood, so offer a splitting service, and its becoming very easy to leave wood chip on site, just promote its benefits as a weed suppressant or soil conditioner , the majority of my clients are now really into keeping everything on site , real Eco Warriors and big into gardening. So a small well tested and trusted truck would do, and these ones really hold there value or if you did need to sell quickly you would have no trouble moving them on. Great crew is every thing with out a top boy, boys or girls on site you have nothing, The thinking at 50 tools down and watch In todays economic climate its just not sustainable as a retirement plan.

  13. Thanks for that, you can't really go wrong on that set up, its only when you try to expand that things can go odd. In my eyes thats the standard fool proof set up. and thats ideally the mk 3 hilux. I think thats the one, the one before the turbo was put on which still had a traditional front axle and naturally aspired engine.

  15. Thats good, now on the credit thing the way to improve your history , it sounds mad, but its to try and get a credit card and pay it off in full every month, also a small loan, say £500 , even if you don't need it and then just pay it off early. It won't take long to put things right.

In that case, its a Landy or a hilux 3to4 k and a good entec, all paid for , find the best number 2 you can and pay him as much as you can and look after him, with you knowledge and interpersonal skills you will be fine, stay small , stay under the VAT, don't be tempted to drop your prices if times go quite, there is also very little money to be made on the big jobs at the moment , be chabby chic as it were and sell your self to those who appreciated quality and an in depth knowledge of trees and ecology .

Good luck Tony, sorry you had such bad luck first time , regarding a truck yes people will say avoid new but there are benefits like you know its something that will go against your tax as offset,straight away, you will have reliability and it could free up funds to invest in a chipper, but if possible try and avoid HP, get a small business loan on a good rate instead and try and get free banking, Santender were doing a good deal.

Hi all, can anyone tell me what tension the belts should be on a Predator 28, thats the 3 belts from the engine to the spindle and the wide belt from the spindle to the cutting head, also I have very slight play showing on the 2 inside bearings on that spindle when you put pressure against the arm/wheel from side to side, it is very slight, what are the bearings wear limits, and costs to replace and is it aswell to just replace all 4 if its got to be stripped.
  19. OMG mine works out about £180, its your hot water thats nocking it up, we cook and heat water and heat the house on wood. The rest goes on lighting up this computer screen to type rubbish, thats when its not shutting down.
  20. Its probably worth £100 to £150 in scrap, I would think you 'd be looking at around £350 to £500 on ebay, they get bought up and restored and the Restoration ones make good money.
