  1. wait for it... you spiked a tree to be retained!!!!!!!!
  2. Shhh keeps you in business.. let them post away... were still in a credit crunch you know.. you need all the posts you can get before you sell the site to a rich billionaire who wants it as his new toy
  3. Proven wrong, the wonderful guests at said hotel have taken stock of the trees new found form and the conclusions are durdurdurdurdurrrr... To be concluded by 18 stoner
  4. Well if the genral public have been reading in the national press about all the chestnut trees in decline and how they can shed branches then it MAY be the case that the safeness they feel through the low likelihood of branch failure as a result of a reduction of canopy cover will appease the guests anguish at something that they are highly likely to not even recognise. Whos going to latch onto a 'reduction of canopy cover' statement and berate it. should have not mentioned it, its more fun to see people over react and picture them screaming at their computer screen
  5. I see a guidance note looming for the Arborists Working Group... How to deal with customers to ensure that you are compliant with BS3998 and that a satisfactory compromise has been sought. 3998 Qs and As for quoting. Giving advice and guidance for the appropriate questions to ask, the manner in which we respond to a clients wishes, and how to educate them in laymans terms to enable an educated decision to be reached by the tree owner and its management. Prudent and professional tree advice... ''its the future, ive tasted it paddy!!!!!'' Pad at the ready
  6. :biggri:biggrin: If as a guvvie you mean the term used to describe work carried out by people that maybe work for other people, but do their own work at the weekends, then that comment was made in a purely joking way, and would have been based on a stereo typical jump to conclusions type response and say ' ooooooh thats rough isnt it lads, phwoar you wouldnt want to put your name to that would you lads,' However, would then have proceeded to explain that although first impressions may be that the tree is not inkeeping with current best practice and modern thinking of arboricultural practices as read and learnt about at colleges and on web based forums, one should really not form a conclusion until sufficient facts have been sought. Upon which, an opinion; that everyone is entitled to, maybe given if so requested by a person you are conversing with. So, i do not think its been done as a 'guvvie' I mock a common workplace conversation that is held in most work vans up and down the country when somethng that could be deemed as questionable is seen.
  7. i knew that was the reason behind you founding arbtalk.. you havent got a good tree job in you have Mr Bullman... The work was all yours... Although if this is not the case then said work is clearly as per the specification and should not be commented on without prior discussion and clarification of the poignant facts and without considered response from a legal representative
  8. If I could write 50 shades of bray id never look back!! haha thats awful i know but just couldnt resist.
  9. You got a good dig on you then or was it a jab cross combo you caught him with. Public forum by the way!!!!!!!!
  10. Not offended. id wince at it and say i wonder what discussion was held there then for that tree to turn out like that. Then ask a member of the team if they had been doing saturday work after hours, in a purely joking manner aimed and said in a non confrontational way so as to not cause offence.
  11. Is it a car park? Maybe complaints had been made from the after hours dog walking community relating their safety in the winter months whilst carrying out their activities. you should just never judge a tree unless you knew what the tree a, looked like before and b, what the discussion was for the specification to be produced
  12. If the conversation went like this; client,i want it out, arb, well have you considered a heavy reduction of the tree to minimise the extensive ugly appearance that you proclaim from a tree in retrenchment and natural decline, Client, no, arb, well the tree has been around for so many years, why dont we give it one last chance to make something of itself, we'll knock it about a bit and try and cause the tree to regenerate prolifically, as the roots and shoots have a equilibrium balance and they need to rebalance that equilibrium to be in harmony with each other. Client i guess so, but i want it right back to these points. Arb, well that could be detrimental, but i guess that as the tree may die, it will have another ecological use as it sees out it last days in the hands of your discerning guilty hands at such barbaric pruning work that you have requested, (said with a sarcastic smile and a willingness to do the work, as if done as correctly as possible you may lessen the chances of complete failure.) Well then i wouldnt be so offended by it, but more sympathetic to the specifcation of the job. Some very conscientious people work for some not so conscientious people and have no choice but to carry out work that in their opinion is not up to best practice, however they do the work to feed themselves and their children.. as their boss will not get paid unti lthe client; uneducatedly, is happy with how their trees look. LOL. But to be fair it is quite harsh, and maybe even extends beyond old school pruning methods.....
  13. There was a proposal from the AA to me about the possibility of using a card machine company, and with it was a bulk discount type offer for multi purchase or contracts taken up. Similiar in many ways to the 'bulk buy britain' programme that is on the tv lately. If the prices and commisions for set up etc were reasonable, would more people be interested in this type of thing. It would probably have to have a significant take up on it though from arb Co's. I mentionend it in here about 18mths ago but the general feeling was nah!!! Cash or cheque. If enough of you feel that this would be good i can raise the contact up again through the A.A. and see what the deal maybe if we had sufficient numbers. Let me know Jaime
  14. It does look rather good doesnt it.... I am from coventry but unaware of the exact location. Based on the APPARENT FROM PICTURES, blind corner, maybe a few cones around the site and some men at work signs, in hindsight, would have been the desired site layout, but the lads obviously assessed the site and adapted accordingly.. For all we know there could have been a road closure for this job to proceed. But i guess a lesson learnt not to criticise before appropriate questions have been asked and answered. I have seen many of Simons sites layed out throughout coventry and there is always considerable efforts for the safety of the public and staff. i doubt that Simon would have had people using the saw without PPE, as he knows as much as we all do that someone is always looking to catch you out when you put yourself on the parapet of being approved contractors and iso9000.. So doubt he would have posted pictures of it on a public forum. Were it not explainable. There are such things as chainsaw chaps that can be quickly zipped on and taken off, maybe these were the preferred option for said landscape team... If you were able to see the stack of tackle in their yard and vans, a jump to conclusions would have perhaps been less hasty. Looks nice does that, however bemused to not see a beechwood sign on the gate, or has the vicar got a beechwood mouse mat or beechwood door mat at the church door for sundays service???? x.x.x.x:001_tt2:
  15. I was up there saturday and must admit having walked around the site the first hour, returned to my van to re-arrange a few bags etc. There appeared to be a different vibe at apf this year, it didnt seem as warm natured as in the past. Maybe thats a sign of the times or a element of paranoia, but your theft confirms my suspicions. Arbshow and the like is a more close nit crowd.

  17. I was once told that a business with no signs is a sign of no business. If you twist that on its head into terms of theft management no signs identifying the trade, admittedly you can not hide a chipper, but it may reduce awareness of yards etc to these type of people. One thing i have always thought of though would be to remove the chipper chute when travelling back to the yard and have a tarpaulin made similiar to those that go over ifor williams trailers and disguise the chipper when returning to the yard. Ultimately i think that employees in some cases need to be educated about the true costs implications and ease at which theft affects the business and can be carried out. When my old man doesnt come to work with us, everything is taken into the garden, petrol climbing kit, tool box, rakes, ladders, wheel barrows, I leave nothing ever unattended, have even asked customers to keep an eye on kit for ten minutes or so whilst I just do this little bit of cleaning if i forget to do it prior to loading the van. Monitoring the opportunities for theft is relentless and tiresome, but just has to be done. Once bitten twice smitten they say. Do any of the larger companies charge staff an excess for theft which occurs on their shift? Is it legal and feasible to monitor such excessses?

  19. Steve, I uploaded some government documents related to the waste products thread that I started two weeks ago or so, as soon as they were uploaded my computer was advising me to not go into the forum. I have since had the files deleted from my system and recycle centre and a full clean up, and it doesnt do it anymore.. These files may be corrupting your site. Not sure why, what, or how, but just incase you need to delete the thread. Sorry, but i can not remember the title of it. Regards Jaime
  20. 211 you will have to keep the chain ultra sharp, the slightest loss of edge and it rolls over and waits for you to tickle its tummy to get going again
  21. When FR were contacted apparenetly they were quite dismissive, but if i got the right end of the stick, i think its been confirmed, much to all involveds bemusement.... Which doesnt bode well.
  22. An associate has been in touch with F.R. Ref. Phytophora.sp. on conifer in warwickshire.. These are very similiar features... I wouldnt discount it just yet. Contact forest research see what they say.. Symptoms seem to have been perfect for the spread/ occurance of it during spring and early summer
  23. Dear All, It has been brought to the attention of the Arboricultural Association that the government is looking into the possibility of restricting the disposing of 'wood waste' into landfill. The arboricultural industry; under the banner of forestry, has been highlighted as a possible contributor to this kind of waste disposal. There are several issues that are in need of address here, some of which I have tried to highlight below. In order for you to enable your opinions to be represented, you will need to carryout a bit of leg work and read through the attached information yourselves. 1. Having read the proposals do you think that arboriculture needs to represent itself? 2. Do you or your company use landfill for waste, or do you use alternative green waste recycling centres? Consider the occasions when you may do fencing work, or the odd garden clearance job. 3. If there are restrictions imposed on the disposal of wood waste to landfill, will it affect you or your company of employment, in relation to time consumption, cost of alternative measures etc? Also, if you feel that this issue is worthy of defending, do you have suitable experience of waste management for arboricultural arisings that you could help formulate the required industry response. All of my woodchip goes to allotment associations, schools, chicken farmers, farmers for field gates, customer retention, All of my logs are either given away or sold, pending their quality. If you do decide to respond or get involved, could you please leave details relating to the size of your company or quantities of 'wood waste' removal per week or per annum, and also the cost of your current waste disposal methods, and any likely increase as a result of this proposal being implemented. There are deadlines for the response of the end of september 2012. Also, for those that live in the bigger cities, do you have places where you can pay to take green waste for recycling purposes, or is landfill your only option? Within the information you will find the word 'informal markets' I personally, not the AA, have interpreted this to mean allotments etc, these appear to not be under scrutiny.. Please do try to not let this become a rant about waste carriers licenses. If for some this is a major issue, then perhaps as an industry, we can fight the corner of those companies, of which I imagine some will not be members of arbtalk. I can be contacted at [email protected]. If it is found that this is an issue and needs address, then I shall seek to set up a response team. If you wish to be part of that team then please do contact me to register an interest. Kind regards, Jaime Bray P.S. please forgive me for not responding immediately to any posts, I am currently in the middle of revising for the prof dip manamgement day.
