  1. Each to their own but I cant really tell the difference. I find stihl chain soft to file and quick to blunt. Apart from oregon not tried much else. Perhaps I am not as rich as some folk
  2. The new scrap laws have been a total success and achieved exactly what the government set out to do. People with an address and paid tax are now paying even more. Before some would have put the money in their pocket and bought the lads a drink at christmas. Now it goes into your business acct so the vat man gets 20% and the tax man gets 40% of whats left. Legislation through the back door they never set out to reduce metal theft that is still going on exactly as before an they still get the money in their pocket. And yes it feels like a conspiracy to take the money of the working man since 75% of your pay goes to the tax man.
  3. I have never understood the file, grinder chain debate. I used to buy carlton chain loops in 16" for about £3 + vat. My bench grinder discs last forever and sharpen a chain properly in a few minutes. Files are £1 ea and I get a couple of sharpens out of ea file. Cheap chains and bench grinder or expensive files.
  4. A £1000 should be enough to get the ball rolling. Employees are self funding they earn you money.
  5. The tt85 stands fairly high off the ground which is a bit top heavy and steep to load plant. Its big brother the 105 has smaller wheels and takes 2.5 tonne payload and sits lower to the ground. the tt105 weighs around a tonne but well made
  6. I cant see why you need to split the vat out. If someone gives me an invoice and they have a vat no. If the total is inc vat I can just work it back. It used to be that purchases under £100 did not need a full vat receipt. A till slip with vat no was fine but times change. I can see giving domestic customers a quote or invoice showing vat could alert them to a saving if they used a small out fit. But then they would need to charge more to cover the vat they cant reclaim on fuel and kit etc. Swings and roundabouts.
  7. I hired a honda water pump out and it got left in a cellar which flooded. We cleaned the carb. drained the sump and refilled. left it for a couple of days ran it a couple of oil changes and 10 years later still runs like a watch. Dont listen to the next bit but we use any engine oil in stock normally a 15/40 semi synthetic diesel oil. but our log splitter has had everything and not often enough. Starts on the button and run s like a watch and its had 7 years hard work. Never a puff of smoke
  8. The thing that saved our backs the most was a homemade log deck which we could make into a big table. We used to ring 5-10 tonnes of timber then scoop them up with the bobcat bucket. The table had gaps to let the bark and dirt fall through. We then parked the vertical splitter next to it and dragged the rings on with a hookeroon. I would spend 4k on loading shovel and some forks for it. I would pay someone to help you as steve says the job is easier with two especially big rings. If your worried about chainsaw side get them on the splitter while you ring up and load.
  9. I use the lids on our vented bags as well and we have dozens of bags of 6in blanks waiting to be put through the kindlet.
  10. I am so tight I have to get 6 lids out of each bottle. I screw bits of wood to the under side to stop them blowing away
  11. Thats how we do it. Even then you need an air gap or the top ones will go mouldy unless dry before you cover. Rain off air in
  12. They test the out put of stoves by using softwood hardwood will just not give the same instant heat . It all comes down to people too lazy to get the stove set up right and getting up more often to load it.
  13. Get on with the vat registration you can claim back the vat on stuff you bought months ago. If it does not work out its harder to de register but it is possible. I would get some good advice soon.
  14. Problem we have is the hilux single cab carries 750kg add the tipper conversion = lots kgs add the 640kg if bone dry and the two fatties in the cab = at least 150kg = too much
  15. My last mortgage if you borrowed more than 90% you had to pay an £1800 mig payment. Basically an insurance policy that the bank could claim on if you default on your mortgage. 15 years ago I borrowed 200k to buy my mini mansion paid £2000 a month for the last 15 years to pay it off. If you were a premier customer you did not have to pay the mig to be a premier customer was £10 a month. After I completed on the mortgage cancelled the direct debit The point of all this is if you have more than 20% equity the banks are keen to push you to the wall as they see that as theirs. banks = scum
  16. The banks are not too interested in people with money hence why they pay around 1% and even less on more than 50k. Banks want people who can pay 8% interest on a loan or better still cant pay it back so they can reposses their house now thats where they really make some serious money
  17. Barclays lost 40k of my money twice in two years and on both occassions took 6 weeks to refund it. First time bad second time beggars belief.
  18. Been with Santander for at least 10 years no mistakes and no charges. Barclays on the other hand absolutely dire.
  19. Sounds about right I used to allow 750-800kg payload for 2 cu metres of Beech around 20% moisture.
  20. I would agree with everything above all my defenders were knackered and not nice to drive but still did the job. You cant beat and oil change and good grease up every 3000 miles for the cost it helps prolong the life of the vehicle. Td5 is a good engine and pulls well at 3000 rpm but just does not seem to have the bottom end torque. Good for towing down the motorway but no good for hill starts.
  21. They dont make the bfg in 255 55 19 so will be getting generals in the next few weeks. I only do around 12-20,000 miles a year so my last bfg went out of shape before they wore out. 5 years and the inside of the case fell to bits about 80,000 miles and still had 4mm left in them. The new ones I replaced them with did not feel great on tarmac but the truck had 150k on it so was a bit loose.
  22. Hi Richard will do my best how many would you need. I sometimes get out to Amesbury or Lindys brother has a unit at wyle.
  23. No matter what truck you buy they all have their problems. The hilux injector seals leak carbon into the eng oil which blocks the oil pump pick up. The ranger springs and gearboxs. L200 just about everything. Puma engine in the defender egr system. the list just goes on and on. I think you need to buy a genuine truck with good history the rest is just pure luck.
  24. Whoops Its taken 9 months to get in front of the orders and she was looking forward to a quiet christmas. If anyone wants to collect a few hundred bags we should be ok . Dont tell her I let the cat out the bag.
