  1. Nearly 200 posts loads of good advice. Did he buy any logs ?
  2. Ok I look forward to reading how you got on after you order from a local arbtalker. Hopefully it will be a positive long term experience for both. 👍🏻
  3. When we supplied logs I had a new tipper body made for the hilux. It was made just over 2 cubic metres so our advertised 2 cu load did not bounce over the sides. We then heaped it up in case it settled on route. I did this so I was not ripping myself or the customer off. In most cases the customer got 2.5 cubic metres of loose logs. 90 % beach cut to 10" unless requested larger. Seasoned for 18 months but I would say 50% of my customers would still shop round to save £10-£20. I would say tk has some good points but talking to the wrong people as most on here will be supply top quality product and will take offence at being tarred with the same brush as your beer money unemployed chancers.
  4. I seem to remember the government added a tax of £10 a tonne to cord extracted from forest commission sites around 2010. Many other land owners then chucked an extra tenner on. I am no expert on Poland or Latvia but I do know minimum wage is around £25 a day and they have the cheapest diesel in Europe. I would imagine their health and safety is lax so you don't need to spend an hour writing 4 sides of a4 to wipe your arse. I doubt they test their lifting equipment or have mots for their vehicles. I bet they don't pay £28,000 + vat for a hilux pick up Does the government hand out a whole raft of eu grants so the country keeps exporting one of their few raw materials. I know the average price for a three bed house is not £278,000 and cost of living is much lower. With all these things I found we were £10 more expensive on 2 cu metres of 3 year seasoned beech logs and even the owner of our local fish and chip shop bypassed us to buy from Latvia. Luckily he is not the only chippy in town.
  5. Part of the problem as you say is there is not a lot of difference between the cost of cordwood and the cost of processed delivered logs. Unfortunately most log suppliers will be trying to live on that margin. Not directed at yourself in any way but there is that old saying Doing the unprofitable for the ungrateful. I appreciate you have found your purchase abroad but still wish to give the business to your fellow country men but I don't know an answer as to how that is going to be done. Hence the reason we stopped processing logs 5 years ago and don't regret the decision one bit.
  6. Glad we don't sell logs anymore in every area there will be a few people doing quality dry logs honestly. But they won't be the cheapest and that's where the problem starts. Competing with goods from less developed poorer economies your on a hiding to nothing. We are fast becoming a country that just moves stuff about and manufactures nothing.
  7. If your valves are blocked could be too many eggs 😊
  8. Talk to mike at mc Kingstone nr Winchester You don't need a machine the rolls come with handles built in you just walk round the pallet. You only use about a third of the material and due to the stretchy nature of the net the pallets tighten up during transport. Mikes net wrap is made from a different material than the rest which makes it better to use.
  9. Good information but needs to be read carefully. If your wife or husband is narsarsistic you are already carrying enough guilt as it is. It's almost a chicken and the egg scenario. Did his depression drive her to drink and worsen her personality disorder. Or was she or he a narc from an early age due to a child hood trauma etc. If someone ticks all the boxes for narc behaviour it won't be long before their partner is suffering low self esteem and eventually depression.
  10. We stopped using shrink wrap. Once you use net wrap there is no going back . You only go round about 7 times so don't need a machine. The pallets don't fall over on transport it's a tenth of the cost and the logs or kindling don't sweat.
  11. I didn't believe in Friday afternoon jobs until I had a disco 4 from hell. A lot of people get on very well with them. It's strange how some vehicles have problems and others with same conponents never miss a beat. I think the hilux is still one of the best trucks out there and hopefully will now give you years of trouble free service. If the the wiring loom was faulty may be this affected the injection and damaged the injectors. At least it's under warranty and Toyota are picking up the bills
  12. Cognitive therapy, mindfulness , wellness, meditation all sounds like a load of mumbo jumbo for wimps but I tell you what it works. You are often being told the obvious but we lead such busy stressfull lives we over look the simple things. If your business is failing you need a holiday. If your business is doing well you can afford a holiday. Basically look after yourselves 🙂
  13. I have never suffered depression until two years ago. But thanks to my wife's increasing drink problem and personality disorders the verbal abuse caused my problem. I managed to shake it off in my home gym much to my wife's annoyance but when I injured my knee water skiing that went out the window. As I progressed into a messy divorce my doctor strongly recommended happy pills. Which I have been on for a year. I would say they are a huge help especially if you are injured or severely depressed. I found Italk was a big help some councillors better than others. The right healthy food and good diet are a must. Excercise releases the same chemicals in the brain the pills do so well worth doing. Alcohol is a depressant leave it alone if like a good drink and regularly it will take a few months for the cravings to go. Take time out to treat yourself. Don't feel guilty and stuff the work get off on some mini breaks we are only here once
  14. We have a new green monofilament net . To get them out there and moving we are going to offer the first 800 at £1.60 per net. First come first served. The bags weigh 3-4 kilos and measure 38x48 new clean biscuit dry pine. 105 bags net wrapped to a pallet ready for collection.
  15. Bedmax and Verdo are both made in Andover Hants and they both have reject stuff. Not sure if it's to far but a good van load may be worth while.
  16. My hand sharpening skills are ok but if my skills get a bit rusty I tend to file too much one side. Then start cutting bananas. My way round this in the past is tickle the chain 5 or 6 times then if things start going pear shape get the bench grinder out. As you can see there is a lot of fruit involved with my sharpening.
  17. If anyone currently needs kindling we have 2000 bags of bone dry neat kindling ready to go. I can deliver 500 bags over the bridge at a keen price but need to charge something for transport. As people have said kindling is well worth doing along side logs bricks coal and fire lighters. I think it will get busy for people on here in the next two weeks the supermarkets and sheds will hopefully start to run low and the cold snap will get people burning. : Happy new year to every one and good luck for 2017 ::thumbup:
  18. Had mine about 12 years and no regrets. Amazed mine still goes the amount we have towed with it.
  19. The best prevention is regular servicing and re grease bearings. But just for belt and braces I often jack our trailers up and spin the wheels any binding or rumbling it's taken of the road and repaired. If you put the hand brake on and of and hubs start binding it's probably the brake cables corroded inside. The biggest cause of stub/bearing failure on trailers not used on slipways and salt water is binding break shoes. The covering on brake cables is very thin and stone chips allow salt water in. I tend to change brake cables at 4 years as a service item . £15 for a cable is a lot cheaper than a hub Assembly at £200
  20. Great info thanks people I will have a look at that camera. I went up last March and the weather was fantastic . It was raining down south and I was on the mountains with sun tan cream on.
  21. Thanks for all the advise I would like to go to the alps but my son needs his first adult passport and you can't express that. Your right about the oil being good ballast. Last time it went used all 5 litres The deciding factor for me is rav is more fun and as you say does 40 mpg LC does 20 but need to consider the safety side. I think it's easier to drive a small car in snow than 2.5 tonnes of dead weight even with 4 wheel drive. You can slide the rav 4 on demand and know exactly where it's going to go. Big 4x4 will jest go where the ice takes it.
  22. Thinking of taking teenage son to glen coe in the new year for bit of snow boarding / skiing. I have a 2wd rav which I love driving even on long runs but if we hit snow ice on the road would it be ok with winter tyres. Or should I just take the Amazon and suffer 1/2 the miles per gallon but at least we have allterrains and 4 wheel drive.
  23. If I had 3 phase I would be tempted but I would need to run the generator and we struggle to keep up with the single phase kindlet anyway.
  24. I have a lister diesel powered stick welder traile mounted. At least 250 amps possibly more. I think it has 110v as well. Looking for £750 if anyone is interested.
