  1. Very nice work there. With regards to the redirects how comes on occasion you used a knot and others the slings? I'm just getting my head around SRT as I don't use it at present. I like the look of the bulldog as I use a lock jack at the mo, how much are they? Think you groundies has perfected the tea pot pose!
  2. Unfortunately not, that would be my plan if things got busier with the logs and I upgraded but as the moment need to stick to either electic, petrol or diesel in stand alone format
  3. Is this the one Mick has got too? If so I've seen his and it looked out, there's one on eBay in Rochester that I'm watching so that could be worth a look. I know jonesies sell them so might get a price from them. I've got to try and get it on the back of the l200 but that's a different thread!
  4. Yeah i know but as I only did around 30 cube last winter I didn't really want to spend a fortune on one at the moment, if I start to do more then maybe I'll upgrade
  5. This winter I want to step up the amount of logs I do. Thus far all I have used is a saw and maul but want to get a splitter to help make things a bit easier. As logs aren't my main thing I don't want to spend a fortune, probably around £750 tops. I appreciate this isn't the biggest budget in the world but want to test the water before committing more money. It can be electric, petrol or diesel so my question if for that budget what would you get?
  6. Not best practice no but an effective way of chogging down. In reality probably no more detrimental than snatching down on a tree with large decay pockets. Wouldn't fancy doing that on a sketchy Lombardy!
  7. As Pete says it comes under chapter 8 as technically you need an operative to put out the signs and a supervisor to check it! You need to apply for permission to do so as well with the LA, the way in which you apply will depend on the LA and their procedure. We had to close on recently with tfl and it's not an easy procedure. The issue would come if you put some signs, cones and barrier tape out and somebody got clipped by a car. Remember some of the general public are not the sharpest knives in the draw and happily walk in the middle of a main road! Google footpath closure and the LA that concerns you and the correct info should come up
  8. If you are using a standard hitch like a prussik or blakes then IMO you may as well go for something like the Xtc Fire or what you had before. When it comes to using the mechanical devices like a lock jack or zigzag then it is worth spending the extra on the smaller diameter lines such as tachyon or the like as they go through the devices better. If you got 4 years out of the last rope that's good going so treat yourself!
  9. Not sure about rates in your neck of the woods but down here in Kent/ s e london the rate would range from £120 - £180 depending on ability and the amount of gear you supply, top end is a top climber supplying extra saws, rigging kit etc
  10. If you are going in to climb for day for someone you are working for that company so they will have the employers liability policy as its there job regardless of whether you are telling the groundies what to do or not. If you are doing your own jobs on the side using guys to help you that's when you may need employers liability which is different from being a sub contract climber
  11. Looks like you made quick work of that oak. Shame as it looked a really nice tree but if its on a busy road and failing limbs then only one outcome. I like the look of the 230 with the fold down hopper as opposed to the normal 150 hopper
  12. Add a rope guide as your friction saver and you won't look back
  13. Nah no air con, I don't drive the loader just run the timber and chip on my non air con truck!
  14. Had a good day yesterday felling 56 poplars, had a crap day today clearing up 56 poplars!
  15. haha yeah spec was to leave stumps high to stop certain members of the community getting on there
  16. Line of fifty odd small/medium size Poplars to fell with full TM, nice to have a machine to do the hard work!
  17. We were reducing a London plane the other day and the dust was making me and the groundie gag. We went back the second day with dust masks, the groundie used his but I couldn't climb in mine, just felt all wrong and didn't like the feel of it! We got the decent ones from Screwfix not just the cheap and cheerful ones
  18. Try this link: How HSE communicates with the tree industry Frances's email is in there as well
  19. Are the HSE still not producing the leaflets? When I last downloaded them they still had the AFAG logo on them. The HSE, as I understand it have people within it who are responsible for arb. At an AA SRT workshop recently Frances from the HSE was there and at the contractors workshop on Saturday there was a guy from the HSE watching the SRT demo and talk by Scott Fraser. Apart from that I don't know either!
  20. hit nail on the head there
  21. Upto 5 years is the guide, I've got a 2012 one that looks nearly new as I don't use it much as I have a harness (don blair) for work and so the tree motion comes out for my own little jobs. In the eyes of the law/legislation you have to follow what the manufactures say but in reality the harness may be suitable for many more years but if something were to happen then there could be trouble from and employer/employee point of view. For the sake of £300 or £5 a month maybe worth replacing but IME there aren't normally that many deals at the AA
  22. Strangely its actually the bit of the job I like the most, tricker the better makes you think! Some of it was rigged and swung back in so didn't need to stop the traffic too much
  23. The manual I've got says upto 5 years from date of production (obviously depends on condition, usage etc etc
  24. Yes all after pics, didn't get and before's unfortunately but the limbs on the right stuck out about 15 -20ft more as this side hadn't been worked for while, maybe because of the road below
  25. Little London plane reduction. Left hand side had been reduced about 5 years ago and the right hand side about 15 years ago looking at the growth and according to the caretaker. Instead of reducing the right hand side last time they opted for bracing for some reason, hence why the cuts are bigger on the right on this reduction
