  1. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-health-care/64699-compressive-tension-reaction-wood.html Found an interesting thread on the subject here. I suppose the fact that the extra wood is put down in response to wind loading would make it a defence structure? I hope so cos I'm 350 words short and can't think of anything else to say on the other subject matters:pcguru:
  2. Mine too. I'm not meaning reactive wood as in new growth around a wound, but reactive wood in the sense of a leaning tree correcting itself. I've already covered codit. Hope this makes more sense.
  3. Im writing a fdscArb entrance paper on Tree Defence Systems and Structures. Think i've got most of it covered but can't decide if the formation of reactive wood would be classed as a defence mechanism. Im thinking if it was in response to a tree being uprooted rather than just phototropism it may be classed as a defence mechanism? What ya reckon?
  4. Still looking, just to add you dont necessarily need all of the quals but would be an advantage.

    H14 winch

Ok cheers guys, my pto unit is a websters not fairey, can you just set the safety point at full? I'm assuming it will still have a safety margin built in at that? I did try increasing it a bit but didn't make much difference but I was cautious as I didn't want to do any damage.
  7. So... Which is best Stihl or Husky???
  8. Hi all, Was using the winch on the Landy to haul some timber up a river bank and the pto clicked out when it reached max load so dipped the clutch and cut stem in half to haul out. However the winch won't pull like it used to now, it's only pulling about half the load it would before but it's not clicking out it just stops turning the out put shaft. Could it be the clutch on the Landy that's slipping or something in the pto box? The clutch pulls the chipper with a full load no probs but once or twice it seemed to have slipped a bit, I suspect it's getting due for a change, but would the winch put much load on the clutch?
  9. Hi all, I have about 200-300 tree stumps to drill for eco plugging, through a woodland site about 20 miles from our yard. Im looking for a suitable cordless drill that will be upto the job without losing power after 5 mins, ive tried with an 18v drill but flattened 2 batteries in about 10mins. Any suggestions?

  11. Usually to stop birds nesting if there's work planned on the hedge
  12. At a guess lay some 4m long sticks every 15ft or so, un roll your netting over them down the length of the hedge,staple/tie the netting to stick then stand them up.
  13. I would have thought it was just the medullary rays splitting when the tension was released, like they do if dried too quickly through shrinkage? At a guess.
  14. 341's are great saws, don't have experience of the husky. I have an old 341 that must be 8 or 10yrs old, been under water twice while running and still going strong.

  19. I would probably use both ends of the rope to get to where you need to be then put a sling round for a foothold and another at waist height clipped into your bridge, that will come in handy to take the weight of your legs between cuts as well.

    ms660 recall

Jon, there's a bit more grunt now although it never lacked in the first place. Rob, I left the spark arrestor in the exit port near the chainbrake and removed the other one to try and direct most of the heat/fumes from the exit away from the brake, not had any probs since.
