  1. got a call from a guy plugging the .gov line asking if i was interested in LA work. Spoke to him today and hes was selling it to me, how they email me within hours of tenders and jobs that the LA's have and looking for compaines to do the work, in order to help smaller companies get work and save the councils money. It does cost anything at all. just got to sign up. This is great i thought where do i sign! Then.... there is just a £99+vat annual fee. Doh! has anybody hear of this company or used them? The website is dgss.co.uk I just had a quick look and it does not make me want to reach for my wallet. seems a bit vauge to me. Any thoughts please! cheers
  2. Hi all i am takeing down 3 oaks on tuesday, in Windsor,Berks providing the weather isnt too bad. U can get a truck rightnext to the fence, and if u have a hiab u can lift out some decents poles (over the fence). They are not giant, about 3ft or so at the base. if nothing else it can be firewood. If anybody wants some (collection only ) drop me a line. cheers Jose
  3. Oh yeah its a 45m! Costs about 920- 960 i forget now. we got him to take us up to the top and let me tell u 45 m dont sound like much but i was holding pretty damn tight to the rails!!!!! yes its a bit windy to say the least and boy is it high! but it made a world of difference. in the pic u can see a building, well up the top of the trees u couldnt see it at all! Add to that there were gas pipes, fibre optic cables and god knows what hidden in the bushes. my biggest surprise was just how far horzintally it can reach. i kept saying thats it, thats it and he would go no joke about another 25ft out! U got to love technology. i used a co called panther, very nice and turned up when they said they would. no complaints.
  4. just to let everybody know after reading this i did a horrible load of pops, 19 in total. First half had a 45m truck mounted, followed by a 35m truck mounted. we did it in 2 days, if climbed it would have taken about 10days. got to say it made a world of difference! i was tired but it is something else to get right to the top of a pop feeling totally safe and not even breaking a sweat! if only i could get more clients to pay! One question i have is what do you all do if you cant get any machinery to aid access? I did 2 yesterday, covered in ivy, proberly 70ft tall ( had been reduced before). I basically climbed to the top and then handballed it down. Untill the top of my anchor point is off it was a a** clenchermoment! Was wondering if anybody has any hints/tips. In all honesty taking into account how brittle they are how likely is it of a pollared limb breaking out? the ones i was on was about 30cm thick. if i can find some pics i will post them, but not hopefull im afraid jose
  5. the saw gets wet a lot with the rain, also its in a none heated building so it does get the temp fluctuation. Didnt get a chance today but i did find the winter baffle. i have taken it off loads of time in the past and never knew it had a secondary position! will have a feel of the fuel can tomorrow, just got convince the tighter other half (businuess partner) that we should get a plastic jerry can instead. cheers guys
  6. no idead about the winter baffle, though will definately have a look tomorrow. the plug is definately black, not grey or brown. i will be pulling it apart a bit tomorrow if i geta min to have a look and clean all the mentioned parts.
  7. do you mean the small square filter inside behind the main carbureatta filter? and yes i do use a metal jerry can. where would the winter baffle be exactly, tbh i have not heard of this before.
  8. i have repalced the clutch springs as these have worn out in the last 3-6 months. i always clean the airfilters, will look at the other bits tomorrow given time. thanks for the quick replies.
  9. Hi all. i got a 200t which is at most 1 1/2 yrs old. always run fine untill recently when it would run fine but not idle, ie it would cut out everytime i stopped reving it. it didnt seem to matter if i upped the idle or adjusted the fuel settings. then the other day it just cut out and would not start again. I took out the spark plug and it was very sooted up. i cleaned it up and the saw started fine again but still wont idle. i run all my other saws, blowers etc on the same fuel and nothing else has any problems bar i old 011 which i was recently given which seems to be suffering the same problems. i put a brand new spark plug into the saw but this has made no difference. i am not sure what is the best move to take next. does this sound like it the carburetta (excuse the spelling)? many thanks for any advice.
  10. Crane it! its so much faster, also there is (within reason) so much less to go wrong or break and its a hell of a lot more gentle on ur back!
  11. free hand everytime!
  12. Where abouts exactly and or a phone no. I am local and always looking for a place for chippings. Is it free dropping or is he looking for payment for it? I got a number off a site which had loads of info on woodchips qulaites etc for selling on as a bio fuel but cant find it now. I do know that the guy i spoke to said they paid 10per ton and their trucks held 26 tones a time. not sure what the current rates are at present though. cheers
  13. humm i think you may be right. ok thank you for your input, i really dont want to invest in something to find out its not going to work out ( especially financailly as really thats why we all do it!). Many thanks Jose
  14. i had not really thought of it from that angle! Interesting, and not really in a good way! thanks for the reply! anybody used a Eco-Combi? Its spec says it can chip and shred. is this a viable option for a tree surgeon as surely i would never have any sweepings etc ever again! cos losing chippings is not problem but rubbish is. cheers
  15. General question really. Being asked to quote to remove green waste ( gardening arisings ie grass weeds branches leaves etc). 8-10 tones a wk at various sites around london. Most likely it will be stored in building sacks, to be collected 1-2 times a weeks. Currently they take it to the local tip and pay £80-100 per tonne. They are currently trying to cuts costs so have asked me if i can provide a better solution. Anybody have any ideas/ input or is this already to tight a margin to make it worth getting into to. Was considering getting a shredder ( like a timberwolf) if i can make it pay. Also does this waste, once shredded have any decent use at all( ie like with woodchips which can be used for power stations etc)? many thanks Jose
  16. i have got the 125 modle and i got to say it has been faultless. yes it helps being light ( we push ours all over the place, down alleys etc which saves us no end of hassle and bother). I would like a bigger machine ( had a 190 loaner for about 2mths which was lovely) but with keeping wood for fire wood i dont need a bigger machine. saying that i was speaking to a main dealer the other day and he said both the 150 and 190 had problems with the bearings and expected them to last about 2yrs before needing them changed. not sure how many hrs that is though
  17. i know a guy down the road in binfield/wokingham area who takes logs and chip but charges £25 a van load ( transit). i can dig out his no for u, but dont know any free sites in reading. let me know if you do find one!
  18. i didnt think they take it direct from tree surgeons. what are u doing, ie is it conifer rubbish chips or good stuff?

    let them know?

    i have got the crane operator out to the site and hes has no objectstions or worries. The grass area is very large and soes not affect the sight line of the road in any way. I think i will have a word with them as u r correct in saying if someone sticks the beak in and the council stops the job then its my wallet that is going to bleed! As for the ring barked its a bit of a story. 20 yrs ago when the house was built the developers were meant to fell the tree ( owner has the papers to prove this). in there wisdom ( saving money!) they didnt. this is a big tree about 3m max from his house. Owner contact the council who agreed totally that it should have come down but since it hadnt it was tough luck and slapped a tpo on it. The owner had to fight with the council as he was unable to get and home insurance. eventually they said there was no record of any secoyas ever falling in the uk so combined with that info managed to convince insurance co to cover him. Anyway every year since for the last 20yrs he applies to remove the tree. This year he applies and gets a new tree officer on the phone who says that that particular tree is not covered. Next days tree officer comes out and confirms this in person. Owner is estatic, runs to the shop and buys a hatchet and ring barks it to ensure it comes down. 2 days later a council letter arrives saying they are removing all tpo's in area and putting down a blanket cover. Obvisly he is very concered and contacts them aagin who then say a tree officer cant come out for 2wks! Lucky for him ( not sure if its good for me) i had come out the day after he ringed it, before they had sent the letter so he has a witness against any pos prosecution.

    let them know?

    ahh i hate the way the world is all about covering ones backside. a word with the Tree officer or is it more a planning department thing?
  22. I am taking down a large tree with a crane( Secoya) in nov. It has been cleared by the tree officer (it has been ring barked). Its on a private back garden. My plan is to park all vehicles on a council owned grass area behind his house. All vehicles will be completely off any roads and it will not disturb traffic or pedestrians. Temporary road will be put down to protect the grass from vehicles so no damage to the grass. I will be informing the council 7days before hand so they know its coming down. My question is do i need to inform them/ ask permission to work on the grass? Reason being it wont affect anybody or traffic and without sounding funny but i personally like to avoid asking the LA anything cos they tend to start a pain-in the a$$ process of covering there own backsides. many thanks

    tree report

    Does anybody have an idea what it costs for an independant company to do a tree report. Not trying to be difficult but roughly on a rolling day basis. I have been asked to do one on quite a few sites ( would take between 1-2wks) to do. it is covering areas area west london ( stanwell slough maidenhead etc). Also does anybody know any decent compaines that the can recommend? Many thanks Jose
