    Hi Gerrit, sorry, should of said i knew it was daldinia but surely this hasn't done the initial damage? i did think squirrels like matt suggested but wasn't entirely sure, could it be something else?

    found this today on an acer platanoides, i think its xylaria hypoxylon but would it grow this high up and is it the right time of year, and what would it be doing to the tree if it is?
