  1. Hi all. I've recently been felling some decent sized Elms and was wondering if it would be worth getting some of it milled rather than putting it to firewood, any advice would be welcome. Are there any mobile milling outfits in Southern Scotland ?
  2. Richmonds do supply, great tool.
  3. Well worth going to see it, did it a couple of years ago, great day out.
  4. Sorry Welwell, havn't been on for a couple of days, no problems with ram return as the power pack works at 40 ltrs/min. I've thought about putting a cross style splitting head on it but some of the timber I split is quite large and full of knots.
  5. Good call. You know what you have to make per day and if you drop your rate just to get work (and make nothing, or lose money) then you'd be better staying at home.
  6. I made it myself from scratch, cant remember exactly what it cost but roughly as below Ram: Bought from tractor breaker £20.00 "H" beam Scrap dealer £10.00 Spool valve Hydraulic dealer £50.00 Power pack Ebay £350.00 Tow pack (wheels suspension etc) Ebay £100.00 Steel Don't know as I don't have the bill yet Some of these prices are rough prices as the basic splitter was built some years ago, and most of the parts are second hand but I would think you could build something similar for under £1000 (not putting too much on for your own time) If anyone wants one made let me know.
  7. Managed to get some picks of my log splitter. As I said yesterday it's the 3rd incarnation of this machine, but it seems to work well. The bar carrying the lights etc. is removeable for working.
  8. I'll try to get some picks tomorrow of the one I made. It was originally made to fit on a skid steer, then I added a 3 point linkage for a tractor and now I've put it on its own wheels and added a power pack.
  9. As said earlier, great to see Belties in NZ. Brings back some nice memories for me as my father used to breed & judge them. Sorry to go "off topic".
  10. I agree with what you guys are saying, I think many of us are guilty of working too hard for too long and are probably victims of our situtation (being self employed), trying to maximise what we do. Untill a few years ago I lived to work but now I work to live.
  11. I hear what you'r saying Highland & thats probably why I stick to the Icicle both on my climbing line and my 8m strop, tie it , set it and thats it for the day. simple.
  12. I like the icicle, it grips well but probably not quite as free running as the distel, although I have 4 wraps on it as I'm a fairly big guy. Don't use a micro pully as I feel it's more clutter I can do without (or I'm just old fashioned).
  13. Type in "distel hitch" into google images and you should see the knot, sorry don't have a picture myself. I know a couple of guys that use it and sware by it. Use the Icicle myself.
  14. Hi DBG. I would recommend going for it with SAC if possible. I did it a few years back with them, great course. I take it you've spoken to Matt Cooper as they were advertising a course this year. I'm sure others on here will have some suggestions to get you sorted.
  15. You could try sticking a Kongskklde cyclone on the end of your chipper. Farmers use them for grain blowing, it will take the air out the system and drop the chip onto the trailer.
  16. Fell & replant, you've already admitted there's a problem with the tree and that's how a court of law will look at it if, it ever came to that. Remember this is a school and these are peoples sons and daughters which could (heaven forbid) be affected. I would try to preserve a tree where possible but not here.
  17. SWB can you pm me dealer details, would'n mind having a look myself.
  18. Tom you could try Pentland Plants at Loanhead, they are in the woodchip business but don't know if they take arb arisings. You could also try Jenkinsons at lockerbie.
  19. Stevie. PM your email & I'll send you the registration form.
  20. Stevie. Don't know if you Know but FC are running a Biomass sceminar at Hamilton on 9th Sept. I know it's not the same as this event but might be worth a look.
  21. Thanks Richard PM your details & I'll get in touch.
  22. Looks like a Holder to me.
  23. I know what you'r saying Timber Cutter. I used to be a manager for a recycling & landfill company.
  24. Thanks guys, not a huge amount, about 3 days worth of chipping.
  25. Does anyone on here know where I can get rid of chip from a job I've got near Haddington, East Lothian.
