  1. Just keep on going as you are Stevie and try to get your kids swimming somewhere down the line. I was brought up more or less the same as you and I've done the same with my kids (although not so much kids now 19 & 16) but both are still keen to come and give me a hand whenever possible.
  2. What price for the one you have left ?
  3. If you do it yourself you need to have the chapter 8 qualification and apply to LA for permission to erect temp. traffic lights. You may also have to apply for a Road occupancy permit which in my area is free if you occupy the road for less than 24 hrs. I got Lux in recently to do the lights for me (£350 per day) but usually do it myself.
  4. Do any of the tree surveyors among us use lasers for measuring tree height or canopy spread and if so what do you use, how good are they ?
  5. Ed, do you need an operators licence to run one ?
  6. Just finished training and assessment for LOLER examination, tough course Just got to wait for results now, fingers crossed. Anyone else sat it recently, what did you think ?
  7. I've done quite a bit of bat survey work, working with a licenced bat handler. Don't have the licence myself but i've lots of experience, good fun & interesting.
  8. Yes Jamie, I confirmed my booking last week.
  9. Jamie, SAC were still trying to sort things out late last week, the girl who sorts bookings etc at Auchincruive is off sick & Rosemary at Lanark has been sorting things, might be worth giving her a call. They can take payment via a card if its quicker for you.
  10. I've got a 3120 and reckon its a good saw for big stuf but too heavy to use for any length of time. I'd rather use my MS650 or old 281.
  11. Wife went to the agri supplier today, couldn,t get uddermint but brought back Mint-ease Liniment cream. Works a treat.
  12. Ok Stevie, PM me the number and I'll follow it up. Thanks.
  13. Hi all. I've recently been felling some decent sized Elms and was wondering if it would be worth getting some of it milled rather than putting it to firewood, any advice would be welcome. Are there any mobile milling outfits in Southern Scotland ?
  14. Well worth going to see it, did it a couple of years ago, great day out.
  15. Sorry Welwell, havn't been on for a couple of days, no problems with ram return as the power pack works at 40 ltrs/min. I've thought about putting a cross style splitting head on it but some of the timber I split is quite large and full of knots.
  16. Good call. You know what you have to make per day and if you drop your rate just to get work (and make nothing, or lose money) then you'd be better staying at home.
  17. I made it myself from scratch, cant remember exactly what it cost but roughly as below Ram: Bought from tractor breaker £20.00 "H" beam Scrap dealer £10.00 Spool valve Hydraulic dealer £50.00 Power pack Ebay £350.00 Tow pack (wheels suspension etc) Ebay £100.00 Steel Don't know as I don't have the bill yet Some of these prices are rough prices as the basic splitter was built some years ago, and most of the parts are second hand but I would think you could build something similar for under £1000 (not putting too much on for your own time) If anyone wants one made let me know.
  18. Managed to get some picks of my log splitter. As I said yesterday it's the 3rd incarnation of this machine, but it seems to work well. The bar carrying the lights etc. is removeable for working.
  19. I'll try to get some picks tomorrow of the one I made. It was originally made to fit on a skid steer, then I added a 3 point linkage for a tractor and now I've put it on its own wheels and added a power pack.
  20. As said earlier, great to see Belties in NZ. Brings back some nice memories for me as my father used to breed & judge them. Sorry to go "off topic".
  21. I agree with what you guys are saying, I think many of us are guilty of working too hard for too long and are probably victims of our situtation (being self employed), trying to maximise what we do. Untill a few years ago I lived to work but now I work to live.
