  1. I appreciate the grab and crane can take the weight, I just don't trust hem to stay closed! You know where you are with a strop.
  2. You're brave lifting it with the grab!!
  3. You've hit the nail on the head in your last paragraph, to progress you need a familiar team used to working together and with your kit. I'm at a similar stage to you and take the view that losing a medium sized job at say £2k due to lack of labour is worse than paying a man for a few weeks of a year where things are a little slow.
  4. Exactly right, however as he wasn't working directly for me I'm sure he won't take responsibility for his poor work.
  5. Mine had some damage up top presumably from a crane incident. We just sprayed it in 2k outside this time of year. Looks fine and easy to do second thing I'd sprayed after the body we built on the lorry with the proper gear I.e not rattle cans.
  6. Mine was like that and a hole in he side of it just out of shot patched up both sides in a day and re painted easily. I've not swapped a cab but assuming you have a crane or telehandler etc it should be fairly straight forward. Just depends how many parts get broken in the process which can't be replaced same day which would hold up the job.
  7. Hmmm j have the report for the rebuild and it says all gaskets and oil seals were replaced, but I must say this piece of rubber does not look months old, however I've not seen a new one. So I'll have to order up a set of gaskets on Monday I suppose.
  8. It's a 99 machine so could be a similar design.
  9. The engine was rebuilt about 9 months ago, I fear they may have re used a few bits along the way leading to this. The rubber pictured just seems to fill a void at the back of the sump and sea it to the block, the main appears to be captive in a 2 piece shell just above the bottom of the block. However, I've not removed the sump yet. What do the bolts do that sit under the rubber? Do they adjust it as they were particularly tight ?
  10. It's a chipper, perkins engine
  11. Forgot the pictures!
  12. I'm trying to sort an oil leak at the moment, thought it was the rear crank seal, but I'm fairly sure it's not that or the seal around it but this one just below, the sump gasket, however after removing the bell housing from back of engine extends into this large bit of rubber with two bolts with lock nuts protruding beneath, I've not seen one like this before are the two bolts underneath there to push the rubber against the bottom of the block to create a seal? Or should I just drop the sump off and instant gasket it ?
  13. Would be interested to hear your opinions on procuring commercial work Bob. Generally for domestic I think you just need to wisely trial things and see what works, preferably use recommended means of advertising by asking other business owners you know and go from there. A good well ranked website is always good and adwords.
  14. Hi Al, where has your can rusted? Mine had gone where they mostly seem to at the bar of the B pillar of yours is the same this is very easy to repair effectively. The cab swap seems a good option but I found they were hard to find in a good enough condition to warrant swapping and also there are lots of plastic air pipes that come up to the cab and they're fine if left alone but if messed about with would likely need replacing and some of them are not cheap.
  15. Is it at the base of the B pillar where it joins the fibreglass fender ?
  16. Billy

    Nissan Cabstar

Why not go to 7.5t ? The jap ones are still quite narrow.
  17. ....that would be because it is the same vehicle!
  18. This one is very similar may be worth a look http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172211308032
  19. Use a mini loader, sounds like good access.
  20. Get yourself a car and keep the landy if it's the right vehicle for the job
  21. Nice one! That is perfect. Shame it came up for sale a year after I bought mine or would have had it in the blink of an eye, surprising that it seems to have been relatively hard to shift.
  22. all these sort of replies make me wonder...Are you lot claiming this is unobtainable just trying to defend your interests by playing down what you're earning, or you genuinely make substantially less than this and see no other way ?
  23. I can't imagine anything worse than being an employed class 1 driver but you need class one/ C+E to tow anything over 750kg behind a category C vehicle so unless you want to chip into an 18t lorry with a pathetic little chipper C+E is a must.
  24. Truck locator magazine but the two you mentioned should have it covered all sorts turned up on there. Was a nice Iveco similar to mine a few weeks back but with roro instead of tipper, would have made a great tree work truck.
