  1. I wish I could find the bromeliad photos I took. Poison dart frogs would lay eggs in the water holes in the center then lay sterile eggs to feed the tadpoles. We saw an Eyelash viper in a flowering bromeliad, most likely waiting for a humming bird. I wish I'd had a digital camera back then.
  2. It was in Costa Rica on the pacific lowlands. The cloud forests and caribean coasts had a much more stable climate with a more consistent moisture content in the air. The guy we did this for explained that the seasonal variations in this area produced an environment for these epiphetes which is more hostile than most desets. I can't remember to many of the ins and outs but I think most of these orchids had a symbiotic relationship with ants. Anyway it was an interesting and slightly geaky weeks work.
  3. I knew I had some old photos somewhere. I have lost a lot of my old photos or they have been damaged by humidity. These are a couple I found of an orchid survey in 2002. We climbed and rigged a temporary platform for an orchid expert. I think he identified 50 species in this one tree. Unfortunately these are my only photos that survived. I would love to find the bromeliad photos with frogs inside.
  4. I agree Andy. There was nothing revolutionary in terms of what was being discussed but it was still worth while. I would be very interested in the day at Windsor Ted suggested. Please let me know if someone manages to sort this out (hint, hint David).
  5. Does it start at 10am? Just making sure as I got a bit of a drive
  6. Havent you got some cs units to revise for?
  7. I didnt say that their work was a lower standad.
  8. But they will be allowing the CHAS contractors to enter the frame work (which is entirely focused on cost) and there is no requirement to be an AAAC. This as I see it puts those of us you are AAAC at a distinct disadvantage as we will be competing entitely on cost with other contractors who do not incur all the other costs involved in being an AAAC. DCC want cheap work, thats that. Its is hard to see the financial benifits of being arb approved when county councils no longer request it (and theres no shortage of AAAC's in Devon to obtain tenders from). Its hard to see where the AA have sucessfully promoted the scheme recently.
  9. Paul, is that DCC? If so the jist I got from the meeting was that they wanted CHAS or equilalent and were pretty much disregarding AAAC's. This was a bit of a shock as they requested all AAAC's get CHAS or they would be unable to tender. Trust Mark was seen as a CHAS equivalent but AAAC not. It was a bit of a shock and made me question whether DCC were supporting the AA scheme these days. I saw the whole CHAS thing as a way for the council to get a wider range of contractors on their list so they could screw us all down on price.
  10. Your "all being equal argument is totally fictional. The running cost will vary with every outfit even if they appear to be doing a simmilar job. Wages, traing budgets, ppe budgets, accreditation cost, holiday entitlement the list goes on. I doubt too many firms are eqaul on all accounts. Also the larger outfits will have a lower cost per man than smaller firms. Huck with tens of grand in kit on a job will have a much higher running cost per man than a large firm with lots of 3 man teams out in fleet hire transits. A small, well equiped, aaac or similarly accredited company will have a much higher running cost per employee than either a pikey outfit or a national company such as fountains. I've no doubt is possible to charge less and make more profit because in my few years being self employed I did.
  11. We used to buy insectide chalk in the tropics, it was pence. Dunno what was in it, most likely ddt. No bug would cross the chalk line not even army ants. Get some of that on your apples
  12. Exactly. A proffesional approach attracts better customers.
  13. stuart arnett clarke on here has done it
  14. Anyone get a reply from atf? I filled in the form but not heard back. Do we just turn up?
  15. Sounds like the going rates down here. What do you think is the equivalent to these rates for paye?
  16. Go to the library and look for local trust funds. Theres loads set up to help fund young people to do all sorts. My mate got 2g towards a round the world surf trip at 19. Rich old folk set these things up and no-one knows they are there. You'd be amazed at what opportunities are available once you get yourself out there
  17. If its a ceiba its not that bad. Could be a sand box tree then your in real trouble. The sap sqiuirts out if you knock off a thorn and it will blind you.
  18. It pissed me off last week. I've since been on holiday and I couldn't care less now. If some one wants to copy what were doing, I'll take it as a compliment. It just shows a lack of imagination to rip off stuff from someone less than a mile away when there are 1000s of firms out there to copy from.
  19. Met a couple a few years back in Nicaragua who were driving round the world in something similar. It had a boat strapped to one side and a motorbike on the other. How the other half live hey?
