  1. You'll be making a shaving horse when you get a knife. Followed by.......
  2. It's an addiction. I now have fifteen plus axes an adze and drawknives. Just found an old drawknife that had been thrown into a skip:001_smile:
  3. I burnt the clutch out on a Datsun pick up manouvering one of those about for a couple of months.
  4. I worked on one when I was at school. Thurs and Fri evenings and all day Saturday. I also did the chipping...dustbins full of em. As I remember there was a lot of prep time involved and lots of gas used. The upside was you were never hungry but you always stank of fat. Not much help I know but it could do ok going around villages on Fridays and Saturdays.
  5. Used one for a season once sticking thinnings through it. Gravity fed and plenty of power.
  6. Fair play to the man. He needed a saw and now he has one. As said before...necessity is the mother of invention.

After reading that I shall make an appointment to see the Doc. Done nothing about mine since my breaks years ago but the pain when walking now is getting unbearable.

My two Ochsenkopf axes. Both 1250g which is about perfect weight for hedge laying. Don't know their model name.

I get it with various stages of acuteness. I've broken two lower vertabrae on two separate occasions. I can work ok but it really gets me walking around slowly such as a show or looking around a shop. The pain becomes so severe all I can do to relieve it is sit on the ground. After a short while I'm good to go for another ten minutes. Trouble is I've got knee trouble with ruptured tendons and getting up is another pain:001_smile:
  10. When I first worked with some old school fallers their favourite saying was: a foot at the bottom is worth a yard at the top.

I'll try and get a few shots tomorrow. If ever we meet up you can try it out.

I have a passion for English edge tools: axes, hooks, slashers etc. But the best axe for hedge laying is the Oxhead. With a shorter helve it handles and cuts like nothing else.
  13. No worries. Often wondered why the service interval on bikes is measured in hours as opposed to a saw which runs till it stops:001_smile: 4t bke man myself so should probably shut up:biggrin: Although service intervals on these are hours now!

It doesn't. My two main edge tools for hedge laying are an old SJ Yorks hook and Ox Head axe. At razor sharpness they are easy to use and at the end of a day they will have lost little of their edge. Unless I've hit some crap.
  15. Yes it does. The acuminata I had was about 24" and as plain as anything. Once had a 12" dia apricot tree which the local turners went mad for.

They should do but this one won't! I can usually tell if they've been overheated. Maybe this one has in the distant past.

I end up with a bald left arm after a sharpening session too:001_smile:
  18. The magnolia trees as opposed to garden shrubs usually produce a straight bole.
  19. I once cleared one; M. acuminata. The guys from the Greenwood Trust were keen to get hold of it but, as I remember, were disappointed with the timber.
  20. I think it's the Asian variety that's under DEFRA control. I had them once in a mantlepiece I cut for the house. Had to catch them as they emerged:001_smile:

I don't think it's been abused by a bench or angle grinder. It came to me as a rusty discarded tool. No signs of grinding. I cleaned it using a battery charger and washing soda. It will take a passable edge but it will not shave my arm even after leather stropping.
  22. Just so we're clear, "having a bike that is falling apart" AKA "I shouldn't care about the state of my saw" is your answer? No. What I infered but probably wasn't really clear is that a lot of riders spout that certain oils are cr@p etc and others who don't ride polished and pampered bikes, but still racing enduro machines, will use any 2t that comes to hand. Very rarely see any bikes seized using less well known oils or otherwise.

They are a good shape and thin enough. I have a Whitehouse one but it won't take a good enough edge.
  24. Being involved in bikes I hear so many opinions on Motul this, Putoline....Redline...Castrol etc. Those who spout all this usually can't ride and never run their motors to the max. Some of the best riders I've seen have a bike that's falling apart and stick whatever oil in the mix they have to hand and their bikes never blow up:001_smile:

I'd try one if I knew someone that uses one. A lot of cutters tend to use the Oschenkopf though.
