  1. Did a weeks' work for a lady who lived in a beautiful house on the banks of the Wye. Each day she supplied breakfast and a cooked meal at the kitchen table. Put the food on the table and left us to it. On another occasion we worked for the top man of a TV channel. He had a country house in Norfolk which he let us stay in whilst we did the job. His housekeeper met us, showed us where everything was and left us for three days.
  2. English elm, english oak and yew. They'd supply all your needs in life and death.
  3. Thanks. At one stage I felt like setting fire to it.
  4. Another shot from the same comp but laid on a much lighter hedge. Welsh borders style. The farm was at Bagley near Oswestry and our hedge was probably last laid about thirty years ago.
  5. Fair bit of work! Anyway two pints of Tanglefoot and a hot bath to draw out the thorns:001_smile:
  6. Did the Shropshire match today. Was a big old gruelling hedge. Gnarly and brittle.
  7. Looks like one but there are so many variables with oak.
  8. Good news and hope all goes well.
  9. I'd definitely have another. If you need a car to do more then get a L/R.
  10. I've got a Nissan X-trail as my car. Competent enough off road, comfortable, tows well and gets 40mpg. Reliable too.
  11. I'd like to bid more but the postage is killing it.
  12. Won't accept my bids now and I really want it.
  13. I know. Seems I have to bid £5100 to stand a chance:001_smile:
  14. No you won't:001_smile: Just off to do some more on a wet roadside hedge where the traffic won't slow down!
  15. Is there enough weight in it for cutting pleachers and also strength for giving them a twist? I'd guess it's probably ok for trimming brush etc.
  16. Nice tidy job there Steve. Good job you had Wimpole to get you into the swing:thumbup1:
  17. If you get your hook when it comes to sharpening don't be tempted to grind an edge with a power tool. If you need to sort out the bevel use a good millsaw file. I hone with a small oilstone and then strop with leather.
  18. Probably because he was hawking Chinese copies.
  19. Gilpin hook should have two crossed axes on it. From a time when English edge tools were the finest in the world.
  20. Gilpin were originally at Wedges Mills near, what is now, the Roman Way hotel and Whitehouse were a little further up the A5 at Bridgetown. Before setting up his edge tool forge Whitehouse worked for both Elwell and Gilpin.
  21. This guy makes beautiful tools olivemead forge
  22. Good hooks. The 9=9 inches and 10= 10 inches. This is a good reference to find the exact pattern Index of /images Those two forges were within a mile of each other. Now built over
  23. The two hooks I use all the time are sharpened to a razor edge. They'll wet shave you if you dare to try:001_smile: Elwell 2976 and old SJ Yorks. They'll keep that edge virtually all day. Try using a modern Bulldog, Spear and Jackson etc and the difference is incredible even when you've spent hours getting the edge and bevel into some sort of shape.
  24. Get hold a decent old hook. The generally available new hooks aren't a patch on old ones. Get a good one and the steel will have a real whistle to it. My old Yorkshire will knock spots off any modern hook.
