You could well be correct on this one. What can't be seen on the failed section is a large, old pruning wound which was level with the cavity

Not sure if they're immune but they're certainly resistant to DED.

The fungus is a cause of the decay. Prior to losing that limb it wasn't visible externally. The fruiting bodies were inside the cavity.

Part of a coppice with standards woodland. Big old chestnut past its prime but should be there for a good few years yet. Is all that chestnut coppice going to be harvested?

Few pics of a failed syc we felled last year. Two TOs couldn't identify fruiting bodies inside the cavity and sent them to Alice Holt for ID. I had my suspicions and was pooh poohed but turned out correct. Any ideas?

Do you work them? I was well into springers...even had one to FT standard which for me was unknown:001_smile: Hope they're ok.
