  1. Joined to be heducated and access (and contribute) to the knowledge Worst thing you can do, is to think you know it all. Also we work in a great industry with a big sense on community. Arbtalk is a major hub of the community.
  2. HTC desire HD was best phone of 2011 on Gadget Show and in Daily Telegraph. Android phones are outselling iphones in US. More of the apps are free than iphone. Android is opensource. I have had various HTC phones, got a Legend at present, fantastic phone. Would not swap to any other make (had nokia/samsung before)
  3. Andy We can help, a large Tree Spade will be required like the one on the left. Please give me a call to discuss. Regards Robert T: 01277 849990
  4. Sean My understanding is that at Kew OPM is a public health issue not an arb issue, hence the approach. Apparently in Spain & Portugal they shut the forests when the caterpillars are about. Excellent diary, jealous of your working environment!!
  5. Fantastic diary, what a brilliant place to work!! Please enlighten me. How many OPM nests where removed in Richmond Park this year? Was it more than last year? Do you use a kill everything insecticide like Kew (not against it, just makes me realise how serious this is) ?
  6. Hope you have enough ££ on it!!! Do not sell yourself short!
  7. They have this problem around Sydney Harbour in Oz it is amplified because the rest of the country is sooooo devoid of anything interesting (so I was told!). When this happens they put a big sign up blocking the view created with a message on it saying along the lines of you are not getting away with this. The result is a much worse view than what was there originally. No worries!
  8. I work in an office, hence not practical. 1) Helped the lads load up a 20-25cm girth tree by hand, we could not lift it on the truck, it was pointed out, I was standing on the tail end of the rope wound around the rootball to assist lifting. I am not light. 2) A 21ft scaffold pole, scaffold clip at one end. waiting for a team to return late due to the M25, thought I would help by removing the clip. I lifted one end upto make the undoing of the clip easier. I achieved this, but as I did, the scaffold pole fell, onto my toe, in much pain I went home where my brother saw me take off my sock, blood was building up behind the nail, he said leave it to me I can sort this, he heated up a six inch nail, pierced the nail, blood hit the ceiling. Went to A&E cause it was still hurting, they said who did this (relieving the pressure), they could not believe it was a (non medically trained ) brother using a 6" nail. It was end of a shift, all of A & E came to see as well as all of the new shift. Went home, (with broken big toe) told by brother, he then revealed he had only ever read about it.
  9. When amcide was due to be banned either on here or UKTC against the noise of what are we going to use now, came a few voices along the line of why are you spending money on amcide, use rock salt, its the same, cheaper and works just as well, we've been using it for years.
  10. Try and find out what your local native hedge consists of. It varies. If you plant hawthorn plant 20% blackthorn also. We did a native hedge for a client who needed a traditional native hedge but with high visual amenity. We added Dog Rose, Wayfaring Tree, Hazel, native Dogwood and many more 3 years on whilst it can look like a visual riot to some, to others it is a lovely welcome twist to a native hedge, as though it has put its slap on for a night out!!
  11. We have used the older versions of these. very good point and shot auto focus etc. It is a bit weird washing it under a tap when it gets dirty. Never had a problem with them.
  12. This is our biggest spade. Admittedly it is not very good for chipping into the back of! [/ATTACH]
  13. Martyn Dappled shade or full shade? Native or non native ? What spread ? Evergreen or deciduous? Let me know and I will make suggestions, call me and I would be willing to discuss choice. Robert Ruskins Trees 01277 849990
  14. Try Martin Rutherford at Wildwood Tree Surgeons, he has recently swapped the riverside delights of south essex for the seaside at Whitstable
  15. Congratulations !! 1) Now you will learn what tired means 2) Best bit of advice that I got about a baby, was that the first 26 years were the worst!
  16. When asked for business owner / director always reply they are playing golf. Part of a strategy a) to waste their time and b) to reinforce peoples belief that owning a small business is a desirable pseudo - leisure activity (lol). No -one has ever left a message or phoned back. Another thing to play with the scripted minds of any customer services / questionnaire people is to reply when they ask "if I can help with anything else, I now reply "can you bring our troops home safely from Afghanistan ?" Used to be, can they stop global warming alternated with stop the rise in salinity of the oceans. How the times have changed.

  18. Lee We do this every day and would be delighted to give you pointers. Email with trunk diameter above root collar, soil profile, your timescale and access details to [email protected] Bob
  19. On a slight tangent. I was told by an arb cons that Pruning will at some point restrict roots, otherwise ancient field hedges would have roots right across the field. Although he paraphrased it, "if you slap (prune) a hedge for long enough, it will enventually learn that it does not need a large root system".
  20. Hort Week, was telling all, short supply (due to Danish govt change in subsidy) and price increases of at least 15%. Our local Christmas tree man, cut his wholesale order from 20,000 to 10,000 mainly due his perception that the recession would result in less demand and people would not pay the extra.
  21. Apologies if you have seen something like this before Tree touches live power line with electrifying consequences - Fire caused by 23,000 v... Please explain what happens to make the fire go out Rob
  22. Our sister company has imported chippers from the states. call me on 01277 849990 and I will give you there contact details. Rob
  23. Our sister company was broken into on Monday night. They got away with the above. They also took a vermeer 10" but luckily a very helpful landowner found it hidden in bushes and took the time to find us, before they came back to move it on. A small plant trailer and stump grinder also were nicked. We assume the tracked stump grinder was put in the trailer. The woodchipper was found in East Tilbury, please keep your eyes peeled! They moved a pickup out of the way with a stolen telehandler and just to spread the misery they caused dropped it on top of a minibus owned by our the next door company. The last two digits of the stump cutter are 04
  24. I would be obliged if we could have the opportunity to quote on these Silver Limes. Please send details to [email protected] or call 01277 849990. We have extensive experience in supplying / planting / aftercare of such trees.

    Yours
