  6. Welcome to the sunny world of forestry. Simple answer is you need a machine. A quad bike will probably be the cheapest solution, or see if you can blag a tractor as you will be able to skid out the trees whole. If you can't then it is brute force and pig ignorance. 9. I love doing logs, but it is part of the forestry work that i do. I have a good working relationship with a couple of estates, to which i have put in alot of effort over the last five years. This effort is now starting to pay off. Selling a mixture of timber roadside and stockpiling, will if i sell all my split/ stacked logs put me into profit, and a good share to the landowners. All you need is the mighty Nuffield of power and a bit of effort. If i had to buy in, pay rent, and run a processer, then i would struggle to make any profit. Keep it Simple
  10. I have to plant a crimbo tree that won't grow too big. Currently there is a reciently dead Korean Fir, which i think is the best type of tree, as it is pretty, not too big when fully grown, and with fantastic purple cones. Does anybody have a better sugestion ? Helpfull or otherwise Where is the best place to buy a 6' tree. I have tried to persade tham to get a smaller tree, as it makes it harder to get it established. But they want a big tree.
  11. Nope, but it is going to be expensive. You will need an to have a lot of timber to process to pay for that.
  12. It is a W cut for heavily leaning trees. You cut 2 mouths at 90 to each other. It reduces the chances of splits rips, and badgers chairs. It does need commitment, as once you start don't stop. The tree comes down quick so you don't want to be near it, as bent trees tend to bounce around abit.
  13. I will have to record it as i have been out voted, ruddy Downton Abbey

  19. Mine have stayed waterproof, but i have not used them much over the last couple of months. But the stiching around the toe has come undone, so i am sending them back next week. I like the grip and support they provide, and they are very good for foot locking. But as others have already said for the money they do not last.
  20. I am sure that you could have codged another of those gert lumps on that lorry. Good job
  21. From reading your replies Nature, you are not totally sure what you want out of your wood. As things stand you are unlikly to lose money by buying the wood in the long term. If i was in your situation i would keep a third of the wood for myself to do with what you want, and use the other 2/3 to provide some income to cover some of the costs (training, equipment etc.) of you doing whatever you want in your third. You will also need good advice to deal with the TPO element. Speak to the tree officer at the council, he or she will be able to tell you what is appropriate, and what you will/ wont be able to do. Good luck P.S. i am very envious
