  6. Nothing particularly wrong with halving them as long as he’s happy with entering into an ongoing maintenance cycle. It would be topping, not a reduction. Climbing the regen isn’t a great idea so I’d say you’d be more likely to have a 3 year cycle than 5 with poplars. As Steve says, they won’t look particularly nice, and will rot at the topping points.

  24. Your best bet would be to find a local tree surgeon with a yard and process their timber into logs for a 50/50 split (pardon the pun). Budget Β£1.5k for a decent hydraulic splitter. Do it by hand if you’re mental.
