The earth track does corrode and cause problems but if it were a bad earth you would be getting the classic transit discotheque lights symptom as the voltage tries to earth through the other bulbs. Check the bulbs, then the fuse, then the switch.

Don't dismiss MIG over MMA for that reason. I have a single phase MIG that will take 1.5mm wire and competently weld 10mm in a single pass. If you have to re do the weld every 2 months you didn't do it right in the first place
