  1. Fitting one for an arb site today. Wordle 1,020 3/6 ⬜⬜⬜🟨⬜ ⬜🟨⬜⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
  2. Here's a bit of a derail but still within the bounds of the thread I think. So I went to a water powered forge mill at the weekend. They used to make farming and other metal tools, including bill hooks and I think axes. Fascinating to see how such things were made. The wheels were actually running and some of the machines and tools. Plus an awful lot of heavy, rusty, wrought iron lying around the place. https://churchillforge.org.uk/
  3. Is there any money involved with signing up? If not then I'll probably do it just to keep seeing the stats. The streak and average guess is very compelling! It's bloody annoying, having to sign in to everything now, but it's just one more on top of the hundreds that you already do.
  4. Yeah, but how does that directly influence ground level air quality? There's going to be far more diesel combustion, brake and tyre rubber/plastic particles on any street. Not that I'm advocating all the excessive air travel btw.
  5. Sure, some of that as well. There were a few upsides. I'm willing to stand corrected, but I don't think air travel emissions have that much of an impact on ground level air quality.
  6. The fact that air quality improved a lot during lockdowns must prove something. I'm sure people didn't reduce the amount of wood they were burning, whereas we know there was an awful lot less traffic on the roads.

  8. True but how often do they differentiate in the various air quality assessments that get done? I still can't believe that wood burners are the worst offenders for causing particulate pollution, as a few studies have claimed recently.
  9. The trouble with that sentiment is that the average youth today would rather stand around like a wetwipe in a nice warm shopping centre or supermarket to earn the minimum wage.
  10. I don't think it entirely covers the environmental aspects. Fuel efficiency, and exhaust emissions, aren't the whole story. There's other stuff to consider like the amount of brake dust and tyre particles emitted - they've both increased in recent years with the fashion for SUVs and other overly big and overweight cars. That's the case for ICE and EV. Domestic wood burning is probably the scapegoat for particulates coming from our roads. I'd rather the latter was targeted instead of trying to ban wood burners.
  11. Exactly. I was just about to suggest that we need a much more nuanced road tax calculation that takes into account mileage, vehicle size/weight as well as emissions. That would address the issue of all the obese SUVS and Chelsea Tractors blocking up the roads and unnecessarily hastening their demise. Tosslers and other EVs being some of the worst offenders.
  12. And a bottle of Rennie for breakfast.
  13. Not Facebook, I don't do it, but I've just cringed at this.
  14. I don't think old Putin has much regard for environmental matters. Kind of ironic as his motivation is supposedly to "reclaim a beautiful part of Russia". All he'll end up with is a barren, toxic wasteland at this rate. If he succeeeds. Some light bedtime reading - Ukraine conflict environmental briefing: Nature - CEOBS CEOBS.ORG Joint briefing exploring how the conflict is affecting Ukraine's ecosystems and biodiversity, and its nature governance.
  15. I'd go for Pyracantha. I think that's even worse than Berberis.

    Whinjuries

I had a similarly exciting experience with wiring once. Though I was sober. (Not sure if that works in my defense or not). The only thing that I know for sure now about wiring is to assume nothing! I was cutting what I thought was an already disconnected wire. Edit. And remember to use one of those electrical tester screwdrivers before touching anything.
  18. Anyone used this bird call ID app? I was recommended it and installed it yesterday. It seems excellent. It's picked up a whole load of birds, a lot of which I didn't know we had around the garden. I set it recording this morning as I was hanging the washing out and it recognised 10 different species in 6 minutes. Whinjuries

Interesting idea for a thread, and nice looking house Peds. I'm not even going to attempt to compete with Will C's offering, I think we may have peaked already with that one. I've a couple that were slightly more than whinjuries, but might fit the bill. Back at school, age about 12 maybe, we were playing cricket in PE. I was wicket keeper and enjoying the chance to stand around most of the time. Next thing i know there's a sharp sting and there's a bit of willow in my face. I reckon the batter swung round too much, he said I was stood too close, who knows. I earnt 7 stitches in A&E for that, 1/2 inch below my left eye. All healing nicely so I went in for a Judo competition the following week. As does happen sometimes I got thrown to the mat, normally all part of the fun but I landed smack bang on the wound. Back to A&E for another lot of stitches, thus ensuring a life long scar. Fast forward a good few years. All grown up and supposedly wiser. I went out scrumping plums. After an excellent picking I was happily cycling home feeling very pleased with my haul. Handlebars loaded with heavy carrier bags full of plums to the point of challenging but manageable. So I thought. A narrow section of path edged by metal railings proved otherwise. Straight off over the handlebars with the heavy bags cramping the chance to style it out! Off to A&E again but luckily only a sprained wrist that time.
  21. Not yet but my brother told me that has happened to him recently, and he's been doing it longer than me. I guess it's just a question of time.

  23. Yeah I think most do. There were a few exposΓ©s at the start of this thread. I generally start with one of a select few favourites. Anything with lots of vowels is good I reckon.
