I'd ask your friend if she really wants it levelled. It doesn't need to be and level changes in a garden are generally good, they add interest planting opportunities.It'd be a lot of work to level that for not much gain in my opinion. If you've got to do it by hand then a stump grinder followed by a mattock, a long handled shovel and a big landscaping rake will be the way forward. Plus a generous lunchbox and flask/bottle of drink!

Spring returned today. It wasn't especially sunny but it was pleasantly warm and most importantly, no rain. There's a 1 in 4 chance it'll make another appearance tomorrow I reckon.

It's hard to be sure from those photos but some of it could be Lime, Chestnut or Sycamore maybe. No Conifers that I can see, of which the three on your unsafe list are types.

Yes, the barn is clad in tin all over. They'd like to get rid and replace it with something nicer, but probably not keen enough for me to hasten the process!

Is that assessment based on the fact that it has Die Back, so that much weaker, or a general feeling on long laterals like that? I'd be pretty confident in it being doable if it were a normal healthy tree, I quite like a challenge. It didn't look that bad from the ground. I'm going to use a MEWP now anyway, but just trying to gather knowledge on the implications of Chalara for my own future reference really. Last year, fully dressed in it's leaves, that tree didn't look too bad at all, you could barely see anything amiss with it.

Nice one cheers all. So a clear consensus is forming, it's a MEWP job. My mates are happy to hire one in and there's a large area of flat concrete to the right of the tree, around the barn, so access should be good.
