You're right, that's not pleasant. No worse than the crap in most processed food though. What's your means of private H2O supply; well, spring, borehole? It is tempting to be self-sufficient in water but it's not always practical and even underground sources are going to dry up at this rate anyway. What would make sense would be for households to be self-sufficient in non-drinking water. It's a pointless waste to all be using expensive treated water to water the garden, wash the car or flush straight down the toilet. That could all be done with harvested rainwater or minimally home treated "grey water". I believe this is a lot more common in Germany for instance.

Where there's muck there's money! They're meant to treat it, but sometimes just dump it out as is instead.

An An argument for the nationalisation of water surely, as it's an essential service / critical infrastructure. (Plus the other essential services for.that matter. We probably wouldn't be in quite such a mess with energy prices if it was under state control. But that's a whole other can of worms). Surely the Gov. could and should penalise the water companies for wastage, and limit their fat incomes. But they don't. As we're seeing, they don't like standing in the way of huge profits for big business. We actually save money by being on a meter, that's why we requested to go on to one. It certainly makes you very aware and careful with what you use.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. It's nice to see a good moon but a bit annoying if you're trying to see anything else. I managed to hide it behind my lads climbing frame / wall last night.

Completely agree. It's crazy that people can use or abuse as much water as they like. The water companies should themselves be on meters as well, so as to be more accountable for their leaks and losses.

Did anyone see any last night? (Not the Vic and Bob version!). I saw 5, even from a garden towards the edge of a big city, so a pretty good show. It would have been much better in a rural environment, without all the ambient light around. Anyway.........time for some news. Its not really news to be fair, given the current state of affairs, but it's certainly more befitting of this thread than the perpetual tax whine and rant. UK Heatwave: Official drought declared across large parts of England WWW.BBC.CO.UK More people could face hosepipe bans, with five companies already announcing restrictions on water use. My neighbour who inexplicably enjoys jet washing his already spotless car, drive and decking almost every weekend is going to have to curtail his fun for the next few months. That's one thing, people can live with grubby cars, but the inevitable further rise in food prices is going be more problematic. Gonna be expensive to farm anything with no fuel and no water.

I don't think you can buy Class. Amazon weren't selling it the last time I checked! Even if you earn over £60k and have enough money to have 3 exotic holidays, 4 brand new cars, 6 children in private school, a country mansion with an indoor and outdoor pool, etc etc; it doesn't make you upper class, or even middle class for that matter. (It could also be argued that all that wasteful extravagance won't even make you a happier or nicer person). Though I could be confusing class with cultural capital.

The sad fact is that most people are more or less completely detached from the natural environment these days. Apart from people on here, and others who work in similar sectors, how many of the general population could actually identify an Ash tree, (or Oak, Beech, Willow etc)?

I had the same inspiration after reading the Lars Mytting book. I was dubious about the top down method until I actually tried it myself. It really does work surprisingly well. Must admit that after a while I reverted to normally using the conventional down top method though, as never had a problem with lighting our stove, and no excessive smoke. It's not as fun though! Agree with a previous point, there's no excuse for firelighters; nowt wrong with newspaper or card and a few sticks of nice dry kindling, (old floorboards are perfect). It's always good to reduce smoke, pollution anyway. -

Good point, me neither. I didn't notice the grotty blue plastic first time around. Not really in keeping is it? Apparently it's made entirely from their own oak, largely steam bent. So I guess that includes the lathes. Apparently "The joints were made from recycled aluminum signage from across the site." Maybe they were concerned about steel staining the oak.

Do you need to get them out for some reason? If not then you could just leave them there as they won't regrow, being conifer, and will rot down relatively quickly. The stumps are dulling the chain rapidly because of the soil and small particles of sand that are embedded the bark. If you're determined to remove them by hand then a sharp Mattock is the best tool by far. Plus a hell of a lot of time, sweat and exertion!

This is nice, in aesthetic and concept. Exactly. That's it, we could end this discussion right there with that summation! As an addendum. We are all, to a greater or lesser extent, complicit in the transfer of wealth to the huge multinational corporate beasts like Amazon, BP, Monsanto, Apple etc, (and their attendant parasites such as law and banking companies). We don't have to drive the mile in our SUV to the supermarket or school, keep our houses warm enough to wear shorts all year round, eat meat every day, buy the latest iPhone every year, have the biggest TV, have that bit of plastic tat delivered from China in 15 minutes.............blah blah blah. The list is endless. All those needless purchases just mean less money for us and more for them. It all comes down to overconsumption, I think anyway. No point fretting about the state of affairs unless we're willing to change our own habits.

It's a bleak outlook for us all, that's for sure. As always, Climate Change and destruction of the natural world dwarf all other current concerns. The thing is, it doesn't matter how much wealth those in the upper echelons, the Oligarchy, possess; it'll be of no use when the world is burning and/or flooding to death around them. They live physically on the same planet as the rest of us lowly beasts. The irony is that the majority of the wealth that they're amassing is derived from human activities that are causing the aforementioned catastrophe. The stupidity of man.

That all sounds idilic. The outdoor education aspect is so important for children, sadly massively undervalued in this country. The reduction of exam stress must be almost as important as well. I'm curious; what's the Swedish immigration policy like? You'd have thought it would be pretty tough, with life so good there. Something like the Aussie system, or the UKs these days for that matter. The house price differential is just crazy!
