No, I think you should persevere, and post the results up on the cooking thread. That winter stew sounds good. It was a few years ago now, but I don't remember them tasting too gamey at all. The old cliché - just tasted like chicken, but a bit more interesting.

By all means. Forays should always be accommodated. A mate of mine made a Squirrel terrine once. That was pretty good. I caught and skinned them, but didn't have the patience for the somewhat tedious butchery, so he did that bit. I've an idea we needed 7 animals for it, as there's not much meat on them obviously, other than the back legs. I'd love it to be on sale in more butchers and even supermarkets. Even just as Squirrel Nuggets if the manual butchery is too big an ask.

I wish. Plenty too many of the little shits round here still. Maybe someone should investigate Squirrel liver salad, or paté.
  14. No credit here I'm abashed to to say. Gressingham duck, so about as unwild as it gets! The only butchery required was opening the packet and then dicing it up. I'm with you on Gizzards. Salade de gésiers is a cracking dish.

Interesting. That theory does ring a bell. I believe predated animal species employ similar tactics. But the mast years for trees are triggered by hot dry summers right? Not sure that I could ever intersperse a reply into the original text.

What's the normal Mast Year talk - that it predicts a harsh winter? Probably bollox if so, I agree. More likely that a mast year is just a reflection of a harsh summer, i.e. too hot and dry. Trees feel threatened so go all out to produce the next generation. Can't blame them, what would we want on our death beds, other than a last cigarette?
  23. @Iain Hickinbottom Also in the context future safety. I'd be wary of advertising your mobile number on a public forum like this. You never know who's looking, and there's ways of tracing numbers to addresses in some cases I think. Better to just get people to PM you instead. Best of luck with the recovery.
