  1. +1 . From a very reliable Stihl source the clutch drums were the problem all along (a problem with the metallurgy) now resolved.
  2. If you believe everything you read on Wikipedia you would eat everything you see. Wikipedia is full of unsubstantiated crap.
  3. Interestingly Oregon has never offered a Power Mate alternative for this saw in any of its guises . Do they make this drum for Stihl ?
  4. Would it not have been better (if Stihl actually do know the cause) to have simply done a recall (it has been done often enough before for safety reasons) and replaced all drums and bearings with freshly manufactured ones tested to be true (again assuming that this is the prime reason). Anyone unfortunate to have bought a saw with this problem is very unlikely to buy another and loss of confidence in a manufacturer would lead to greater financial penalties than the relatively cheap option of dumping a load of iffy clutch drums. Spud is right ignoring customer complaints with disdain doesn't win you any friends
  5. And of course much to Stihl's shame they have never come clean about this issue, reducing what should be an excellent all round 50cc saw to a lottery, it might be ok but might as easily not .
  6. I assume the ms241 shares this clutch drum etc. with the 261 but there doesn't seem to be any reported problems with it or am I wrong (on both counts) ?
  7. Very surprised that this clutch drum problem would show up on the new model after all the ongoing publicity for this fault. The needle bearing itself is common to many other stihls none of whom seem to have this trouble. One of the original theories was that the drums were not perfectly round in some cases causing the early failure of the bearing (your saw sounds suspiciously like this) . It seems rediculous that you have had to resort to a technically inferior drum to resolve this issue.
  8. Thanks for all replies, just thinking about getting a new one.
  9. Thanks, none of these were the new clutch cover versions ?

    MS261 v2

Curious to know if anyone has had problems (or has seen reports of problems) with the clutch needle bearing/crankshaft wear on the latest (v2) version of the MS261CM ? This problem seems to plagued previous versions of this saw (I do know it didn't affect all saws) but I've not found any reports for the newest version.
  11. Not all of them , my 2015 261 has been completely trouble free.
  12. +1 Seriously , and I thought us Scots were supposed to be tight !
  13. I'm curious about the wear on the drive splines and shaft. I assume you were using a rim sprocket ?
  14. I have just ordered from garden spares I don't have any problems with bearings or crankshaft ( my saw is 2015) but just want to take precautionary measures just in case. Thanks for all replies.
  15. Unfortunately my local (40 miles away) bearing factors only seem to cater for the car and agriculture side.
  16. Many thanks I'll give that a go.
  17. Thanks for reply Mark. I have been looking for metal cage bearings as well but all the sellers at the moment seem to be selling plastic ones. I would appreciate a heads up from anyone finding metal caged bearings.
  18. "Ive just been fitting the ms260 drums and have had no return issues as of yet" I asked about the interchangeability of 260/261 drums a few weeks ago but unfortunately got no reply ( they seemed identical to me ) . Do you use Stihl drums or the Oregon equivalent ?
  19. I have a spare cap (had a 50 for several years) but I'm pretty sure it's a fuel one .The outside diameter of the top is 36.5mm and I've a feeling the oil one is slightly smaller. Your welcome to it if it's of any use.
  20. Isn't that the latest 550xp New Edition ?
  21. So what is the test actually saying here ---- a Stihl with a dodgy clutch drum still comes out on top of a 550xp.
  22. As in all these saw threads, regardless of the site, it is always the relatively few unlucky owners who have had problems with a particular saw that shout the loudest .Folk who have had the same saw with no problems tend not to bother posting in general. I tend to ignore the most vociferous complainers as they inevitably skew the true picture of a saws competence .
  23. Someone locally selling a running 242 (no xp on decal) for £120 ono. Is it worth it? ( I don't really need it but ! )
