  1. Actually I have Stihl (260 +261), Husqvarna (372) and Dolmar (420) all excellent saws in their own right. I have tried the 550xp and didn't particularly like it, it doesn't feel any lighter in the hand than the 261 ( the slightly more streamlined form of the 550 give the impression that it should actually weigh less than it does). What does or doesn't feel right about a saw is always down to the individual and any recommendations should only be taken as a guidance until you've tried the saw yourself. I (probably like most others on this site) just use my saws ,I don't worry about them weighing a few ounce more or less than another brand.

Not sure what that guard's going to stop !!!!
  3. Totally agree. I have had exactly the same experience. It is only useful to post comments about saws if you have taken the time to try them out properly not handled them for five minutes at a dealers. (almost a rant )
  4. Is this still a current problem even on 2015 saws ? I would have thought manufacture quality control should have sorted this out since 2012.
  5. I'm assuming that Stihl clutch drums are still being made by Oregon for Stihl and that the appropriate sized Oregon bearing will fit ? Although I see that Oregon needle bearings also appear to have plastic cages which would seem obvious if they are making them for Stihl as well.
  6. But surely if this was a known problem with earlier saws it would have been rectified before now ?
  7. Is there a metal caged bearing that fits this clutch drum ? My saw is a 2015 model.
  8. I don't quite understand why there seems to be an ongoing problem with the clutch bearing on this saw as this part is common to at least a dozen other Stihl saws. Have they just changed to a plastic cage recently and is this type of fault likely to show up in other saws as their bearings are replaced ? Is there something inherent in the design of the MS261 that causes this ? I have both the 260 and the 261cm although the 260 runs an Oregon sprocket and as far as I can see unfortunately there is no Oregon sprocket for the 261. PS Has anyone tried aftermarket replacement bearings ?
  9. By far the best ( and probably most expensive ) cleaner for bar and plastic parts I've used is Stihl Special Cleaner. £7-£8 for 500ml but it's safe and it really works. If your not cutting spruce etc all the time it's probably worth it.
  10. Life in general is complicated, why should this be any different ?
  11. I have bought a spare loop of 95VPX and may well just stick with that. I haven't yet used this saw in anger so time will tell.
  12. Many thanks for reply. Unfortunately that would rather defeat the reason for running narrow kerf (less power demands on saw ). It's not a deal breaker I can live with semi chisel but full would be nice.
  13. Does anyone make a full chisel chain in narrow kerf in .325 x 1.3 ? Stihl's PS is only available in 3/8. I run Stihl RS on all my other saws ( the Dolmar was bought for the garden ) and would prefer full chisel on the narrow bar as well if possible. Perhaps my only option is to change the bar and rim to 3/8 ?
  14. The PS420 as it should be (with the help of Shavey's excellent services).
  15. Excellent work Sawtroll and Shavey
  16. Many thanks for replies. Shavey -- My 420 has 1.3 x .325 chain ( its a direct import from Germany ) can you source sprockets to fit ?
  17. Is there a rim sprocket available for this saw. Can't find anything on Oregon's site in the Power Mate range. Is there another saw with the same specs of the PS420 whose sprocket fits ?
  18. It appears to be a 3/8 .05 narrow kerf low profile semi-chisel safety chain produced for the far eastern markets. This designation not being available in the UK but any similar 3/8 .05 should fit (safety if that's what he's used to).
  19. Unfortunately the 235e has a non adjustable oil pump and you are pretty much stuck with what you have. I suggest you don't leave it idling too long between cuts as it will continue to pump oil even though the chain isn't moving.
  20. If you MUST clean your saws I can highly recommend Stihl's Special Cleaner (0000 881 9400), it's half the price of their resin solvent and equally effective. It really does get the job done and 500ml lasts a very long time . It's equally effective a getting gunge of bars etc and doesn't affect the paintwork.I highly recommend it.
  21. Ebay doesn't give a s**t , you can report them until you are blue in the face the chances of them being pulled are negligible as I've found out. I have no sympathy for anyone who buys one (assuming there are pictures). If you can't be bothered to do the minimum of checking on the Husqvarna or Stihl websites (assuming you are unfamiliar with what the saw should look like) then it's entirely your own fault and you shouldn't be on ebay in the first place. Remember if it looks too good to be true it usually is , nobody can be that gullible, even the most cursory of inspections show it to be a fake. ( When I say "you" I am in no way implying that anyone on this site would be taken in.)
  22. The main reason I was asking about the Husqvarnas was because although I have a couple of Husqvarna main agents locally neither of them stock their boots and when asked why not they were both pretty evasive with their answers. ( the good deal I was offered was over the phone )
