  1. Even on takedowns I rarely use spikes until the final stem, much easier climbong without them. Srt or footlockign is a better way to enter the tree as it requires less openign and closing of biners. Srt is more efficient than footlocking. The gear doesn't need to go on the harness when not in use it can stay on the access line out of the way. Its the way forward for larger trees but not worth it for back garden jobs really, dependign on the back garden of course!!
  2. Hardly ever right except for when it matters !!
  3. I seem to remember advising that a few years ago!!
  4. Actually its Mcrath, unless it was bremner doing an impression of mcgrath??
  5. Its part of a huge park which is not open to the public. (some bits are but not the showground area) let the trees be and see if they survive or not. I would have laughed though if some of the pine fell on a vehicle at the aa show!!
  6. They are not subbies though and they don't need insurance, sure they need enough to cover holidays but not sick pay as we don't do sick!
  7. Rory Mcgraff not Rory Bremner!!
  8. That reg coates device does look good. WHo's stein? I reckon it would be good if you wrapped the rope round both bollards at once, nice big area. I wonder if that has been tried?
  9. I've only used the lowerign device on the ground a few times, I think I got the hang of it ok, rocket science it is not!
  10. My groundie is great at lettign it run! He says he lays the rope over his hands but doesn't hold it. He then wattches the rope instead of starign at what I and the log are doing. Seems to work ok. It runs and he has to stop it, rather then stopping it then lettign it run wich is what seems to be the problem in most cases. Also what device are you using? The bigger the better IMO.
  11. Is there a "filling in endless paperwork" event as well?
  12. As long as there is no evidence of transaction/agreement then no worries. A bit like cash then. But if your living tax free cos your doing jobs for the landlord then that will be seen as taxable but only if your investigated. I'm sure many poeple are gettign away with it and good luck to them. I hate the exchange of money if it can be avoided.
  13. LETS is taxable. Suexual favours are taxable if you 50 quids worth of sexual favour for 50 quids worth of tree work then thats taxable!! If the sexual favour is free and the tree work is free then no worries but if one is done because of the other then its taxable, We could all invent our own currency. Lets call tham arbs. I'll do 100 arbs for you in return for 100 arbs. That would be taxable at the current rate and whatever an arb is worth would be the gross taxable amount.
  14. All those things are taxable!! (maybe apart from the wifes bush) Don't keep any evidence of such agreements. 500 quid job for 500 quid favour in return is income of 500 quid! I knwo its harsh and your unlikely to get done but just as long as you know.....
  15. No, thats when you've been in the pub too long!!
  16. Correct. Effectively it is not possible, it can be done with two throwlines and stuff but not worth the tangle. Give it up and step away from the idea! Just throwline, footlock/srt and install RG when you get there.
  17. Turning it off every now and then seems to help too. Mine won't just continue working, it gets worse over a few days then I turn it off for half and (computer and router) and let it power up and reconect itself in its own time, seems ot work ok.
  18. SWB says it so much more simplerer and to the point than me!!
  19. Do you need wireless for a laptop or something or is it just convenient to have the router in a different place to the computer? I run the router signal through the earth system of the house then pick it up in the office. I've not bodged this, its a gadget you can get from pc world that does it, it works really well. Like a wired in system without the wires. The basic set comes with two mains sockets one for internet in and one for out. For extra terminals around the house you would need addidtional "out" sockets although they are both the same! And of course the wireless signal would still continue to be usable in the areas where it was workign ok before. Just a thought!
  20. I agree! Better off not knowign IMO !! But, if you translated those times in to fuel usage you could better judge how long you can use a saw? i.e. if 44minutes is the allowed time at full throttle, then clamp the saw down and run it at full throttle for 44mins and see how much fuel it uses. Stop the stopwatch to re fule as required. My guess is quite a lot of fuel! Maybe 4-5 tanks worth. So even if we have the saw on tick over quite a lot whic means we are usign it less then, 4-5 tanks is quite a bit of sawing, and to allow for the wastage durign tickover then maybe we could use 7-8 tanks of fuel. Now that is quite bit. I'm not sayign we should all do this as there is no way I'm running my 66 on full power to see what fuel I can waste, sorry use! Maybe someone workign for the LA could do the experiment??
  21. I guess you should have a recylable certificate license for carrying empty printer ink cartridges!
  22. Make you you don't have any typex unless you have a cossh sheet for it!!
  23. You don't sub contract yourself and the people you employ are not sub contractors!
  24. Cool. Its not like you are in my area so I have no worries, but times are hard for us all. Glad you took it ok. I've always beleived that if you excell (not good at) you will be in demand and do well.
  25. MAybe if you and your mates are cheap enough you could put another firm out of business and cause more unemployment. Sorry, nothing personal meant by that, bit of a rant, but it is possible your boss laid you off cos there are too many "mates" doing cheap work and not enough work to go round as it is. Of course the market dictates what happens and how much clients will pay and these days everyone wants a bargain. Good luck in your venture, don't take my first comment to heart.
