  1. Hi. It won't work if you go straight to wmv though for some reason. So publish as AVI, then make a new film using that avi only and publish that at wmv. or what movie maker calls best quality available.

Save changing it all to mp4 anyway, and if you think the quality is ok then it must just be me knockin gmy own stuff!

Your video is a much better example to newbies by the way!!

  2. But your editing from MP4 on windows movie maker?? That won't work with mine!
  3. Erm, mostly its just using up the spare rope. They are quite long. But, it can also be so that if the rigging point should break it might hold further down, which is useful if you want a secondary rig point way out on a limb. Tie it off and bring the rope back along the limb with half hitches.
  4. I know a guy who set up ages ago, stopped now though. He couldn't climb to save his life, no tickets etc but had watched a few climbers, me and a few others and helped us out here and there. He was a woodcutter so good with a saw but that was all. Anyway, some lady asked him to take a broken branch out of top of cedar. Massive tree. He ummed and arrd and said it would be really difficult to get up there! £400 quid! Yes please she says! It took him all day to branch roll up this tree and get the one limb down which smashed the garden to bits! She paid him £450 cos of the immense effort and bravery! And then she paid a gardiner to clear up and put the lawn right etc. I know the tree. Throwline/footlock/ lowering line/capstan/ 2men 2hrs tops including a cuppa, no damage and all removed £250... she would have gone mental at £250 for 2 hrs work!!! But if she had known it was worth gettign another quote she would have done. So what I mean is....people still think this is a really dangerous job for unhinged folk who don't care about HSE. ANd they will pay cos they don't know there is an alternative. Everything we do to be proffessional is actually making the job look less expensive not more! Its only the few customers that have the nouse to get someone trustworthy in, and that "nouse" is usually learned from past experience.
  5. I hope no one weed on it the last time it was frozen!
  6. You'd be surprised! In my experience some customers expect crappy/scruffy expensive tree work! If the company is doing with no PPE, they think its really dangerous and pay through the nose for it! I (we all) make it all look safe and (relatively) easy and they wonder why we charge so much!!
  7. Bit of a scratch or smudge on the lens. If thats all thats wrong then no worries, I have cleaned it off now. I think I got smoked salmon on it at lunch time!
  8. Yes. Timba!! He keeps well out of the way, usually in the truck or car. But he knows when I'm on final ascent, even with chipper running and if he can't see me! Imn secure places I leave the car door open and he comes running out everytime.
  9. Hi Paul. Any body working on the job, on the books or not, should be covered by EL insurance no? Hence all "subbies" (hate that word) that are in for the day should be covered by the main contractors EL insurance?
  10. Actually its not that difficult to sort out ouselves. I just made a spreadsheet with all my saws, bars and chain types on. Then looked each one up on your site and pasted the part number for each chain and the price onto my spreadsheet. I can take that list to work and put it up on the wall!! Simples. I can see that one of each of the chains I use (ten in total) would come to £176.00+ vat! Thats pretty good, as it includes 2 for the 880! Then I can replace any of them as required. Any changes to the cost can be updated on the spreadsheet easy enough.
  11. So how does that video compare in qulaity to other X170 films posted on here?? Anybody think its worserer or is it just me?
  12. I've finally cobboled some video. Not very good though, still learning!! Again I had battery problems, so there is the initial set up, a couple of test branches to test the dropezone, then loads missed out. Then I missed all of the removal of the big limb, and then got new batteries and got the removal of the rest of the top but thats all!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYIUelLOIhc]YouTube - Corsican rigging.wmv[/ame]
  13. I did 15 in 15 days a couple of years ago. Got 600 each. Crane would have been nice, but nowhere to put it all, and I would have had to hire loads more kit to process the stuff quick enough so would have ended up with less dosh but in quicker time. That rig is awsome Reg. Its got me thinking!!!!
  14. I tried converting some video to mp4 then (thanks for the software link) but windows movie maker didn't like it in mp4 format? So I did it all as avi again, published as avi, then converted that to something better wmv. I think. I'll put the video up in my cosrsican pine thread later. I still think the quality is lacking, and your film here and steves one seem better quality?
  15. ANd then it come back out of there tax from then on? So you pay (from my first example) 400 less 100 tax but don't give that tax to the IR cos you have laready paid out?? Is that it? It still sucks! You'd be inclined to sack them and get someone else. They would have only just started when yuou find out you owe them this money, so you could let them go. "sorry mate, its not working out, bye" Next?
  16. Very nice!! The kit bag moves up and down the main anchor sling and holds all your spider legs! Neat!!
  17. So the employer has to actually pay more than the weekly wage? I thought it would just be no tax deducted until its balanced?? Surely the employer can give it in small doses to the employee? So lets say wages are 400 and the tax thing says give him another 400. Employer gives him 450 for 8 weeks and tells him to like it or get another job?? Surely you can't be made to pay a new employee the rebate in full at the start of employment? You would just choose a different employee and those who are due a rebate would find it harder to get work!! No?
  18. It should all work out ok though. The tax code system does work. I can't remember how rebates work exactly and I think it depends on the amount, so large amounts are paid directly from IR to the employee, but smaller amounts are effectivley re claimed by less tax being taken on future pay. So a person employed for 4 months pays tax is if its going to be like that all year. His employer pays 400 per week less tax person, takes home 300 (this is just example figures) and IR get 100. After 4 months person is laid off and has no more work until late in the tax year with a new employer. At this point he is owed say 400 back again! So his pay is now 400per week less no tax until its all balanced again. So the new employer is not paying any more overall. Still the weekly wage, but the employee is gettign his rebate in the form of less tax being taken.
  19. Oh, I thought so. I might try that! I find movie maker will take it unconverted and the editing works just fine. But when its published it comes out with half the screen green. So I publish it as AVI. Then re load the published version and publish it again at full quality and the green line doesn't appear. I'm sure I'm losing something along the way!
  20. I bought a chain last week from my local, not quite the cheapest around but good, supplier!! I need a new place! Easy clicks on the computer after work hours would do it for me! I have 9 different saws/bar lengths and would love to one day have a full stock at any time. So if I logged on and it just had my chains 1 -9. I would click what I want. Simples. I considered buying by the length but I'm convinced I would change chains sooner than necessary and cancel out any savings.
  21. Thank you. Do you convert all your footage and then edit it. Or edit it and then convert the final product to Mp4. I think the second is what I'm doing with movie maker.
  22. Justin......Just a thought.... Would it be possible on your site to enter the saws and bar lengths that you have, so each time you go to the site you have a list of just the right chains. Click the ones you want and hit order and they just arrive in the post? A bit like tesco knowing what your favourite purchase are? I guess it would be more expense and maybe not worth it.
  23. Generally a semi chisel will tolerate not being fully sharp better than a full chisel. It also needs less power to run it. So semi is better for felling or cutting stumps etc and if your running a large bar on your saw. Full chisel for cross cutting and in the tree use is a better chain. e.g. I have chisel chain on my 25inch 066 bar, but a 30 or 36 inch bar will struggle with full chisel so I have semi chisel to go on that size bar. Thats how I understand it anyway.
  24. So how are you editing the footage? Did you say you convert to mp4 first and then edit it? I've have been editing as it is and then I have to publish in one format then re publish it in mp4. Otherwise I get a green band accross the screen. I think your footage is clearer than mine, so maybe your way is best. What the secret??
  25. I think most myths and sayings were born of necessity! "Playing with fire makes you wet the bed" Now, thats a great one to stop boys playing with fire!!
