  1. Sometimes use it. In this instance its a VT without braids, just 8 wraps round the rope and hope for the best!! Works ok but bites too hard, thats why I was confident in this application for descent. I have just put a propert VT on my other rope for a change. Helical is still a favorite though, but it doesn't work with the hitch climber.
  2. HAve you worked for him? I've done a bit here and there.
  3. That hitch would hold on that rope. I can't speak for every other combo. I certainly wouldn't come down on the hitch only as it would be very on/off and not a smooth descent at all, but with the 8 its fine. Other than letting go of the rope below the 8, I can't see any way of it failing, and lettign go is not enough to cause any problems. I tested it before disconnecting my strop/lanyard.
  4. It goes to show that these "services" are not actually services at all. The point of them is not to re unite owners with their keys, its to get money from a million or so poeple every year and thats all. They don't give a stuff if anyone gets there keys back or not. They'll give you a tenner if you do as they ask but its not a reward as such. As long as poeple "fear" (or desire) something there will be a company there to collect money for it. Actually providing a service for honest reward is something that is nearly out of date.
  5. Yep, like what John said, there is a fig 8 under the hitch, between them they share the work, and the hitch is the back up.
  6. Nothing would happen if you pulled it on the way down cos your weight is still on the other end of it.
  7. Yes, thats set so it can be retrieved. the splice end is down at at ground level, pull on it and the alpine butterfly comes down.
  8. Last thursdays job, dimantle beech tree, chip on site and stack wood on site, so we basically just had to get it down and chipped. Also had to shorten a branch on a neighbourign tree, so I removed spikes and nipped over to do that but did get much footage, then down for lunch and back up to finish the take down tree. We felled the final trunk, but missed that too!! Still getting to grips with video. I had it set sideways on at first so had to rotate the picture which reduced the quality, but that is only for the first minute or so, after that (and a cup of tea) I sorted it out and it improves. 9. Use whatever gear you have within the limitations of that gear, simple! If buying an 8, get the winged (eared) one. If you already have a normal one, use it for things that its ok with like backing up a descent. Its no big deal waht you use as long as it works in the situation you are using it in. An eared 8 "could" be better in some situations including rescue, that does not mean that all 8's "should" have ears, especially if they are not used in a rescue. My winged one, aluminium, has been used for rigging so it would be worse for me to use that for descent than my old trusty "deaf" 8, which works fine on 13mm rope.
  10. So you can arbtalk and let us all know you are in chamonix, but you can't ask someone there where you can get head cam spares!!!!!
  11. Ok, no worries, I thought maybe my first comment got you wound up!! No need, that was just the sarcasm out of the way, the rest was genuine, I liked it! I'd put something together like that myself if I can get some good footage.
  12. Thought not, but it moves from one scenario straight to another so it looked like it could be the same tree. I neither approved or dissaproved of the music, I just gave my opinion. No need for the finger!!
  13. Thats no fair! "No sack" cannot be compared be to anything actually aimed at inteligent life forms!
  14. I really like it!! While your practicing editing, I'm still practicing sarcasm! Good video, nice editing. The music is more dramatic than the work but to a customer the work will be the dramatic part and the music will sound fine I'm sure. Good stuff all round. One work question. Is the skylining bit the same tree as the hollow is in?
  15. I'm waiting for the "skilled Arborist doing exciting tree work" bit to come along...........
  16. I think the wife must have said get pros in and the husband said no lets save a few quid, thats why he's defensive but she's not happy at all!!
  17. And the the aftermath....... Hilarious!!! Only a bit of broken glass........ouch...... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4tZCIXfYG8&feature=related]YouTube - Aftermath of Tree Hitting House[/ame]
  18. Saw this elsewhere but had to post it here!! Watch right till the end!! Some bad language though, keep the volume low, but not too low!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdF9TzP3eKk&feature=related]YouTube - TREE HITS HOUSE!!![/ame]

    My LDV!!

Its ok actually, but we do try and avoid loading it right up and hills. Going out of town in the morning is uphill when its empty, and we nearly always empty somewhere before coming back anyway so I do very little transporting wood chip. I have had some good loads of logs on though!
  20. Small files can be added as an attachment, like a picture, then each person downloads it individually to watch it.

    My LDV!!

That looks very much like waht I envisioned when I saw the ad for that truck on tinternet!! Very good job Andy, nice one Liam. welcome to the Long Delay Vehicle club. Add about 10% extra time for every journey, you'll be fine!!
  22. Thats more of a belay device really, but can be used as a descender but is unprotected. Simpler would be a large figure 8. A winged one if you prefer. Again its not backed up in normal use but can be, and it is more suitable for descending.
  23. In fact you shouldn't be driving a vehicle with a tow bar and NO trailer with a post 97 licence as you have the ability to hitch up a greater than 750kg trailer and therefore would be illegal. Interstlingly, in greece its illegal to have a tow hitch and NO trailer. So all tow hitches are removable. Then when you are towing a trialer it has to licensed and registered as "belonging" to that vehicle. But this is in a country where no one has a license or insurance oustide of the mainland anyway, and no one gives a stuff and they don't have a VOSA or anything!! My sister drives a smart car, never had a single lesson!!
  24. I'm not havign a tantrum, just needed saying thats all! I know you said it yourself, its your mistake, but everyone else going "oh dear" "shame that happend" "hope your ok" "yes ladders can be dangerous" etc etc... what they are all thinking is "idiot". Your stupidity is equally matched with your bravery for posting though! It would have been far funnier if every reply was just a different word for idiot!! There are so many threads on here about working off ladders, and how its an accident waiting to happen, then when it does everyone gets all soft! There was a youtube clip of a guy doing the same thing and everyone had a right laugh at that one. I'm sorry you cut yourself, but the responses on here are just soft in the head!
  25. Is no one going to say it?? What an idiot!! If anyone didn't know that ladders and chainsaws were dangerous then they must have been living on another planet, and certainly don't deserve to get paid for tree work. Suck it up man, and if you want sympathy go to mummy. "proper arb now" my arse! So 99% of folk on here are not proper arbs yet? Yes, we must all try harder!
