  1. Trailer test in my opinion is just a rip off. Guy who is borrowing my horse box for the test is making his 6th attempt today. He is not that bad at using a trailer but has got into bad driving habits which after driving around for 1 hour on the roads are highlighted. Even changed test centres to make it easier for him. Pleased I dont have to take a test.
  2. Firewood man The production of briquettes with a SPM machine is similar to the method used to produce small conventional straw bales whereas the hydraulic piston is like using a log splitter and a bean can to produce a log. Apart from price the main advantage of the hydraulic press system from my point of view is that the briquettes produced due to there shape can be used in gasification plants without any further processing whereas the SPM briquettes need to be cut to length. Sounds trivial but if your using 10,000 tonnes per annum it becomes important.
  3. How about offering to remove the cherry completely and then find some wood turner to pay good money for the fruit wood. Money up front mind you.
  4. Firewoodman In Briquette terms you are comparing a Roll Royce to a Mini or a Swiss made SPM machine compared to a hydraulic ram. We all would like SPM machines but at 4 times the price most end up with either single or dual ram machines as a compromise. At the end of the day the price per kg is not significantly different to justify the more expensive machine.
  5. Pure propaganda If you understand why Microsoft is so easy to install a virus you will also understand why Linux and its derivatives is so difficult. Quote from a top programmer from a leading brand of laptop computers. Needless to say I will never understand but took his advice and bought Mac.
  6. Mac all the way. Gave up on microsoft when it went to Windows 98 and never regretted it.
  7. I think the speed at which softwood burns is related to the density. I have similar offcuts of kiln dried softwood but by converting them into briquettes the density increases to the extent that it burns similar to hardwood without spitting.
  8. Does anybody know what temperature the spores will be destroyed at. Just wondering whether our torrefication process at 230C would be sufficiently high to destroy the spores. If it is then we could sterilize the wood on site and produce an exportable clean fuel product.
  9. Only worth as much as somebody is willing to pay and once you have bought it you still need to know the tricks of the trade to keep it with a high profile.
  10. Why would anyone buy a secondhand domain name when you have no idea of the history of the site. It could have thousands of complaints listed against it and you would never know until you receive no business. Much easier to buy a new clean name for £20 per annum.
  11. Big J I think for the size of your property a stand alone boiler would be to big. Try looking at a Dunsley Yorkshire it will run all your central heating and keep your room warm and because it is very efficient and thermostatic controlled will not use a lot of wood. We installed one last December and have been very pleased with it.
  12. Film crew been down to the farm for 3 days filming with regards to Landshare with Hugh and his crew on River Cottage. Ended up with less than a minute in last years series but they have re edited to about 2 minutes in this years series. Unfortunately cannot go anywhere locally now without being asked questions on Landshare etc because it is repeated sooooo many times.
  13. Website should be reported to trading standards as I have yet to see logs dried to 7% moisture content unless it has been kiln dried.
  14. Just to update We filled in the Expression of Interest for this grant funding for a Torrefication plant based in Lancashire and out of approx 150 projects 23 have gone through to the full application stage, fortunately we are one of them. The grant application is for 450k and will turn Arb waste into a coal substitute. I am now looking for local Arb partners who can commit to the project and have Arb arisings available which can be quantified on an annual basis. At the present moment I am in two minds whether to continue with the full application due to the time and effort required to fill in the form and the recognition that I am unable to carry out the project without the positive support of a community of Tree Surgeons. Given that grants will be scarce under this new government I think it is a great way to get some much needed investment into the Arb industry. What do you all think or am I just wasting my time.
  15. Hope you can mix in some bent and knotty pieces as it gets boring seeing these machines cut through perfect matchsticks.
  16. I normally use a transport company based in Lancs who deliver concrete panels throughout the country they need return loads and have their own cranage so handling plant is easy for them. PM me if you want their number
  17. 18 Stoner I agree the customers are likely to be eco conscious by buying wood in the first place so from a marketing strategy if you can offer an eco friendly alternative to a plastic net even if it is recycled plastic, then the Eco customer will go for the Eco solution providing the price levels are equal.
  18. Most important is head height that the pump will pump up to. Some centrifugal pumps only have a very small head height of less than 10 meters. The other thing is do you want it priming or self priming (just means will the pump start automatically or do you need to bleed the air out of the circuit first). In your situation I would go for a submersible pump as this is self priming but with a floating limit switch so that when the well is empty it automatically cuts out. I have used a lot of pumps for irrigation on the nursery and found Draper pumps to be cheap and reliable. If your away from mains electric than 12v shurflow pumps are excellent.
  19. 18 stoner Its not the issue of using recycled plastic its more as Lyn has highlighted should we really be using any sort of plastic when we cannot guarantee how it is going to be disposed. Unlike organic material which will compost in a matter of weeks most plastics tend to take years
  20. Did think from a reuseable point of view using 2 Tree ties with sawn off broom handle but then the tree ties were worth more than the sticks.
  21. If you had a community of log traders throughout the country a national price could be set. There are plenty of lorries desperate for a return load at the moment so haulage should not be a problem.
  22. Makes no sense to me carting fuel around the world when we are supposed to be saving energy. Are these olive bars just recycled olives as pure olive briquettes normally break up. Most olive bars are blended with waste paper pulp to produce a stronger briquette and would need a Waste Incineration Directive approved appliance to burn them in. Certainly would be illegal to burn them on any domestic stove as there not WID compliant.
  23. The problem with United Utilities is that they have been selling off reservoirs to earn a quick buck. Here is the latest for sale next week. In the national interest they should not be allowed to do it as most of these assets they are selling were originally compulsory purchased by the local authorities. Lot 058 - Pugh - Property Vendors and Auctioneers
  24. Its just a way of dumping the waste product from there olive oil business into the UK market. You can also do the same with cherry pips. Just dry and put through a briquette press.
  25. Should make United Utilities pay for all the leaks at the same rate as domestic customers. The nations black hole of debt would be paid off in a matter of months.
