  1. Just to update We filled in the Expression of Interest for this grant funding for a Torrefication plant based in Lancashire and out of approx 150 projects 23 have gone through to the full application stage, fortunately we are one of them. The grant application is for 450k and will turn Arb waste into a coal substitute. I am now looking for local Arb partners who can commit to the project and have Arb arisings available which can be quantified on an annual basis. At the present moment I am in two minds whether to continue with the full application due to the time and effort required to fill in the form and the recognition that I am unable to carry out the project without the positive support of a community of Tree Surgeons. Given that grants will be scarce under this new government I think it is a great way to get some much needed investment into the Arb industry. What do you all think or am I just wasting my time.
  2. Hope you can mix in some bent and knotty pieces as it gets boring seeing these machines cut through perfect matchsticks.
  3. I normally use a transport company based in Lancs who deliver concrete panels throughout the country they need return loads and have their own cranage so handling plant is easy for them. PM me if you want their number
  4. 18 Stoner I agree the customers are likely to be eco conscious by buying wood in the first place so from a marketing strategy if you can offer an eco friendly alternative to a plastic net even if it is recycled plastic, then the Eco customer will go for the Eco solution providing the price levels are equal.
  5. Most important is head height that the pump will pump up to. Some centrifugal pumps only have a very small head height of less than 10 meters. The other thing is do you want it priming or self priming (just means will the pump start automatically or do you need to bleed the air out of the circuit first). In your situation I would go for a submersible pump as this is self priming but with a floating limit switch so that when the well is empty it automatically cuts out. I have used a lot of pumps for irrigation on the nursery and found Draper pumps to be cheap and reliable. If your away from mains electric than 12v shurflow pumps are excellent.
  6. 18 stoner Its not the issue of using recycled plastic its more as Lyn has highlighted should we really be using any sort of plastic when we cannot guarantee how it is going to be disposed. Unlike organic material which will compost in a matter of weeks most plastics tend to take years
  7. Did think from a reuseable point of view using 2 Tree ties with sawn off broom handle but then the tree ties were worth more than the sticks.
  8. If you had a community of log traders throughout the country a national price could be set. There are plenty of lorries desperate for a return load at the moment so haulage should not be a problem.
  9. Makes no sense to me carting fuel around the world when we are supposed to be saving energy. Are these olive bars just recycled olives as pure olive briquettes normally break up. Most olive bars are blended with waste paper pulp to produce a stronger briquette and would need a Waste Incineration Directive approved appliance to burn them in. Certainly would be illegal to burn them on any domestic stove as there not WID compliant.
  10. The problem with United Utilities is that they have been selling off reservoirs to earn a quick buck. Here is the latest for sale next week. In the national interest they should not be allowed to do it as most of these assets they are selling were originally compulsory purchased by the local authorities. Lot 058 - Pugh - Property Vendors and Auctioneers
  11. Its just a way of dumping the waste product from there olive oil business into the UK market. You can also do the same with cherry pips. Just dry and put through a briquette press.
  12. Should make United Utilities pay for all the leaks at the same rate as domestic customers. The nations black hole of debt would be paid off in a matter of months.
  13. I think I will have to advertise as chunky kindling being 9 1/2 inches long. I could saw in half but I value my fingers.
  14. How long is the kindling it looks very short or is that the camera angle
  15. Horticulture is a good agricultural use on a very small acreage due to its high turnover per square foot. It will also justify the use of woodchip for heating your polytunnel/glasshouse in the winter. Also makes excellent timber drying areas.
  16. I thought of using returnable boxes like the veg box scheme I used to do
  17. Start by applying to the Environment agency for all the relevant exemptions as a guide I registered for numbers 30,25,21,48,15,5,32,4,17,18,13,14. Once you have these under your belt start your woodland operation making sure you take photographic evidence to give a history of the site. After 4 years the council will find it very difficult to argue against the business having been established at which point you can go with all guns blazing for a farm diversification to include your holiday lets. I use a land agent for advice and he is getting very frustrated with council attitudes to rural diversification so the stronger your position prior to approaching the council the better.
  18. Any suggestions for an alternative to plastic kindling nets as it just seems environmentally wrong putting this extra plastic into the community.
  19. Are you losing any water on a journey. Is pto and gearbox full of oil.
  20. Quoting from the handbook it depends which model .440 168 is 25km/h 440 168s with engine limiter is 32km/h and 440 168s without limiter 40km/h if that is any help.
  21. Andy Would be interested in the Fordson Major crawler if it was the 6 cylinder but from the photo I think it might only be 4 cylinder.
  22. You need to ask if the farmer has already got the various Environment Agency exemption licenses if he does not know what your talking about then find another farmer. Not saying I am a typical farmer but the list of exemptions we had to register for just to continue farming was 12 plus 1 complex exemption which has to be renewed annually.
  23. We sell bulk loads of Kindling as well as Briquettes, Wood Pellets, G30 spec Woodchip and logs. We also have Torrefied Briquettes and Torrefied Wood Pellets under development which will be a direct coal substitute. PM me for more info.
  24. You could have had space here on the farm. We have set up a scheme on the farm with Landshare (As seen on TV River Cottage) We now have a community of 14 families growing Veg on our land using our horticulture equipment. I am extending this to a community of tree surgeons (Treeshare) who will be able to use our fuel processing and storage facilities as a base for there operations.
  25. My silage flail may look a bit silly behind a fastrac as it is only 4ft wide but it would do the job.
