  1. Sounds like I need to sell my HGV and use the tractor instead.
  2. I have refused to sell cord to a local guy on the basis that he will sell the cord unseasoned to the local market and then claim he got it from me to undermine my seasoned timber sales. Fortunately I heard him slagging off another cord supplier using them as his excuse for not supplying seasoned logs to a customer.
  3. I have kept out of this argument as it is none of my business. But the original question on the British Farming Forum was whether to go for a National Licence or a Restricted Licence using a hired in driver. The fourth answer received hit the nail on the head saying it only works with yourself in the driving seat rather than a hired driver. This I believe is how Nick runs his operation and good luck to him. For the record my HGV is laid up at the moment with no intention of putting it back on the road in the current economic climate. As for running an Artic with hired in driver been there done that never again.
  4. MB Trac 1000's and above go for silly money in Germany Used Farm Tractors Mercedes mb trac for sale | Agriaffaires
  5. Palax combi no problems to date apart from twisting log cradle on gate post but that was down to operator error and me not checking the pin on the extending log roller. Only niggle I have is with regard safety with blade being left exposed due to guard not fully returning.
  6. I think you need to be careful with the regs for fastracs. This is the best analysis I have seen but I dont know if it is totally up to date. http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/iacs/aiac/transport/conference0308/paper2.pdf
  7. I would not bother with a fastrac just save my pennies and get one of these Used Forestry tractor WF Trac 1100 from Germany for sale | Agriaffaires
  8. Had a contractor in with a fastrac and he went out of sight on my land. Never had the same problems with my MB Trac.
  9. I have a pallet rotator on the forklift but you need to be careful that the pallet is not going to break as you rotate. You can get a support bar if your pallets are liable to break although it did not come as standard with my rotator.
  10. I will have a count up how many I have got but should be able to find you eight.
  11. IBC's are lighter than spud boxes and for small timber you need the fine wire mesh type IBC. If you want to see the fine wire mesh type then your quite welcome to drop in at the farm.
  12. I gave up looking and used IBC's instead. By the time farmers got rid of the spud boxes they where beyond repair and fit only for firewood.
  13. I picked up a Lister lighting tower set (cheap) originally 110v but with 3 phase generator so got local genset company to rewire for use for 3 phase and 240v.
  14. Alex Unfortunately a bit stretched at the moment otherwise I would take it as I have no problem in using coni although it does sound like predator has it sorted already.
  15. I keep trying to justify the price of a kindlet but end up making do abusing make palax log processor. Put me off buying a kindlet at the APF when the dealer quoted £1000 for the extension chute which at most would have cost £50 to fabricate. Without the chute it would become a 2 man operation which I could not justify.
  16. What I do find slightly annoying is the claim in the article that it is there engineers which have produced the gasification products which there selling. Looking at the products they seem to be overpriced Vulcan Gasifiers from America. http://www.vulcangasifier.com/Multi_Purpose_Gasifiers.html
  17. Simple test. Wood pellets in a beaker of water the pellets expand and break up. Do the same with torrefied wood pellets and you still have the pellets a week later.
  18. I would normally come and collect timber then chip on demand from the stockpile. Normally only offer the service within 25 mile radius of Bolton so not a lot of use to you but I am sure there will be others in your area offering a similar facility. As for size I dont have an upper limit as I have a splitting knife on my excavator which will reduce trunks to a manageable size.
  19. So will tapatalk not work when the new app comes out. I like tapatalk and its nice having all the forums I use in one place so why would I want to clutter up my iphone with more apps.
  20. woodland I think you misunderstood its not burning diesel transporting water. Its just a diesel engine can efficiently burn a lot of other fuels instead of diesel. If you have torrefied wood (charcoal) and want to run a combined heat and power generator you basically have two options in running your diesel engine. Either run it as a gasification plant in which case you need either 20% diesel or spark ignition or run it on slurry which is 50% pulverised torrefied wood and 50% water.
  21. I dont think Black Mountain use any of these technologies to produce torrefied wood if they did the machine cost of £20,000 is out by a factor of 10 or in my case 25. I would think the Black Mountain machine is a modified rocket stove but there website is rather vague at the moment.
  22. Different injectors, fuel pump and hardened piston rings. Google coal slurry for detailed description of technology. Powdered torrefied wood being a substitute for coal.
  23. We produce torrified wood as part of our woodchip drying process. Ground to a fine powder it can be mixed with 50% water and used as a diesel substitute. There is a market for torrified wood pellets in the production of speciality steels but the market for torrefied lump wood is very similar to charcoal.
